  • I GET A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT RUNNING AN OUT-OF-STATE PLATE ( ESPECIALLY WITH AN ATV/UTV). IS IT ILLEGAL?
WILL I GET PULLED OVER AND WHEN I DO, WHAT HAPPENS?
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS EXPLAIN TO THE RESPONDING OFFICER THAT YOU HAVE ALL THE VALID DOCUMENTATION, SHOW THEM YOU HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED STREET LEGAL EQUIPMENT AND INSURANCE. FROM THERE THE OFFICER WILL RUN THE PLATE, REGISTRATION, INSURANCE AND IT WILL COME BACK VALID AND YOU WILL BE OK.
A FEW THINGS TO NOTE - IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO RUN AN OUT-OF-STATE TAGE. HOWEVER, YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS LICENSED FOR ROAD USE, INSURED ( WHICH YOU CAN DO THROUGH my team at SELECT INSURANCE by calling 855-GET-SELECT)AND THAT ALL THE NECESSARY SAFETY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED IN YOUR STATE IS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE.
TO ADD TO MY RESPONSE HERE - MOST LICENSE OFFICES WILL LICENSE THE VEHICLE AS A QUAD-CYCLE OR ‘MOTORCYCLE’ WHICH SHOULD ALLOW FOR YOUR ATV/UTV TO BE SEEN NO op
DIFFERENT THAN A MOTORCYCLE, TRIKE OR SLINGSHOT
SO WHEN AND IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU - BE POLITE, EXPLAIN TO THE RESPONDING OFFICER THAT YOU HAVE DONE YOUR DUE DILIGENCE AND YOU SHOULD BE O-K
IF YOU HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE LEAVE THEM IN THE COMMENT SECTION. I WILL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER BACK COMMENTS AS QUICKLY AS I CAN. I HAVE ALSO PINNED A COPY OF ALL THE LAWS AND REGULATIONS FOR EACH STATE IN DETAIL IN THAT SAME COMMENTS SECTION.
    BE SAFE OUT THERE GUYS!

Wisconsin has explicitly told me that it doesn't matter where your registered or if it's through an LLC or not, you will be ticketed and your vehicle will be towed. This was when I moved here from Montana and got pulled over within the first week I moved here with Montana tags. The guy was nice and let me off with a warning but he said he wouldn't do that the next time. I have scoured and scarred the internet but I cannot find any court cases or case law on this. You wouldn't have any case law links would you???

But you don't have to have all the required equipment that your home state requires if you are legally registered in another state and insured right? Isn't that the whole point of going through the out of state process? Otherwise I'd just pony up and buy all the extra parts my home state requires and go to the DMV here. There is no way that someone driving a now street legal vehicle (UTV, for example) cross country is required to know every state's specific UTV equipment requirements, for example. That'd be insane.

It’s legal to have a vehicle registered and plated under a business (llc) in another state. Your home state doesn’t have any laws that will hold up to make you register unless it’s under your personal name.

I have a Defender Lonestar HD10 and we are having problems with the Park Rangers of Cameron County in South Padre Island, Tx. Is it legal to use the UTV under the same state law of Texas with register plates of Montana or Arizona or do you know if they themselves can enforce banning UTVs under their own laws.

Missouri is hilarious. Says right on my ATV title and paperwork that it is "not for use on any open or public road." Yet they still say you are supposed to "register" it with the state and call it a "vehicle" on the title. Even though it cannot be driven legally on any road. lol. They just want it registered so they can collect personal property tax. I'll get right on that🙄
