I just bought a 50mm Summitar from 1951 and, other than having someone just lubricate the aperture ring, it is in mint condition and takes wonderful pictures!
Thanks Matt, I'm here from Flickr. Within the Leica M mount and LTM mount, I have owned and used the Voigtlander 50mm F1.5, Zeiss 50mm F2 zm Planar, Zeiss 50mm F1.5 ZM sonnar, Leitz 50mm F2 summicron, Leitz 50mm F1.5 Summarit, and also the 7Artisans 50mm F1.1... out of these, my fav overall is the Zeiss 50mm F1.5 Sonnar ZM. I've enjoyed your website reviews as well. The ZM 50 F1.5 Sonnar is a great overall package due to cost, lens size, build quality, and great rendering without breaking the bank.
MaNemRob 。 Ah thanks for visiting from Flickr! You’ve used a great lens line up. I did try the Voigtlander 50/1.5 one time as a student let me use theirs. I agree the Sonnar is tough to beat. I might try to buy again one day if I have spare funds!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I was shooting with Leica rangefinders both film and digital but now currently on a Canon EOS R. Well the nice thing about adapting to mirrorless is that the adapter has close focusing so now I can focus at maybe approx 0.3 meter instead of 1 meter. You have an amazing lens and camera collection, and an even better collection of photos from all your dedication and work!
MaNemRob 。 Hi yes after just getting the MFT Lumix GH5 I’m starting to appreciate the close focusing of mirrorless like you say! Thanks for the kind words, yes I will try to feature some of my many cameras in future videos to keep it interesting! Lots to come! :)
timotius hi congrats on your new lens! You won’t be disappointed. I noticed it is widely regarded as one of the favourites/ best amongst fellow Leica photographers. I know people that use it on a Sony body too. Enjoy! Matt
Very informative. I like your calm presentation style. Out of 50mm Leica M lenses I have the collapsible f/2.8 Elmar and the f/2 Summicron-M Titanium 6-bit lens.
Jesse Koskinen thanks, the Summicron M T’ sounds a great lens and the f2.8 makes a useful compact setup. Do you have the close focus goggles for the Elmar? They are great for when you want to get
This is an incredible video, thanks for putting it up! I just snagged an M240 and starting with Zeiss 50/2 and 35/2.8 since that’s what I could afford and they got good reviews. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for a used 50/1.5 that I can confirm doesn’t have back focus issues to hold me over while I save for a summilux ASPH!
Yankee Rider congratulations on your M240!! Thanks for checking out the video. Yes the 50/1.5 is excellent if you get a good one. I’m in the process of testing many more 50mm lenses, all different to those listed here so I’ll put a review together once I’ve done more testing :)
Great review as always m8. I just purchased a Dr. Ding (yes really) 50mm F1.1 quite a small design. 'Twill be interesting to see how it performs, £299 cost not expecting miracles, but in the review I have seen stands up well against Summilux 0.95 and 1.2 apart from flare and build quality of course.
I sold the ZM Sonnar (but do miss it).. kept the DR. Later bought a CRF mount vintage Sonnar and still use that today. Sonnar is better at f2 (more contrast and apparent sharpness) DR focuses closer so useful on a RF camera.
The one is missing on line-up is 50mm Cron APO. I'm really interested how much you get for the high price tag and not much real life reviews of it. THanks for the channel!!1
Thanks Mark! A man of good taste! :) I'm with you on that I think. The 50 Lux ASPH is one awesome lens. Have you tried the vintage Leica close focus 50mm options?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom no unfortunately not yet. but its on my radar. i sold one of my favorite lenses ever, the 75 lux, which i regret deeply. another question, i loved your review of the xpan, do you think the 90mm is worth getting ? so far i only have the 45 which is awesome by itself
Marc H Hi Marc, selling the 75! Ouch. I feel it! On a positive yes the 90 is awesome and gives the camera a second use/ look. Not too expensive either if get lucky (vs Leica)
Wow, I just replaced the Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 with the Rigid Summicron 50 mm lens. The Zeiss was also too sharp for me and the Rigid made the MD262 not only shoot like a film camera but now the images look filmic...!
