I love/hate how "why don't we just say eating instead of feeding" is actually a pretty sensible observation. The way I see Malks is that all of them, in some way, see *too much* even if they don't always understand what they see
I reckon it's because it's technically incorrect, even if the term has utility when in mortal or mixed company. You are not feeding yourself, you are feeding your beast. Of course, some consider those one in the same but most of us want to keep that *thing* as far from our minds as possible.
As a storyteller for vtm I love playing as the malks. They give you so much freedom in the horror you can portray. But as a player clan they can be difficult to manage for a storyteller at least in my experience.
As it stated in the Malkva's clan book, you have those who are completely .. normal, till they are not. As for the player core book, the picture of the Malkva with the fish up against their face doesn't help the clan image.
I think no matter how the character is, as a storyteller we have an know the psychic information they get in touch with. In this way, almost every player with a Malkav can be guided into play.
I don’t know if you’ve read up on schizophrenia or it’s symptoms, but your first few minutes really nailed auditory hallucinations. It’s not always disturbing, not always evil, not always loud, but it always IS. The only medicine I’ve found is keeping my ears busy.
A lot of depictions of schizophrenia also forget to demonstrate paranoia. I've had nights where I genuinely believed my entire family wanted to murder me.
I really like how you voice act the character. I think it's the first time it has grasped my attention this much that I actually enjoy the character you play.
In my current Victorian campaign, a Malkavian Methuselah is instrumental in keeping the peace in a relatively large geographical area (unbeknownst to even the Ventrue Prince of her city). But true to her Clan, it is unclear how and why she would do such a thing. One of the Malkav player characters is unknowingly a scion of her ancient bloodline.
Honesty this one of the MOST hardest clans to play as! I can happily say that I share it to very dear friend of mine who love this clan! She loved it! Thank you!!
I played a malkavian that was a serial killer before he was turned. So when he became a vamp he gained the ability to hear the people he killed and it sort of influenced the things he did. Think Deadpool with fangs . It threw my group for a loop when he would out of nowhere say some very intelligent piece of information and then slap a rubber glove over his head and start reciting modern major general. My dm actually told me at one point they wished I would let loose a bit more and give into his derangement.
Some people portray malkavians as almost or completely insane like in the classic vtm, which some are, but I like to think that different malkavians have different levels of insanity. Some are absolutely nuts and some are a bit crazy, while others are in between. I also like thinking of them having varying types of insanity. Some may have multiple personalities while some may talk to trees. Malkavains are so complex to me because malkavians don't have to show they are insane, insanity is first and foremost, mental. A Cainite may be close friends with another cainite and never know that they are a malkavian because they don't show their insanity physically. I've always wanted to see a malkavian that has an insatiable hunger for death and destruction or something like that, but never or rarely shows it. It just seems like an interesting idea to me.
the books state that, the older a malkavian is, the worse it gets. So the elders are pretty much doomed to a fairly severe degree of " insanity"(I simply use that word to encompass all the potential illnesses, they can have, since we don't have time to list every type) but the younger ones might not even seem that insane.
I personally found Malkavians that are portrayed by their players as completely insane lunatics to be the most boring ones. Sure, you can do that, but it also robs the character of almost all possible facettes a Malk can and should have.
I hope we get videos on how to play caitiffs and thin bloods in the future in fact I would love videos talking about caitiffs and thin bloods in general.
I have been playing a malk for a short while now. For the most part I play her as a normal night nurse turned vampire but adding that little bit of stilted and deliberate movements and either making no eye contact or way too much eye contact can go surprisingly far.
Never played a Malkavian before. But, I played a Brujah who was more or less adopted by Malkavians. My elders in the Clan were too busy for the neonate. So my group I ran with in the LARP was myself and three Malkavians. I always enjoyed the antics we got up too.
Proposal: Conspiracy theorist Malkavian who, in the course of attempting to understand and contextualize their madness, has started looking for evidence of what their inner voices and instincts are telling them. Scary part, they're far, far too frequently right. Edit: They are a detective that works for the public as well as jobs for other vampires. They are publicly listed as a "vampire detective." And they dress in incredibly tacky vampire cosplay the whole time. Somehow, this reinforces the Masquerade by excusing any and all odd behavior as being "part of the bit."
