The 201 Red Line is the original section of Calgary Transit’s CTrain Light Rail System. The line first opened in May 1981 between Anderson Station and Downtown. The northwest leg of the line then opened up in 1987 to University Station. The line had seen further extensions to Brentwood in 1990, Dalhousie in 2003, Crowfoot in 2009, and finally Tuscany in 2014. In terms of the original southern leg of the line, the line was extended down to Fish Creek-Lacombe in 2001, then to its current terminus at Somerset-Bridlewood in 2004.
In terms of crossing equipment, the Red Line is certainly the more interesting between the two CTrain lines. With the original sections of the CTrain opened in the 1980s, the equipment used was purely Safetran, with EM gate mechanisms being chosen. Between 39th Avenue and Somerset-Bridlewood, the line runs parallel to CPKC’s Aldersyde Subdivision, in which CP maintains the main road crossings (Calgary Transit maintains the pedestrian crossings). Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, all the signals with EM gates were replaced with newer US&S equipment, which is currently Calgary Transit’s go-to equipment for new installs. Some interesting installs and modifications happened in the late 1990s, as seen with the Safetran Type 1 at Heritage Station, the Clear LEDs at various crossings along the line, and GS Type 1s. Overall, a pretty neat line for some one-of-a-kind crossing equipment that can only be found on this system compared to the rest of Canada.

Definitely a great line for unique crossings. You won't find stuff like this on CN and CP!