Congrats! Yes Cron is softer (this video was one of my first. See full reviews on most M mount lenses made after this time) LLL Elcan 50 f2 is a Summicron copy and is very filmic
Thnx for your review. Really enjoyed it. I am toying with the idea to get a summarit 2.4 besides my summicron iv. I thought i was crazy, but now i see all your 50mm’s it might be ok to get a second 50mm 😉
Paul Hek haha thanks Paul! Yes they all offer something slightly different and it’s nice to try different lenses I think :) My Summarit has been excellent so I’m sure you’ll love the f2.4! 👍🏻
Matt, what a great comparative exposition of so many 50mm alternatives. Your descriptions of the virtues, weaknesses and sometimes flaws which can be exploited in these examples, has persuaded me to give more careful consideration to how the character of my lenses will contribute to the already filmic look delivered by the old Kodak sensor in my M8. It's not only about the numbers, important tho they are, but the character of the intended outcome too. Many thanks for so kindly sharing your hard won wisdom.
Thanks Barry, bring one of my early on videos it is far from perfect (such as no photos examples) but I guess it works as an overview and might be thought provoking for some, as you such such as for rendering. Thanks for feedback!
..not wanting to focus another video on you I’m guessing you’ve seen my M8 video! :) ..as you mention that camera! Yes great filmic look from that sensor!
Wow! I own the 50 Elmar 2.8 but I didn't know about the possibility of having dual range...your videos are so full of contents! thank you very much. Class videos!
Riley Smith thanks Riley, yes to clarify you can use a DR on a 240 up close (like I do) but it won’t focus past about 1.1m. As a portrait photographer I’ve never noticed the non-infinity bit ha but yes worth noting. And if it won’t fit on the M240 watch that bit of the video again to see why / what you must do. Thanks
Thanks Raymond. I bought most my lenses but 7A existed so I've never used any of them. If I get chance I will try to get some to test in the future! :)
Love the videos Matt. I’m keen on the Jupiter 3 50mm f1.5 but I’ve only seen thread mount on eBay. Nothing for my m6, are only the silver ones bayonet?
Hi! You can only get the J3 as thread mount or Contax mount. You need to get thread mount-M cheap adapter.. see some of my other lens videos and the Series 2 playlist for more info.
Nice reviews Matt, intresting experience report. I have actually Zeiss Plenar ZM 50/2 and the Jupiter-8 50/2. I had the China Noctilux 50/1.1 but it was too heavy and was too long not used so I sold it. Keep on the good work !
Hi thanks! Sorry I missed your comment notification earlier. Thanks for sharing what lenses you use. How do you like the Jupiter-8?! I've not tried that lens.
@matt Osborne Thank you, that was an awesome review. What do you think about the ZEISS ZM 50mm f2 Planar T ? A lot of folks tell it comes close to a Leica 50mm lens.
Thank you Martin, as you may have seen in the video I sold mine but there is a link in the video description to my images with the lens. Compare it to photos in the other links for other 50mm lenses. It is sharp for sure.
I've been following your channel for a while, great stuff ! I don't think there're many people out there own more lens than you. I'm quite surprise you didn't introduce the Pre-A summilux. I bought pre-A version ( kind of vintage lens , not really old, mostly 70s to 90s ) for all focal length because I really enjoyed the softer lower contrast look of vintage rendering rather than the sharp, high contrast look of modern lens, and yes, I shoot only film, and mostly black and white. I have 35 summilux , 50 summilux , 90 summicron all Pre-A. I would like to know your personal opinion about pre-A lens and ASPH lens.
Thanks Francis and nice lenses! I actually don't own any Pre-A Lux lenses, that's why you've not seen me share them. I have the Pre-A 90 Cron, lovely lens! If I ever get the 35 or 50 to test i'll certainly share my thoughts + images.
