I’ve just bought one of these BW-16D1X-U which I’ll be receiving Monday. Your review just gave me a good idea on what to expect from this device, your video is well documented on every aspects including the most insignificant features. I’ll look forward start working with my own. Thanks for your review.
DarkStoneCastle - thank you very much for the Asus Blu-Ray USB External Burner review. You were very descriptive and easy to understand - your review will help many people in their decision to purchase a competent external Blu-Ray drive. - Chipper F. Xavier, Esq.
GReat video, what I am mostly looking for right now, is a newer External DVD/Blu-ray player for my computer just so I will be able to watch my movies on it, so will this pretty much do the trick I hope?
nope...not the straight forward way! you have to void the warranty and tweak its firmware to make it play commercial copy protected movies... better to see reviews of the model you intend to buy before you buy.
@@nid274Really? Not really … they usually play more formats than they write … whats the point if they do not do what they are made for .. be a BluRay drive … play BluRay. My Pioneer plays everything even UHD. You must tweak firmware to go codefree … but not play your country code BluRay. And youtr not supposed to copy those.
How'd it hold up over time? I'm looking for a new drive after my LG failed (pretty much the day after it went out of warranty), and I don't particularly want to get screwed again.
Is it some mechanical problem or... Cus' maybe dissasembling it and cleaning it of dust then reinstalling the driver might fix the issues. If it doesn't tho, then your writter is gone for good -_-
😂 What useless question … how us this anybody supposed to say? Crystal ball? Whether you will get screed again you must try out yourself! No way round that. By the way warranty is the time the manufacturer guarantees it to work … once out of warranty they can die! Often hapoens. Nothing to do with getting screwed … this is life! 😂
All of a sudden my ASUS external DVD writer is showing up under my '' this pc'' as a ''BD-RE Drive'' as opposed to it showing up as a ''DVD RW DRIVE'' as my other external DVD Writer is. Am I right to assume the BD means blue ray? It will not recognize my DVD+R DISCS, My DVD-R, or my DVD+RW discs, and it has been working well with those discs up until just recently. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
That it shows BD is completely irrelevant as a BD writer is downwards compatible! Whats concerning is that the DVD writer us not recognised any more. Update driver, re-install, check age driver. Maybe a new driver messed it up. But sounds like its broken … as said BD drives play DVD as well!
Hello, the one I have is a 'lite' version which, if I remember correctly (haven't used it in a long time) can only write. I think it's the ASUS NON-LITE versions that can do both, read and write. Don't quote me on that, but I think that's how it goes.
@@incredibleunknown2686Yeah … most read more than they write … whats the point in that if they do not play discs … and … what scam … you buy a writer and must buy an additional player for your PC?
In my case , the blu ray discs didnt work to play up only dvds. I was forced to buy a bluray player "program" for windows , then it worked to play up blu ray discs. I also had problem with the blu ray player to not showing up in windows but after researching on google i solved that as well.
Nice vid. Just purchased this drive. Witch program are u using to burn blu-ray? For burning image files which format would u advise me to use? MT2S or MP4? Or dose it matter? Someone please help with this question.
That's the 'pro' version that comes with a stand that holds it vertically. Mine is the 'lite' version. The 'pro' version also has software that allows you to play blu-ray discs from the Asus drive itself. But, the pro version costs twice as much.
You are kidding? Copy protection! You cannot simply copy copyright protected stuff! You must use software managing copy protections which is illegal! Why copying a PS3 disc? Buying an original PS3 disc is about a £ … copying/burning it is even mire expensive!
What nonsense is this? Sorry … what a waste of discs … does your TV have a PVR function? Then just hookup cheap hard-disk to record. If not forget it … its s computer drive!

What utter and complete nonsense! Sorry … Biggest nonsense that I have ever read! The first BluRay burner was released in 2003 and was 4000$! DVD R/RW burner in 2000 did cost 500$. 50$ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

The model in the video can not play blu-ray movies that you buy in a store. It is the 'lite' version. The more expensive version will. I would think they would have come out with different models since I recorded this video. You'll have to do some research. :)
