This is why I like Kevin because he's not just showing off cowboyn free handling a snake for views he actually gives us information that's very useful which I find satisfaction in
And it also helps us appreciate the animals even more, which is another reason he gave for why he doesn't try to show off with the animals. I think his style actually contributes to why they're so calm since he's focusing on the animal's comfort rather than focusing on how cool he looks on camera.
Kevin!! I hope you are doing alright!! I've picked up on the comments you make here and there. You seem like a very kind, genuine, highly educated, person and this world can certainly be cruel!! People such as yourself, remind many of us how decent people can be!! But it can take a personal toll!! The world can be beautiful as well, and I hope you have a network of friends and family that help you remember that!! Hugs from Waxahachie Texas!!
Even if you have years of experience and work with 'deadly' animals, they can still surprise you. Its also easy to get complacent - especially if you have years of experience without 'incident'. Even if you think you know the animals, the way they 'generally' behave etc, you never really know whether that animal will switch, especially if its not feeling 'well'. Its also different if you are dealing with 'wild' animals as you don't know the personality. I bet you wouldn't stroke a 'wild' Gaboon like you do yours - because of that. I have utmost respect for Venomous Snake Rescuers who deal with wild, more unpredictable Snakes that are going to be 'generally' more defensive than captive bred
Kevin, we can always count on you to be the voice of reason. There are way too many hot-shot venomous keepers in the hobby. Some of them I really enjoy on RUclips, but I worry about them at the same time.
Such an important reminder here. That cobra got a really good bite on Chandlers finger and he is very lucky to be alive and well. He was also handling them like he does to his captive snakes which makes it so much easier for them to bite. There is NO way we have fast enough reflexes, even if u have been handling them for years. Hopefully this is a big lesson for everyone that works with venomous! Thanks Donny and Kevin, really important message here. 💜☮️💜

That'd be so cool having king cobras produced by Kevin and nerd at a zoo in my state. I loved out of Africa haven't been in sometime but it was amazing
Two questions if you happen to see this: 1. Is Poppa your king cobra still around? 2. Do you ever see yourself getting one of the Albino Gaboon? I saw primitive predators must have picked one up assuming it came from Reptile Garden, they are stunning.
Him picking up the Gaboon female was. "Dad, What are you doing? Why am I flying? Can you put me down somewhere? Wait, Where's my Boyfriend? Do you have food? Or water?" If I ever own hot snakes the top 5, in no particular order, are: Gaboon, Rhino, Eastern Green Mamba, Timber, or Diamondback, Rattlesnake, and Eyelash Pit Viper. Have you ever made a video on how you check the follicles on your cobras? You have helped me go from terrible fear of poisonous snakes, to a healthy respect. Thank you for what you do
Kevin: "I love you!" Gaboon viper: **Hiss** Pretty standard behaviour for a woman who has just given birth tbh. 😂😂 Especially one who just had 17 kids!!
dream of mine is to keep a king but need a good deal of experience with elapids before those giants. was curious of what i was seeing or if i was seeing it with the broken ribs. unfortunate they had that but good thing is we are learning better care for them. at least i would hope so. appreciate everything you guys do at NERD!
I’m currently in the process of talking my s/o into letting me get a snake. (He’s got a fear of snakes) I think a ball because they’re soooo sweet, and I have experience with them. But when he gives me the go ahead, I’m getting one from you guys!!
1st thing I wanted to do when I moved out of my parents was get a snek, & now have several breeding corn sneks. My mom won’t come over- a happy unexpected side effect!😊😊
A Ball will change how he feels about snakes 100% I've never be phobic but wary. After we agreed to rehab an abandoned Ball, this grandma fell in love. He's still here 12 years now. Sully, my grandsnake 😊
I think the combination of Kevin and Clint from the Clint's Reptiles channel will help lean anyone into giving them a fair shot. The two of them show the little guys as pretty loveable
I've had a couple of balls (sounds wrong 😂) in the past and they were both the sweetest animals. So mellow and laid back. I can't imagine anyone not liking them once they get to know them. Good luck. 😀
Sunshineravens 🤣🤣🤣🤣💀 but I told him the same thing as some of you said, that getting a ball python would definitely change how he looks at snakes. He’s always afraid to get bit, but even if a ball python bite you, it’s not gonna hurt more than my toddler when she bites. So if he can handle a toddler bite, I’m sure he can handle a little noodle nibble. 🤭🤣 he does a lot of work for houses that are owned by banks, and every time he finds a little snake, he sends me a picture….. so I definitely think he is warming up. Because When I was pregnant, with my oldest, about nine years ago, I remember him killing a wild snake, and I cried so hard. I explain to him that that snake wanted nothing to do with him, and was just trying to run away. So now, he sends me a picture and relocates it! So, we are definitely making progress.
If only everyone who handled animals, dogs included, had this attitude towards and respect for the animals. This is the best video I've ever seen with someone handling snakes.