Matt I love these videos, I just got a Leica M6 and Elmar 50mm f2.8 but I’m looking for a 35mm, please do the same you’ve come for the 50s for the 35s!
Just discovered your channel. Great stuff! Would you happen to know if the summicron 50 mm f2 DR lens is fully compatible with the MP (type 240) Leica digital camera?
Hello, I’m not sure about the MP but I would expect it to be the same as the M240 as it is physical restraints from camera design not software etc. For the M240 see the link under the video to MrLeica.Com
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I got the Summitar earlier this year and I am impressed by it due to it's very unique vintage look which separates it from all the others. I especially love the swirly bokeh of this lens. It's lower in contrast and more prone to flare than the newer Leica 50/2 designs, also corner sharpness is not as good. But the images I got with this lens are simply amazing!
@@MB-or8js Thanks Martin, i'm listening! :) I have the Summarit 50mm f1.5 which may give a similar look but that said I may keep my eyes open for a Summitar. It has a look a like the sound of! Thanks for commenting and informing me and others. More videos soon! :)
@@MB-or8js Hi Martin, thanks for bringing the Summitar to my attention. I had heard of it but had never looked at one closely. After much reading, photo viewing and some bidding I just won myself not only the 5cm f2 but also a iiif :D As "MrLeica" it's only right I should have an early Leica too. Very impressed with what the lens can do in the right hands.. keen to see what I can get this setup to achieve! Thanks again
Hi Matt, have you tried out the voigtlander 50mm f1.2 nokton vm? I found it perform quite close to my summilux asph (being maybe a tad softer wide open). I really can't decide which lens should I keep... I need to sell one to fund my film hobby haha.
Hi! Yes I shot with a Voigtlander fast 50mm years ago when a student brought it to one of my model photography workshops in London. I can’t remember which model though. At the time it didn’t blow me away enough to buy one so probably a different lens. Haha yes I know what you mean. My best advice from experience is don’t sell great lenses as you just buy them again afterwards ha.. or make sure you keep the best. I will leave that to you ha :) More videos soon! Thanks Matt
MrLeicaCom thanks Matt. The 1.2 Nokton is the new one with aspherical elements launched at the end of 2018. They are also launching a 35 1.2 just this month. I highly recommend you try it, to my eyes it’s identical (95%) to summilix asph thus representing a great value lens! It doesn’t get enough attention so if you could borrow one(maybe both 50 and 35) it would be a great opportunity for ppl to find these gems out. Really great and informative videos btw, love them.
Ziqiang Cheng thanks for the suggestion. I did look at the new 40mm f1.2 lens but I don’t shoot with 40mm that often a d it is close to my 35mm f1.2 asph I already have. Actually on www.mrleica.com there is a 35 1.2 vs lux vs sonnar 50 1.5 shoot out already. The voigtlander did very well. I use the 35mm 1.2 on my CL to give a 50mm equivalent. Check the blog for lots of examples.
MrLeicaCom cool but I assume that was the version 2 of cv 35 1.2, there will be a version 3 coming out just this month which is smaller and supposedly better optically. They are doing some amazing jobs!
Ziqiang Cheng agreed! Leica need to watch out! Yes mine is the bigger mk ii asph version. I test new Leica glass easy from store in London as they know me. Voigtlander less easy to test but when lockdown is over I will look at options 😊👍🏻
Matt. I read your article about the ZEISS 50MM 1.5 Sonnar ZM years ago. Ive been loving it ever since. What’s your opinion now about the ZM Sonnar 50mm 1.5?? Thanks for what you do.
Michael Neumann thanks! Sadly I sold my Sonnar years ago when I got the Summilux. I which I’d kept it as it does create great photos. I tried to buy another but it wasn’t sharp wide open so I sold it again.
Johnny Fotografie most of the lenses mentioned cost above £500 I think. Used prices are less. They are all different for different jobs. Picked based on the rendering, size and f stop you need.
