    A beefier version of the Z bracket will be welcomed. The current version works fine for lighter payloads, but is challenged by heavier payload, and more so with some wind as I discovered when we were at Crater Lake recently. Looking forward to the new version.

    I learned from Eric Benedetti that when shooting wide angle, get a laser pointer and point it through the center to align the tracker with Polaris. No need to be perfect when doing a wide angle. Makes setting up the iOptron so much faster. You only need the exact precision when using focal lengths over 85mm

    I’ve heard great things about those Nitecore batteries, congrats on that sponsor! I wish they made em for Nikon… This was a really nice vlog, your shots came out great and that HaRGB process is fire. Also agree on the trackers. In my opinion, the SGP is the one to get for hiking and portability, but the SWSA has the edge for deep space. Interestingly enough though Sky Watcher is set to have a price increase soon putting the pro pack more expensive than the SGP kit.

    A lot of good information. Thank you! I'll be looking forward to the new Z bracket.
    In one video several months ago you asked viewers to describe how they use their Z brackets, which i didnt do at the time. Since you're designing a new one, I'll put in my two cents. I use mine upside down, because I've found that I'd rather have the panning ability at the top. I placed an Arca plate on what is designed be the top, so that I can place that in any tripod head with an Arca clamp, most of which already have a panning function. Then I used a double-male screw to attach an Arca clamp on what is supposed to be the bottom, so that I can just attach my camera that always has an Arca plate or L-bracket on it. That gives me a panning function at the base (from the tripod head) and at the top.
    My suggestion is this. 1) Put bubble levels on both sides of the top and bottom plates, and/or in the sides of the plates. 2) Put degree markings on each side of plate with the panning dial, so the bracket can be used in either orientation. 3) Either include or make available a low profile, circular Arca clamp specifically designed for the Z and V brackets that can screw in without the need of a double-male screw. In fact, you could have a mark on the bottom of the plate, on the hinge end and by the panning locking knob, and have degree markings on the Arca clamp instead of the bottom of the plate.

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  2 года назад

    I have the Star Adventurer, Polar Alignment in the Southern Hemisphere is a nightmare. The good thing about the iOptron Tracker is that you can get it with a built in iPolar alignment camera, perfect for the southern part of our planet. I wish SkyWatcher would do that as well. Although, the iPolar can be attached to the Star Adventurer it becomes tricky removing for camera mounting.

    A couple of points on the Skyguider Pro, as this is the tracker that I use:
    1. I have the ipolar version which comes with a built in camera to aid polar alignment. It allows extremely accurate alignment and is a very nice feature. However, one huge miss for ioptron with this is that they only have a PC app, which means you have to carry a laptop with you to do the alignment. Why on Earth they don't have mobile apps I don't know.
    2. The built in battery: it lasts for _ages_ and I have never been caught short with power. But in case you are, then you can always plug in a USB power bank and power it straight from there. So not a big deal.

  • @chicken_person
    @chicken_person 2 года назад

    Interesting to see the Samayang in action, I thought it was interesting when it came out but I already had the Sony 20mm f/1.8, so I just stuck with that. It seems to be really nice for the price, though.
    Also nice to know that the infinity focus button works properly. I got the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 relatively recently, and while it's excellent for astrophotography and less than half the price of the Sony GM, for some reason the infinity focus is WAY off right out of the box for my copy of the lens. I also don't have the lens station, so I can't change it. It got great results with manual focusing though, even on the Omegon MiniTrack LX3, which is a completely manual wind-up tracker which is fantastic for wider angles but falls behind once you get past around 200mm or when your payload reaches 3-4 pounds.
    I definitely need a better tracker in the future, but I'm a bit torn on whether to jump for one of the cheaper star trackers or to save up for something like an HEQ5 for higher-quality tracking.

    • @davematthew21
      @davematthew21 2 года назад +1

      Hey mate, I too found my 135mm Samyang to exhibit the very same issue you had to deal with. However I was able to correct it and set it up without the lens station. How I managed this was to have focus peaking turned on first. Switch off the camera and turn it back while pressing the focus button (to have it turn on astro mode) then rotate the focus ring till my screen showed peak focus and then what you need to do is long press the focus hold button (3secs) and it now stores this new focus point as the infinity point - you will know its successful when the led light flashes and turns green. To test it switch it off and turn it back on to activate astro mode again and you should have it focussing to the point you preset it too.

    Hi Alyn, very interesting new lens, thanks for your useful tips and the high quality content.
    I was wondering if I am the only one shocked by the fact that the sony a7iii doesn't have a "night/red-light" mode for its screen. On my old entry level canon dslr I could enjoy the night sky without being blown away by the brightness of the screen. Do you know if there is a reason for that or is just Sony not caring for this important detail (extremely easy to fix with a tiny firmware update). This missing feature is driving me crazy, I don't get why they wouldn't implement it.
    If you could give us your opinion on this it would maybe help me to find peace ;)
    Thanks a lot and clear skies!

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  2 года назад +1

      I do'nt think Sony cares much about astrophotographers. We're such a small niche. They could implement longer shutter speeds than 30 seconds, they could add a timer to the screen when using bulb mode, they could allow shutterspeeds longer than 30 seconds in intervalometer mode, they could stop their stupid spatial algorithm from adding weird colours to the stars. Yeah, they don't care haha Screen brightness at -2 is OK at night.

    Wont that infinity button on the lens move out of focus with different temperature? If it’s calibrated to infinity during a hot day then you use it in a cold night surely it will be out of focus?

      Theoreticaly yes but I doubt it would be enough of a difference to notice. I'll find out in time.

      Scouted that spot but didn't like it because it was looking over a main road so would have been lights going through the shot constantly

      @@AlynWallace yes that is a drawback of that spot, I usually go to military pass road. Anyway thank you for your fun work and sharing, which do you find more usable full spectrum or HA I have converted HA through Spencer’s and really enjoy it, but now I have moved on to mirrorless and need to convert again. That’s quite a setup full spectrum camera and narrow band clip in, Stellar, I look forward to your tutorial of how to blend them.

    Can you do a long shoot for hours and let the battery die, while the camera and battery saves your work just before dying? Like the original battery does. Or is all work just lost, because the battery just dies? 🤔
    I hope the USB port will be a standard on original camera batteries soon. Om-1 doesn't come with a charger, and therefore needs to be charged in the camera. Really annoying.

      Unfortunately seems to be unit dependent! I’ve seen other videos where it was on par with the Sony 24GM and again others like his where there was coma present.

      A prime lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 will be brighter at f/2.8 than a zoom lens at f/2.8. Less vignetting and better light transmission. f/2.8 is not the same on two lenses. For that you need to use T-stops not F-stops.
