Ah my hometown. Downtown Grand Rapids has a 99 walk score. Needs more bike infrastructure and better transit, but it's just perfect for walking. There's heated walkways in winter between a lot of the buildings which came in handy when I worked downtown. Cut the walk in the cold from a half mile to 100 yards. You can see one of them at 6:09.
I have visited Michigan quite a few times over the last 10 years and have found that Grand Rapids is a lovely city. I recall a day where i had nothing to to so I just walked ( I was staying at he JW Marriot on the river) and ended up in that area I believe is called Heritage Hill and it was lovely - especially in an Urban environment like that.
I'm happy to hear you had a great time in my city! I was born and raised here, and I loved the Grand Rapids area. I had a friend that was a chef at the j w marriott. So I hope you come back again and explore some new areas.
Other than the river, not really a walkable downtown like Detroit, reminds me of a suburb like Troy were buildings are far spaced apart and there are open surface parking lots. Downtown Grand Rapids is also divided by two unsightly expressways that dominate the landscape
What do you mean not a walkable downtown? We have one of the most beautiful downtown. There is in Michigan. Lots of history. We have art prize. There’s tons of museums. There’s the walkway. There’s fish ladder music venues lots of entertainment downtown. I walked downtown quite often. you must not live in Grand Rapids.

Heated walkway? It sounds cool , it’s pretty nice walking around there in summer:)
Beautiful!! Planning to visit Michigan sometime next year, can't wait 🙂
You couldn't walk this peacefully in the city where I live right now. I really can't wait to see MI and Grand Rapids in particular.