Unfortunately it’s my last of your videos to watch So to say I kept for a dessert))) Huuuuge knowledge!!!! Really happy to find you channel!!!!! Thanx a lot , lad)))

Jim Stavrakis Hi Jim, I wish I could help but sadly I don’t have experience with these lenses. Can you find example photos to compare via Google or Flickr? Sorry.
is possible to use the 50mm lux asph r version and use adaptor to micro 4/3 cameras, i saw some adaptors but do they work well???? The leica r versions are way cheaper
plyazcady Hi, yes of course. I have video showing me use this setup. Look for my GH5 photoshoot video.. I use Lux ASPH on M43. If you see my vintage lenses for mirrorless video it shows and links the adapter you need.

Thanks Matt. Much appreciated.
Have you tried the Sigma 16 and 56 mm f1.4 l mount lenses
Seems no reviews on RUclips
Hi Jon, sorry i've not. I tend to use older lenses much of the time. If I ever get to test them I will share the results.
What 50mm lens do you recommend for around 500 pond? That is best value for that money and professional enough.
Johnny Fotografie most of the lenses mentioned cost above £500 I think. Used prices are less. They are all different for different jobs. Picked based on the rendering, size and f stop you need.
Unfortunately it’s my last of your videos to watch
So to say I kept for a dessert)))
Huuuuge knowledge!!!!
Really happy to find you channel!!!!!
Thanx a lot , lad)))
Максим Юданов thanks, I’m sorry my speaking is not clear, I will try to improve. The sub titles are a joke haha.. nothing like what I say when it come to names of lenses and cameras. Thanks for watching, more soon! :)
Максим Юданов ..if you’ve ran out of videos maybe check out the blog. There are enough articles there to last you for days! :)
got confused on all that beauties. which has the best flare preformance? 50 lux or cron? enjoy life and thx for your effort.
Road Boogie thanks for checking out the video. Lux asph has best flare resistance, great lens!
MrLeicaCom thx a lot! need it for portrai while travel. what about resistance caus i ll be in dusty regions.
btw make tutorial on „how to get beautiful ladies half naked for portrais“ i saw some images, lucky guy you are so tell us about your tricks. stay happy🤙
Road Boogie fit a UV filter to keep the optics clean, I would
Anything else as the Noctilux would be wrong! Now I will watch ... ;-)
Haha thanks Frank! I hope you found it useful and I have a part 2 video to follow with a different group of 50mm lenses for the Leicas :)
Hi Matt what do you think of the 1959-61 summilux series 1 compared to the series 2 because I just can’t find any information except for ken Rockwell who said to avoid series 1 but doesn’t explain why please help if you can. Jim
Jim Stavrakis Hi Jim, I wish I could help but sadly I don’t have experience with these lenses. Can you find example photos to compare via Google or Flickr? Sorry.
when your old n need a bed you always can sleep in my place in kathmandu😉 hope your good. keep going with your vids. stay happy
Haha thanks!
Whats the best 35mm leica m lens under 1000€ ?
There are quite a few options. Check my lens playlist. Voigtlanders are good - 1.2/ 1.4/ 2.5
Dedicated jupiter 3 video?
I thought yes but looks like no, I'll have to make one. This video covers it - ruclips.net/video/FWFGAtcph0w/видео.html
Can we have a ltm version of this video
Yes thanks for asking, I starting testing them but haven’t finished yet. It is coming and there is lots of lenses too :)
Matt Osborne thanks you!