As a storyteller I love having a Malkavian on my crew. Gives lots of possibilities and it is wonderful to see the player trying to understand what they are seeing/hearing
As a Storyteller I am very suspicious of people wanting to play one. I found very few people can do it without being disruptive or unconvincing although those who can are amazing. That said my main NPC in a several year long campaign was a very old malkavian who everyone underestimated. Malk's are amazing storyteller tools and either great benefits or problems for your campaign in the hands of players.
I got an idea for a sadist Malkavian. They're not into politics, but they are a somewhat respected figure in society. They're a competent Malkavian that gives advice and guidance. Their mental derangement is Sadism. They like to play pranks or gaslight people, it's all in good fun. But in the end they are a dependable person.
Mental illness is a very touchy subject but people without those mental illnesses can still pull it off if they research and play it respectfully. One doesn't have to exactly play a real mental illness either for instance they could choose a supernatural disorder like believing you need to purify blood before drinking it, or believing you consume the souls of the victim along with their blood. There is a massive variety of options so if you have any disorder no matter how minor you could realistically play it out not needing to go for having Schizophrenia or anything.
the trick is to not really think of the character as "a Malkavian", but instead just make a character with some serious issues that seem organic to them. hope that makes sense
My favorite clan after Tremere and Toreador, and the most difficult to play. It goes without saying Malkavians make excellent SPCs and are difficult to get right as a player, but once you've found a good Malkavian player you can have some amazing scenes :3

I liked the lore with the great prano, but at the same time, hated the idea of Malkavians not having dementation. It takes away the signature discipline, which is one 9f the things that make Malkavians stand out. It's like having Gangrel with no protean.
I kinda like how vtmb portrays them as poets. Ha ha, I like how this video has your avatar constantly showing different expressions at random. I think it sort of befits the Malkavian clan. In any case, I've played two Malkavians in two different chronicles and I portrayed them as a little eccentric as opposed to criminally insane. The way I see it, even though the clan was cursed with inherent mental instability, there's still an amount of reason to their "madness". For example, there's a Malkavian named Dev/Null in the video game called Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption who may seem to be in a world of his own but he is able to see through lies and disguises. This makes you realise that he knows more than he appears to know and is not completely nuts.
You know, I might not hear voices, but other than that I'm pretty sure I have what that guy has without any of the cool vampire powers to go along with it. ADHD = Lamer mortal version of being Malkavian confirmed lmao
I have paranoid schizophrenia and I like to think we're the closest to a really "typical" malkavian, since schizophrenia manifests in so many different ways. The attention problems? They're incredibly common! A lot of us have "hyper reflectivity", which is being unable to filter out impressions and senses we get from our surroundings, to such an extent that we can't pay attention and zone out. We also most commonly hallucinate by hearing voices, but not all of us do. Some of us hear them in our head, some of us hear them from people who are actually talking (just saying the wrong things). This can also cause us to zone out because we simply can't focus. These attention things (coupled with it also being a symptom of its own) can make us have random, long pauses in our speech and disturb/disorganize our thoughts completely, making conversations quite out of sync! I know ADHD shares some of these problems with us and I'd love to see malkavians with strong ADHD! Maybe manifesting the voices in a way that isn't our typical psychosis? That'd be interesting!
@@vvamp2400 Thank you much for the input! It's rare to run into actual schizophrenia sufferers for most folk, so hearing from one in a clear and public way is a treat indeed. Bless ya.
@@Osric24 Anytime! Malkavian characters have so much cool potential regardless of whether they're based off schizophrenia or not, but I hope I could provide a little bit of insight if players decide to go that route!

That's my answer, I hate White Wolf's attitude with mental health issues. They never got them right.
I mean, malkavian madness is supposed to be an over exagerrated supernatural depiction of mental illness. It's not supposed to be accurate.
