Some reviews on Amazon said it gets rather warm inside and that after some extended use the lubrication inside applied from the manufacturing can dry out, causing scratchy noises whenever you eject a drive until you re-lube it. Along with the access times sometimes being super long and the USB 3.1 connection being recognised as USB 2.0 by Windows. And the CD/DVD burning not being that good either. One review said, as it has no active cooling one shouldn't burn more than 5 discs after another. In their review it said that after 1.5 years of use it broke as some plastic parts inside have melted. Have you encountered any of those issues or similar ones after having used it for backing up your stuff?
I made myself a 3d printed outer casing with a big fan that's always on. Maybe you know someone with a printer who can help you. I know, a product should work without such measures but I guess we cant3have that anymore.
Maybe you should not listen too much to inline crap ‘that you have heard’. Samsung is the most obsolete manufacturer trying to sell its crap to customers, but is still bought as there are bought positive feedbacks. Same with negative!
I’m definitely interested in this disc drive since I want to back up all of my PS1 games and also watch my anime blu rays on my PC other than using my PS5. It’s just a cool device to have and I love disc drives.
I was thinking about using it as a player more than recorder, but you never know when a long-lasting backup may be needed. Besides, Asus earned my trust during the last almost two decades, and this will make a nice set with my gaming pc with Asus Rog motherboard and accessories
Nice, same here. ROG ASUS Crosshair 8 Hero wifi mobo with 64gb ram and a 24gb ROG Strix 3090 GPU. I was just using this video to ensure it was actually plug and play before I plug it all in.
You must specify this … 4K BluRay you do not need to do it for! But those have nothing to do with UHD! UHD you can inly play with SGT Intel CPU … and even they cannot play them all. Short … for UHD forget PC!

Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///G:\'. Check the log for details. Is there a better software to use? Thanks for your help.
VLC … just use google and read what you need to do! Cannot believe people get too lazy doing a 60 second google research to get what they are looking for! Instead expect people writing all the shit into the comments! Go and look it up! No problem to use it!
Also thinking of getting this asus or the OWC Mercury Pro to backup blu rays for plex. Have you had any issues ripping blu rays? How long does it take to rip one? Thx!
The software that comes with the unit is outdated so you cannot play DVDs or use any of the included programs. Plus they will charge for each program to update. So it cost far more than they advertise.
Use some common sense? Of course you must pay hard cash for suitable software! Or simply use free software. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 The focus is on data any way! Its not to watch DVD or BluRay … for this go and buy a proper player!
The time when digital is really good is when you’re at home or have a phone, but if you are collector, the loves movies then you should get Blu Ray and 4k

UHD a different standard it does not read … why should it … there are no blank discs and its predominantly a writer! And … UHD cannot be displayed on PC’s … only with old Intel SGT CPU’s!
Hello Simon. Can I connect this to my Sony Android TV with Google TV OS to play my personally written BDR and BDXL? I have a dedicated player, the Panasonic UB820 but it doesn't play certain files. So, I want to take the advantage of VLC player on Google TV. Thanks!
Probably doesn't help you but I can connect it to my Linux laptop without problems. Can you connect ANY optical drives to your TV? Because then it probably works.
I purchased this along with 16x blu ray discs and I cannot select 16x write, only 12x. This is in both the included software and native windows writing tool. Drivers on PC and firmware for the burner are up to date. Any ideas?
What is this nonsense for? The blanks are still quite expensive! Go and buy the damn BluRay instead of pirating! People like you destroy the discs! You must illegally get around the copy protection! That will get you to jail!
Can You read Blu-ray 4k discs in this device?, and send the information stored in the disc to a AVR in order to manage it so You can get HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos, Hi Res audio, etc, etc and enjoy movies en Ultra HD 4k on the TV?. Thank You!!
There is a way but not from the disc directly. First you need to flash the drive firmware to a libredrive firmware to enable 4K support. Then rip the movie to your NAS storage and then use plex or some other streaming software to stream it to your smart TV/AVR/media player etc…
Use some common sense. It is a discount BluRay burner … go and get a proper BluRay player to watch BluRays … when you say 4K … do you refer to UHD? Thats not 4K BluRay! Thats an entirely different system requiring a UHD player, UHD cables, UHD TV and UHD ports! Better familiarise with the different systems a bit.
Region goes through the player you use. You have to download VLC, go to Tools > Preferences > Bottom left: Show settings to All > Input/Codecs > Access Module > BluRay. And there you can change the region it reads.
It's not compatible with Ultra HD Bluray. I can't find anything on the website though (besides what you already found). So more than 2 layers --> you're out of luck it seems. Edit: The Asus SBW-06D2X-U and SBC-06D2X- U can read and write to BDXL.
@@joeschmoe3815 I ended up buying one anyway lol, I found out that the blue and red lasers are for blu-ray and dvd, not for read and write, and that means if it can write them it can read them too, so the one I got works fine

When your HDD or SSD fails, or you have concerns with cloud storage then discs are physical and long-lasting. Discs make sense 100x over.

Reads and writes 4k UHD as well?
If not, can you personally recommend one with all the features mentioned in addition to 4k UHD?
