Sad dearth of people that see nuance in political discourse these days.

Civil liberties have ALWAYS been under attack in canada, just ask first nations. The two groups have EVERYTHING in common except for what they are actually protesting about. So its easy to tell how partisan and NOT interested in human rights somebody is if they go off on a rant about the truckers protest, but then think its perfectly fine to stamp out protest rights in alberta.
Ok, there are TWO differences because people will rightfully state that in Alberta they didn't use an EMA and it wasnt' the feds. Thats fair enough but to those protesting the effect is the same whether the cops moving you say "well this is because X says you can't protest overnight".
What people should remember is that long ago the "Occupy movement" were protesting on public land and MUNICIPAL governments then did the work of trashing their rights and removing them. In the case of the New Brunswick capital the Mayor LITERALLY admitted that they were trashing their civil rights.
So it really makes no difference WHAT level of govenrment is doing it, the obvious point in these things should show you ALL levels of government are complicit in robbing your rights, in more ways than one. And its ALMOST always elected government, there are branches of the bureaucracy which are designed to PROTECT rights. They don't do a particularly good job, but they exist, which is why from 'the right' we see a push to crush down the bureaucracy and generally use 'populist' tactics to over ride rights, while on the liberal side you see them attempting to control the bureaucracy to do so.

Except nowhere in the Constitution are you granted the right to break the law whether in protest or for profit. When you break the law, the police are allowed to do whatever illegal and tyrannical crap they choose, because you are breaking the law. They won't abuse you, assault you, run you off, or seize your stuff, if you don't break the law, well, at least not if you don't break the law and don't support truckers.

@@user-sm3ii5dk1uWhat it kind of sounds like you're proposing, is that if I break the law, in any sense, or any level, that gives the police the divine right to murder me. There's a sliding scale of response to lawbreakers in most polite societies. If there wasn't, you'd basically have to give the state unlimited power and threaten every single citizen with death for camping illegally.
The Coutts folks broke quite a few ordinances - blocking traffic is a crime, causing noise complaints, harassing businesses. None of this prompted a response from police, until a guy handed a big bag of guns to an undercover. That, and the sonnerad flags that went seemingly unopposed. But until that, a few lefties I know were alright with the Coutts antimaskers.
Also, I don't want overnight campers thrown out on the street either! We're in the middle of a housing crisis! Who TF told cops to put the boot to unarmed students? Should the students have armed up, if this is the response they can expect from law enforcement? And if not, does anyone have the right to protest?

Putting all my natural thoughts aside I will only comment on one of Amber's points in her tweet. You do NOT ask questions for me. You make a career of trying to advance and actually force the narrative and agenda I have worked my life against.

The trucker convoy was parked illegally. Pat King gloated about choking off traffic.

    • @JonathanSicoli

I can think of a few reasons why cops would give Coutts a slap on the wrist for literally months, while booting unarmed students and lying about them supporting Hamas.
One's a lot more harmful to authority, and the other is a fun larp that actually enshrines authority. Guess which one is which?

      @@JonathanSicoli That makes no sense.

    • @JonathanSicoli
      @JonathanSicoli День назад +1

@@frijolero6048 a lot of conservatives insist on a seperate set of rules for them and not for other people. Like you said, Pat King gloated about choking off traffic. The Coutts protestors had a faction that gave a bunch of guns to an undercover cop they thought was a supporter "just in case", and there were a bunch of low level ordinances that were being broken in that case, as in this one.
The thing is, modern day conservatives have no problem with power or the lives it can potentially ruin. What they have a problem with is that they're not the ones wielding it - a ton of conservative christian ideology is about hierarchy, and by establishing a top down order, with them at the top, conservatives can "restore order" and avoid challenging systemic abuse.
If conservatives truly cared about freedom from the government, they'd understand that giving it more power (as PP plans to do with the notwithstanding clause) gives Trudeau (or whatever PM comes after him) more power to crush protestors like themselves. But they're not actually FOR freedom for other people.
I hope that makes more sense.

B/c both protests demand the gov looks at their own policies & reflect if they represent Canadian's.
We're are lapdogs of the US, so foreign policy is often implemented based upon our relationship with the US not on morality or human rights. Conservatives sold privatized/ sold off/ closed our labs here in Canada, which made us dependent on the worlds vaccine supply. Unfortunately Cons are the-Leopard Eating People Face Party.
