if you want a faster more moving your feet tune, try "Bodhisattva"
if you want a more disco-ish club sound try "Hey Nineteen"

Steely Dan is some of the most advanced listening ever seen on this channel. Most people don’t get it. It’s filled with jazz chording, odd time signatures, instrumentation and harmonies. It’s one-of-a-kind. They have more of a nerdy cultish following. But there’s no denying their greatness. It may just take a few weeks listening before it kinda sinks in. Legends for sure

Ohhhh, dude. Can never go wrong with Steely Dan. No other band like them. Such talent and creativity. They definitely lean into jazz, especially going back to Brubeck, et al. The chord progressions are complex. Also, I think it usually gets lost on people that you can always understand the lyrics. Thank you, Polo!

Steely Dan has an incredible catalog and variety in their styles. I was a huge fan of their music, but many of my friends didn't get them. That was back in the late '70's and early '80's. Given what you've listened to so far, I think "Kid Charlemagne" would be a good reaction. Lots of funky instrumentation and creative lyrics. As usual, thanks for the honest reactions, they're so refreshing.

Since you’ll typically get the same 10 or so songs requested by people who want you to listen to Steely Dan, I’ll recommend some other fantastic, lesser requested songs: Caves of Altamira, Chain Lightning, Only a Fool Would Say That, Your Gold Teeth, Glamour Profession, Gaslighting Abbie, Lunch With Gina, Godwhacker, Almost Gothic, Negative Girl, Night by Night, Green Earrings (banger), and Home at Last. Also the rendition of Reeling in the Years from the Alive in America album. They also have two insane unreleased songs: The Bear, and the Second Arrangement. Btw, Donald Fagen has some amazing solo stuff that Becker helped him with- most of which is barely indistinguishable from Steely Dan.

I dont think SD was ever very concerned with genre. They were musicians who loved music, and would use whatever idioms would serve their purpose. It's why I have always loved them. The refused to be limited. Well trained musicians themselves, they had a vision for what they wanted, and used whatever talent was available, and whatever technology was available to achieve it. True artist. Earlier than most.

Steely Dan is one of my top 10 bands! I used to listen over and over to them in the 70's as well as now that I am older! Their older albums are really good! I loved the combo of the music, rich with rock and jazz overtones, haunting and smart lyrics and then Donald Fagans unique voice! Just like with Bowie, Freddy Mercury and even Elvis the vocals are unmistakable! The rhythm section is very recognizable too. I have always loved bands or musicians that have the quality of story telling and "Katy Lied", "Countdown to Ecstasy" and especially "The Royal Scam" are in my opinion the best! Every single song in The Royal Scam album is amazing! Check it out! "Kid Charlemangne" is a great song as is, "The Royal Scam"! Regarding this song, they started with the outline of a classic 12 bar blues, but the form is too constricting for their musical proclivities, so there are more than 12 bars per stanza, and there are way more than the usual 3 or 4 chords. It's a brilliant song, one of many in their catalog. I'd recommend listening to the following Steely Dan songs: "Haitian Divorce," "Kid Charlemagne," "Home at Last," "Rikki Don't Lose that Number," "Reeling in the Years," "Jack of Speed," "King of the World," "Dirty Work," and "The Things I Miss the Most."

SD is probably one of the most influential bands of all time. Lead by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker the rest of the band was mostly the top studio session musicians of the time.Fagan was "infamous" for having multiple musicians come in to play parts, then he would pick the best one. he might use 20 or 30+ tracks to pick from, he was a perfectionist and the results show it. There is no tighter band. Their music is very complicated in the timing, progressions and cords. If you get a chance give Deacon Blues a try or Hey nineteen. ruclips.net/video/ICK6e9WK2A8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/earDfJM4guQ/видео.html

Just went through Steely Dan's catalogue the other day and counted 80 that were memorable for me. But then, my Grandma had a boomer name (Alberta).

Your mention of your grandmother's juke joint reminded me of a roommate I had in college who said to me in a deadpan thick southern drawl on a Friday night ... "You goin' jukin' tonight?" My introduction to southern.

I guess this is what they call a "fusion" Band. It's a mix of Rock, Blues and Jazz. Steely Dan sort of transitions in and out of all of those genres, sometimes within the same song.

I was already a dedicated radio kid by Steely Dan’s debut on the airwaves, so their music is formative to me, inspires some of what I reach for in my own compositions.
But, I don’t love everything Steely equally. Most of Pretzel Logic, the album is hard to skip. Maybe “Rikki” but only because it got played near to death. For me, standout track on the record is “Monkey in Your Soul,” for its deceptive start, just for starters: when that beat turns and drops into a pocket, you’re hooked.

Boomer name is Donna and certainly not old enough to be your grandmother. LOL. Guess you had to be there when their music was at its peak. Loved all of the songs they played (Reelin' in the Years) and it brings back loads of memories for me. One of my top 5 bands.

Steely Dan is another one of those bands, from that wonderful era before music was forced to be locked in to a single genre, by the marketing department