I have much respect for you, because you always tell the important things about each snake or what other animal that you may show on your video. As always thank you for sharing ❤
Yeah Chandler's bite was nasty, but I was impressed with his composure and ability to remain professional and remember his training. King Cobras seem to be way more mellow than other Cobras.
I think if he was truly professional he would have used tools like hook. Handling venomous snakes with his hands is ridiculous. No respect for him anymore.
These are also my 2 favorite venomous species. Such magnificent creatures and definitely not deserving of the stigma that they just want to kill you. Show respect and common sense and they are amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to keep venomous, but if I did, these 2 species would be at the top of my list.
Do you have to do a specific type of cleaning if you were going to put nonvenomous in the now open cages? Or is it not much different than a regular snake enclosure?
Good Afternoon Kevin and NERD Family, I hope everyone is having a great day today!!! It’s always a good day when I get to see Kevin’s vlog!!! Usually I’m earlier but I was the 444th like and that’s special 😊
Kevin, when are u gonna invent the new “Hand” snake hook?? Seems like the snakes are better supported with the hand, although a bit more rigidity might be better.
Is retta soil good for ball pythons for their enclosure? And I have a 40 gallon tank for our ball python. I say it's probably about maybe 2 feet long. Maybe and I need to know. Do they need a couple of lights? I know that you heat light and I know they need A. Cool late for a cool zone. But they also do they need a UV a light or something like that?
I dont know if Kevin went over this question before but, Question for Kevin. How did you get started working with venomous snakes? Ive been looking for an apprenticeship (in my area), and just curious how you got your start?
That Lucifer video was definitely hard to watch. To see him doing so well today shows that Kevin did the right thing. Lucifer is one special, spicy cobra.
There is a lot of danger in getting complacent because you are very familiar with one animal (or possibly more than one). So you are fairly good at predicting their behaviour and what you can safely do and don't do with that specific animal. But that can let to forgetting that A. something unpredictable can always happen and B. that other animals you aren't familiar with may behave quite differently and are possibly not as chill with some things as yours is. I am very fascinated by all snakes, but I have zero interest in ever handling one that has lethal venom. That said I do have an animal that could potentially kill me, even on accident. No venom, but 500 kg of body mass (and some prey instincts you will never be able to get rid off completely) have quite a bit of potential for blunt force trauma. I nearly got knocked out once because I stupidly put my head in front of my horses leg in the direct motion range of said leg to look at an injury. She thought I wanted to look at her hoof and lifted it up... hitting me in the side of the head with a joint (is it really called "knee" in english, because that's not the knee, it's the equivalent of your wrist...). It was very predictable and just very stupid of me. I have no need to add a lethally venomous snake to that forgetfulness.
Closest I came to a horse taking me out was fastening the butt rope behind a horse trailer. Second horse to load, walked right on. As I reached to snap the rope, the two horses smelled each other, one squealed & I felt a hoof at maximum speed pass between my arm & chest. Direct hit to the chest would have killed me, I weigh about 100# That said, 8 years ago I got crushed under a low boy trailer & pulverized my left chest at 57 years of age. The Metal Granny yet rocks but only rides trail anymore.
So Donny, what you’re saying is that I should tickle Kevin when I see him at AnimalCon? Got it😂 The Kings are looking gorgeous and my favorite, the Gaboon, is incredible! I love them…with much respect!🐍❤️🐍
Since king cobras are snake eaters, I'm not so sure I would be letting my thick, long, snake-like braid swing around in front of them while getting ready to handle them💚 But Kevin is on top of it 😸
If you show respect to animals they will show you respect within reason...reason of common sense(I know it's not so common anymore- I've witnessed the decline!!!) but the repect is also part of understanding what harm that animal can do to you if it wanted and I think that's were too many people faile animals... Kevin has show's great well rounded respect to all the animals he comes in contact with- large or small, scaley or feathered, walking or inching...He can appreciate their beauty, their place in nature, and the potential chaios they are capable of.....it rare to meet people who can see things so clearly, frankly, it's awesome!
Theres a saying for explorers or those who are into dangerous hobbies. When a novice makes a mistake its a rookie mistake but when an expert makes a mistake its a dangerous accident.
Kevin, why do gaboons get so heavy, animals are usually good at regulating their weight. Obviously the anaconda are big because they are long, but they are stocky. Is it like just in case.???
If your Kings reproduce and you are able to give back to where they originated from, that would be the ultimate example of how I've seen members of this community support one another. I love that. Do you know what triggers ovulation?
It made me sad here Kevin talk town on himself! Love you Kevin! Not sure what all the haters out there are saying to burrow into your head but forget them! Keep doing you
Snakes don't venture out just for grins. If their temp is good, their tummies full & they have cover, they're happy to stay put. It's a way to conserve their energy.
Is there a reason why your website wouldn’t be working? I was gonna go on and window shop, but it said the website was down 😭 could I be doing something wrong?
