Just fantastic colors, without looking fake, just like you promised. Glad you had a romantic vacation and had such sweet memories to being home with you. And artist inspiration, can't beat that combination! Thanks for sharing.
Love this demo! Your bold mark-making, your willingness to share your process, making subtle changes that make a big difference, not getting “lost in the weeds” of detail, are all so inspiring. Thanks so much!
I am watching every day and the thing that amazes me most is how it goes from a sloppy mess at the beginning to a beautiful artwork at the end. Thank you so much for sharing with us!! I am looking forward to trying some simple pastel paintings soon.
Looking so forward to next months mark making! This month’s nocturne has been wonderful. I really love being a patron, I learn so much from you Karen. Thank you.
Thank you Karen for such a beautiful/calming art, and perfect explanatory video on your technique! I've been going through some rough times recently and finding your work has been nothing but a huge mood booster. I always get disappointed in myself with doing pastels myself, trying to remember how I did it years ago but seeming to fail every time, but all these videos of yours is truly inspiring and makes me want to drop everything and dive back in again. So thank you, so so so much
I really enjoy your tutorials. Unfortunately I just didn't "get" pastels. My results were just poor. The paper was expensive so stepped back from this medium. Pastels are just gorgeous and your teaching method is wonderful.
Well, I tried my first real painting in pastel doing this sunset with you. To say I am pleased would be an understatement 💝 Thank you so much for your excellent instructions. I already have confidence to try another sunset even though I am new to pastels. I’ll be joining you in the Patreon group.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤️ my dear friend I love ❤️ the amount of information you give 💓 in this interesting💓💞 video thanks for the beautiful💕 video💯 you shared ,with all of us a big hug and good luck in what you do thanks for sharing .💓,💞 .
Love this tutorial which is very helpful. You refer to Rembrandt “new pastels”. What is the difference between “new” pastels and soft pastels? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!
Hi Karen, In searching for those Jack Richeson squares, I found I didn't know exactly what they are called. They sound and look pretty soft going on...do you have them in an Amazon store or can you put up a label or something. I like the shape and texture that I see. Thanks- Gonna give the alcolhol wash a shot. Wish me luck.
I’m able to afford to be a patron of a few artists again! I got a great job (unfortunately I broke my leg at work, but going back in about 3 weeks). So, I’m just going to watch and learn, and let myself be creative again.
I have hear that Blair is out of production so I am experimenting with others. I have tried rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and Spectrafix. I will be doing more research!
Absolutely glowing... When I try to go lighter in layers like you did with the sun, I find the lightest colors get "eaten" by the darker ones underneath...the lightest white or color ends up blending instead of sitting on top. Is this due to paper without enough tooth, or something else? It's quite frustrating! I want glow. Lol
hmmm I haven't tried it. I always thought that final fixative doesnt allow pastel to be easily worked on top as workable fixative allows for reworking. Have you worked over final fixative?
Karen is truly an amazing, extremely knowledgeable artist. I have never heard so much information in one painting from any other artist.
I appreciate your kind words!!! Thank you!

They are called Richeson Underpainting blocks. Here is a link:www.dakotapastels.com/products/Richeson-Underpainting-Blocks
I’m able to afford to be a patron of a few artists again! I got a great job (unfortunately I broke my leg at work, but going back in about 3 weeks). So, I’m just going to watch and learn, and let myself be creative again.
I hope you will join us!! I wish you a speedy recovery!
I did at the $6 level (I also bought more pastels online, but hey if I’m allowing myself creativity again…)
KAren you are always awesome - I was going to tell you you have no sleeves to have tricks up them 😁
Thank you!!!
This is beautiful! Thank you. ❤️
Thank you so much!
Really beautiful! What other low-odor fixatives do you use? Blair is sold out everywhere.
Lol
It could be the tooth of the paper but I find that it works best to use a super soft pastel for that last bit of glow and press HARD!
@@KarenMargulis That makes sense! So maybe I should invest in some very soft pastels for those top layers. Thank you!
@@ElizabethBattlethe Schmincke white is a must have!!!
Mine turned out black. I've never used alcohol before, do you rinse brush in water during the alcohol process between each color?
I don't rinse the brush but I start with the lightest colors first and wipe my brush on paper towels in between colors.
Karen , on workable fixative , why not paint over regular fixative?
hmmm I haven't tried it. I always thought that final fixative doesnt allow pastel to be easily worked on top as workable fixative allows for reworking. Have you worked over final fixative?
No, I was just wondering what the difference was. Thank you.
❤❤❤
So you only sprayed the darks? How did you get it not to run?
I only used a very light spray. It won't drip with a light spray. Thanks for watching!
Not sure if you can change it, but unfortunately there's a typo in your title. "Subset"
Thanks for letting me know!! I was able to change it!
💕💯🎨🎨🎨
Wonderful. Thank you !
Glad you liked it!
