    oh my god? this thing is so gorgeously produced, it's CRIMINAL how low your view and sub count is. insanely good points made throughout and if i werent so viscerally tired i'd probably ramble a lot more
    despite how much i've seen it talked about, the actual VIDEOS that mention 'I Saw The TV Glow' feel either vaguely vapid or incredibly hard to find. the way in which you discussed it felt kinda cathartic. because yeah, mainstream audiences really didn't resonate with this film and it was notoriously harder to understand than something more generalised - probably harder to resonate with than even some more experimental A24-type horror films. i can't speak on 'Vivarium' or 'In A Violent Nature' but i really, REALLY appreciate how you broke down your key points and related them so smoothly to everything else in the video. genuinely, this is just. such a great video essay. goddamn.

      Thank you! I was a little worried I'd missed the mark with my comments on I Saw the TV Glow, but someone raised some great points in the comments that did give me some pause, so be sure to read those when you get a chance. :) And feel free to share the video with folks, as well, if you'd like.

    I Saw the T.V. Glow felt like a love letter to Buffy the Vampire Slayer from queer kids in the 90s

    I can't believe this channel only has 770 subscribers - putting out high-quality, often long videos on a fairly regular basis, it feels like you should already be much bigger.

      I basically took a year off making content due to burnout left over from running a different channel. But! Since I've been back at it, the channel has been growing quite nicely. That said, sharing the video with people you think will get something out of it (even if they're not writers) helps immensely! Thank you for the kind words.

    I loved In a Violent Nature. It is supposed to be slow and the film doesn’t work without all the walking or the incredible ending. Experimental horror is something that I am a massive fan of. That’s why I also love Skinamarink. And I think that I Saw the TV Glow is a masterpiece and by far the best film of the year. Top three of the decade as well.

      So, would you say you're in Camp 3 for In a Violent Nature? Glad you loved all three. I think Skinamarink is my favorite out of the bunch, though.

      @@storyrant I’m not really in any of the camps you stated. The kills weren’t the main reason why I loved the film. I loved the slowness, the cinematography and sound design, the dark humor, the play on slashers of the 70’s and 80’s, and the themes about the inherent violence of nature.

    I watched "In a violent nature" a little after it came out, after I listened to a few of my podcasts just to get an idea as to what I was getting into. I knew what I was getting into and enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends just based on the pacing of the film itself. Other than that the shots in it are really nice, the gore is a good touch too. For skinamirink, I watched this after it was put on different streaming services(which I regret), it's awesome imo. The different scenes and shots in it are amazing and scares are great too!

      Yeah, the effects work was pretty solid. I think his next film will be something special. I think there was mention that he might start on a sequel at some point.

    Vivarium was an amazingly creepy movie but I, however, do not share the same distaste for Jesse Eisenberg lol. While yes, his role as Lex Luthor was the absolute worst, he's mostly been a decent actor imo and I think he was perfectly suited for his role in Vivarium. The Zombieland movies and American Ultra were two of my other favorite roles he's done! I also stand by Lovecraft Country as an amazing look into the struggles of being a black man during that time period and played on H.P. Lovecraft's racism in a way that was very eye-opening. We definitely need more of these types of stories in the future!

    • @storyrant
      @storyrant  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, I acknowledge it's just a me thing. lol And Lovecraftian horror is awesome, and we can't undersell Lovecraft's influence (it's in the name), but the genre is also anti-thetical to the beliefs he held at the time...so it makes perfect sense to critique those things in modern Lovecraftian fiction.

    I'm a transman and I didn't 'like' I Saw the TV Glow. It didn't resonate with me like it did a lot of others, although my wife loved it. But on the other hand, while I agree that your fixes would definitely make it more accessible to the general movie goer? They would also water down a lot of what I think the points and the themes are. Sometimes a movie isn't meant to be interpreted other ways and lots of weird fiction allows you to take away other than author's intention. So I don't think it would really hit with its intended niche nearly as well. You don't know anything is wrong, necessarily, as someone who transitions late (I was 35). It all seems exactly as fine and as ordered as the world is meant to be. Girlhood wasn't wrong or uncanny, but there were places that felt better than others. Sure. Isn't that the case for any person though? Just like... one day it occurs that there's something- I dunno, you meant to do? And you're not getting younger?

    • @storyrant
      @storyrant  2 месяца назад +1

      That's a fair point. There's really no way for me to know how changes would mess with the allegory, given my obvious lack of transness. Which highlights the importance of own voices. Research can only really get you so far. My editor and I are thinking of producing a video on the difference between representation and own voices, and all the nuances that might include since a lot people seem to think it means: "if you aren't x, don't write about x at all."

    Stopped this to watch IAVN, I enjoyed it! Never felt so much peace while watching a horror movie. I thought it was refreshing and atmospheric. Didn't care much for ISTTVG

    • @storyrant
      @storyrant  2 месяца назад +2

      Glad you enjoyed it. The nature documentary aspect wasn't something that totally worked for me (hence why I didn't mention it in the video) but I'd be curious to see how the director handles a sequel, since apparently he plans to do so. ISTTVG is really designed to appeal to a small niche, and one of my trans buddies said he only really liked it in retrospect. It's interesting to see so many varied takes.

      @@storyrant I love that it's representative for that group no matter how small, but I think the experiences for the main character being Black would have been different than Maddy's or even the director's. I loved the vibe, music and some of the shots were magnificently composed.

    I got so caught up in the I Saw the T.V. Glow stuff that I forgot I was actually excited about this video because I wanted to hear your thoughts on Vivarium. As someone who doesn’t hate Jesse Eisenberg, I liked the movie a good deal. I even enjoyed the beginning foreshadowing with the cuckoo bird, though it was a little too on the nose for some people.
    Also, if anyone is interested in early influences on modern horror I highly recommend M. R. James' short stories.
    Also also. Another "John" currently putting out excellent work in the genre is Jonathan Sims. The Magnus Archives is a fantastic slow-burn analog cosmic horror audio drama that he wrote, and his novel Family Business left a lingering impression on me.