Sorry Melissa, I don’t seem to get notifications when someone responds to my comment, so I didn’t even know you were trying to help me. But yes, now that I type in what you just wrote, I can get access to the website. But before, when I was having issues, it was saying something like “error in domain” or something along those lines, and it was just basically saying that the website wasn’t available but it’s working now! TYSM!
Did anyone else catch Kevin saying he doesn't want to be alive as it is. I used to have a gf who said that and she ended up taking her life. I take that serious now. I don't like when people say stuff like that.
I do agree that taking these kinds of things seriously is better than not taking them as such and then it’s too late to get them help. I also know that not everyone who says it intends to take their own life (such as myself, though admittedly, I used to) and just wants to vent their frustration/upset without being told they shouldn’t say that kind of thing if they’re not being serious because that could push someone over the edge if they were half-serious
Yup , use the snake hook if you don't want to see a Cobra hanging on your finger like a Pit Bull on a tire . 😃 Honestly , i wasn't surprised at all . Free handling is the snake version of Russian roulette . Click , click , click ... boom .
Can someone either link me a video or shed some light on this? Why breed the cobras? I get taking in a rescue from a bad situation or rehabilitation for these venomous snakes but i dont understand why you would breed them. Only a very small group of people can work with them, so it kinda seems like breeding them makes it easier for someone unqualified to get them. Maybe im missing something here, i mean no hate at all just trying to understand. I really respect everyone at NERD.
Kings are important just like any other animal. He said that he wanted to give back to the place that originally Kevin’s Kings came from. But other zoos and private facilities and venom extractors would want them too. Of course Kevin won’t sell them to just anyone. That would also be a big accomplishment for Kevin if he was able to captive breed them. I hope he’s able to do it.
@@melissaf.5898 you're totally right! Plus zoos and hospitals in regions where certains venomous snakes are native NEED antivenom, and captive bred milking snakes are easier, healthier, and safer to work with in venom labs. Can you imagine milking a wild caught king cobra? 💀
There was a short i think on this page a while back of someone else getting a gaboon out from a taller enclosure & it was trying to get out & fell pretty far down & i was thinking that couldve hurt the snake pretty bad :/ . & now you saying how fragile they are worries me about the one that fell😥

In the video he stated the zoo they got these cobras from put them in tubes when they were young to feed, this in turn broke some ribs and caused what you are seeing.
@@beanapalooza6614 I was wondering that about the first one too. Noticed it had something going on before Kevin brought it up. Hmm I would assume it's for the same reason but 🤷

@@katiekane5247a lot of people would be happy to stay in their rooms all day if you brought them their meals, doesn’t mean it’s healthy for them
people aren't snakes@@Purplesquigglystripe
Great video guys
The soil I'm talking about is called.
Repto soil it is from zoomed
Is there a reason why your website wouldn’t be working? I was gonna go on and window shop, but it said the website was down 😭 could I be doing something wrong?
I would keep trying, maybe it was being updated or something??? Good luck
Did u search New England Reptile Distributors . Com ?
Sorry Melissa, I don’t seem to get notifications when someone responds to my comment, so I didn’t even know you were trying to help me. But yes, now that I type in what you just wrote, I can get access to the website. But before, when I was having issues, it was saying something like “error in domain” or something along those lines, and it was just basically saying that the website wasn’t available but it’s working now! TYSM!
Felt that kevin
Did anyone else catch Kevin saying he doesn't want to be alive as it is. I used to have a gf who said that and she ended up taking her life. I take that serious now. I don't like when people say stuff like that.
I do agree that taking these kinds of things seriously is better than not taking them as such and then it’s too late to get them help. I also know that not everyone who says it intends to take their own life (such as myself, though admittedly, I used to) and just wants to vent their frustration/upset without being told they shouldn’t say that kind of thing if they’re not being serious because that could push someone over the edge if they were half-serious
That is so cool and dangerous too and yes guys use your hooks with u are deal with them please
Yup , use the snake hook if you don't want to see a Cobra hanging on your finger like a Pit Bull on a tire . 😃 Honestly , i wasn't surprised at all . Free handling is the snake version of Russian roulette . Click , click , click ... boom .
How's the extremely injured snake doing from 3 weeks ago?
& now you saying how fragile they are worries me about the one that fell😥
have you looked into getting a double hook? it would help a lot with the gaboons!
This is why I don't have snakes or go herping. . .I can't even tell if that's a cobra or not since it's n0ot hooded up. smh

Why is that King flat in the middle??
In the video he stated the zoo they got these cobras from put them in tubes when they were young to feed, this in turn broke some ribs and caused what you are seeing.
@@HumanAfterAIl yeah, but did the same thing happen to the 1st one? Probably did, but i was just wondering lol.
@@beanapalooza6614 I was wondering that about the first one too. Noticed it had something going on before Kevin brought it up. Hmm I would assume it's for the same reason but 🤷
Shots fired 😏
Make sure you use your equipment 🤣🤣🤣🤘🤘
Can you train them not to bite
