Great job, Steph, I love the choice of green colors and the lime pop made it pop for sure. I like my spiders to run the other way. Folding the shirt in half and have the sleeves toward you then spiral clockwise or sleeves away from you and spiral counterclockwise. Thanks for sharing:)
Thanks, Crystal. I call the ring around the center an “avocado seed” and it either points up or down depending on which way you spiral. Doesn’t it look like a seed? Steph, Love this! But since you spiral folded this shirt and added dye in the pie, why does this look like a spider versus a spiral? What’s the difference between the two? Thanks for all your videos!
Good question, Heidi! First: The reason it looks like a “spider” is because it was centered first. (folded in half) Second: A different color was added to one side (Raven Black) I have a handful of “spider” shirts. Watch a few to see if it helps make it easier to turn on the lightbulb 💡. I really like this way of dying. Getting ready to try it. One question. Why do you use different sizes of ice? Do it matter what size, or does the size achieve a different result? Thanks again - dye on!
You’ll have fun ice dyeing! Smaller ice melts quicker and has more of a flush. Dense cubes melt slower and more color splits happen. I think anyway. With the black I wanted to have more control. I didn’t want it to completely saturate the entire shirt. All that being said,,, I really don’t know 100%. I haven’t done any scientific study. I should do a side by side. I think we would all learn a lot! Try different ice and report back. 😉❤️🌈
I started with a Jacquard tie dye kit from the craft store. I’ve been meaning to make a tutorial… I think their kit is better than Tulip brand, but Tulip works too. Jacquard colors are more vibrant and closer to “real” dye. A kit is a great place to start. Make a couple shirts and see if you enjoy making tie dye. If you do, I recommend getting “real” procion dye and soda ash from a dye company. The kits in the long run cost way more and you’re limited on colors. I use Dharma Trading Company, but there are other companies that I’m not familiar with. Hope this helps. 😁❤️🌈
Oh me I love this combination. Steph may I ask if you know roughly how much powdered dye you use in a large or ex large tshirt and if it's close to the same if you liquify the same powder and use the liquid form?
It takes 2tsp to 8tsp of powder to mix liquid, depending on the * on the container. I use less than that when ice dyeing. Using the bottles mixed with soda ash uses even less dye. Now all that being said… you might be able to make several shirts with liquid. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, they’re both fruit with different flavors. Liquid creates one result and ice dyeing another. ❤️🌈
@@BelladonnaDyesCo thank you so much for your reply. I'm just starting out and was wondering if the powder or liquid would cover more fabric for practicing. I figure I'll burn thru some learning 😁

Hi, Allison. You could be, or not enough ice. It’s hard to say. The most important thing is batch time. The dye needs to have time to adhere to the fibers in the fabric. Are you batching for at least 24 hours at 70° or higher? Using soda soaked shirts? When I do the “two minute” microwave method I have a ton of dye being wasted down the drain. ❤️🌈
@@BelladonnaDyesCo I soak my shirts for at least 30 minutes in SA and then spin them almost dry. By the time I've folded the shirt, it's totally dry. I thought I was using enough ice but maybe I need to go back and add another layer. I'm trying to learn to be more conservative with the amount of dye I use but I guess I need to be more focused on how much I'm using. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it!
@@allisonbzdafka8301 Ok, it’s not the soda ash. If I see a lot of undissolved dye I’ll hit it with a second layer of ice. If you find you’re needed more ice a lot then you probably are adding too much dye. Start going lighter. You can always add more dye if you need to. ❤️🌈

I’ve never heard about ice dying until a few weeks ago, what are the benefits of this because it seems like you use a lot more dye and the process is a little harder
You’ll love ice dyeing once you do it. The main benefit for me, is not having to mix liquid dye. Liquid dye creates solid colors and definite lines. Ice dyeing is more relaxed and gives color splits. (“splits” = all of the base colors show up with ice) It seems like more dye is used with ice dyes, but I think it’s apple and oranges, I pour out a lot of unused liquid dye once it’s expired. I specifically talk about saving on dye in this tutorial by using the bottles. If this is your first view it might be a bit confusing.
i am half way doing the tarantula. black is just right as you show then i turn it over. is it not too wet to apply green colors? i was always told shirt should be dry before adding dye powder? and soda ash?tia Steph
I dye damp always. It will be wet from the moisture from the black. Flip it and keep going. Add your dye, ice and soda ash. ❤️🌈
@@BelladonnaDyesCo thank you for the tip about ice dying dying on damp. thanks for taking time to help really good to know rules can be broken.the time waiting for shirts to dry used to stress me out lol
Do you ever sell any of theses ?
Not yet, John. My closets are bursting! I have an Etsy and I’m slowly adding items. I’m a one woman show, plus a full time front line worker, so it’s slow going. In the description box I have all my links listed so it’s easy for you to check out my social media stuff. Thanks for your interest!! ☺️❤️🌈
Can I do this shirt without the Ice?
You can liquid dye it if you want. I have other spider shirts. ❤️🌈
TY
I noticed in this video you use 1/4 cup soda ash to 6 tsp dye and in the HWI video you use 1/4 soda ash to 2 tsp dye. Is the difference because one is ice and one is hot water irrigation? Want to make sure I'm using the right measurements for each. Thanks.
Only the Raven Black has the different ratio. The greens are the 2 tsp ratio from the thermal hoodie tutorial. ❤️🌈 ruclips.net/video/YSfe5ydNvPk/видео.html
@@BelladonnaDyesCo Ok thanks going to try this method. I waste so much powder dye because I havent quite gotten the tapping down yet so I think this will be easier and not so wasteful.
@@sharylmcdonald7003 I love these bottles, especially if I’m making multiples of something using the same colors. If you get them let me know what you think.
I’m super frugal and I wouldn’t waste money or dye if I can help it. ❤️🌈 Check this out. ruclips.net/video/xuI3Dvq19Fg/видео.html

There’s something about ice dye that you don’t get with liquid dye
I agree 💯! There is a time and place for liquid but I think ice is prettier to look at. ♥️🌈

I told you the wrong kind of markers Crayola, not crayon.
I use Crazy Art brand mostly, they are the inexpensive ones. I found them at Walmart but most stores carry them. I also have used Crayola brand and haven’t had issue. I use the yellow and green the most. Orange & pink. I haven’t really thought about it, but possibly, subconsciously I match my pen to the dye colors and they don’t show up. 🤔 Now I’m going to have to pay attention. Try washing your project again and see if you can get it out. ❤️🌈 www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/Kieralon-Dyers-Detergent.html?lnav=chemicals.html
Dangit and I thought my moisture tainted sea green could be salvaged😪
You could try it. Was there soda ash in it?? If not it could be salvageable maybe? 🤷♀️❤️🌈
@@BelladonnaDyesCo there was not I was just using the same spoon to lay down dye and I usually use a dry cloth to wipe it off. The dye built up and I had to use a damp one to clean it. I thought I dried it...I did not. .but there was no soda ash in sight so that gives me hope!

If you bend those fork tines enough, they'll break off completely. Especially if you buy cheap pot-metal forks from a charity shop.