is possible to use the 50mm lux asph r version and use adaptor to micro 4/3 cameras, i saw some adaptors but do they work well???? The leica r versions are way cheaper
plyazcady Hi, yes of course. I have video showing me use this setup. Look for my GH5 photoshoot video.. I use Lux ASPH on M43. If you see my vintage lenses for mirrorless video it shows and links the adapter you need.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks for replying i missed this earlier will do
@@plyazcady No problem, sometimes it doesn't tag the person when I reply depending if on phone, tablet, PC and what screen I use (it seems!)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ok thanks for the heads up,,,,,do you use any of the leica r lenses at all or you strictly stick to M?? If so any opinion on them
I put red tape on the top of my camera just above the lens to remind me to look at the lens instead of the screen
John Roberts thanks John great tip! I’m actually planning try try to rig up some sort of small monitor centred to the lens as my eyesight isn’t brilliant and I want to see when details are in focus (or not). If I don’t get round to this I’ll get myself done red tape! :) thanks for your help
MrLeicaCom most welcome! I have been enjoying your videos, keep up the great work
John Roberts thank you John, they will get better I promise! :) What do you prefer - technical or BTS shoots or BTS me out and about? I hope to share a mix but it’s interesting to see what people want :)
MrLeicaCom I am a fan of both, it is nice to just mix it up, otherwise it gets monotonous if it is all just X all the time.
John Roberts thanks John, that’s the plan anyway but good point we’ll made, thanks
Great review, Leica m is a mine field 😂
Ha yes, see the blog post in the description - it should help
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt I’m on it 👍

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ok I’ll do that. Thanks 👍
No Zeiss sonnar in the lineup. :(
Sorry! I had already sold it before making the video. You can find a review and sample photos on MrLeica.com - great lens. Wish i'd kept it!
Will the Leica Elmar 50mm f/2.8 lens - Collapsible work on a Digital M8. Do you need the goggles
Hi it will work on any Leica Mount camera at 1m distance without goggles. To focus close you need goggles.
dear Osborn
i used on zorki, oldish 35mm 3.5 leica lens got for a song,
fantastic , and summilux f 1.4 on my R3
20 years back
now i own LEICA D-LUX 5
do you think not as good as old ones?
Hi I have a Zorki too! and the 50/3.5. Great cameras! :) I would say the old and new are probably similar if in good light (no flare). :)
did you ever think of comparing colour accuracy of each lens? most reviewers I saw ignored this very important aspect, in fact that's the weakest link for all lenses regardless price and brand.
Hi Leo, thanks. I'm probably not the best person for this review you mention as I shoot mostly B&W but it is a good point you make.
you are so exact
i must add that new cameras in digital are more color corrected like
LEICA D-LUX 5
am i right?
I don't even shoot leica- I just came for the ASMR
Thanks! (I had to Google ASMR!) :)
The 50 cron DR will focus to infinity on an M10, just so you know.
Vinyl Island ah great to hear. Interesting. Thanks for letting us know.
Actually the Super-Angulon 1:4 can focus up to 0.4 meters.
Funktrainer ah good to know, thanks!
Mr Leica, you would do a great service to people like me who are hearing impaired and English is not our mother language, as is clearly your case as well, *_if you took a look at your videos and checked how your pronunciation sounds and the YT computer generated subtitles read._* To be blunt, I couldn't understand two lines clearly. If I ever stuble again into your channel, hopefully you'll add your transcript to the video. Huge effort and expense thrown away. BTW, please remember an image is worth a thousand words, even if they're intelligible.
La Garrapata Azote de los Bueyes Thanks for the feedback. Yes YT subtitles struggle. Other video have some key words written on the screen in English for those that can’t hear.
Triathlete, shake hands.
Thanks Rick! To you also! Hats off.
Not one of your best videos. Were you poorly?
Thanks Robert, one of my first of my 275+ videos so I think that was camera fear in my voice!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom well, you have massively improved since, then. I delight in your more recent videos, packed with good information and delivered fluently and charmingly. Kudos.
Thanks Robert! Much appreciated.. hopefully in 2 years from now I might even start to sound interesting :) That's the dream!
So much $$$$
Qassem Aleid yes but I bought this instead of a house. I’m different to most people like that :)
Your videos are too long.
Thanks Michael, this was my longest I think, one of my first. I’ve done 200+ videos since, my current ones are 8-10mins and very different. Thanks for the feedback.
You obviously have to much money
Remco Zwinkels hi no I just buy instead of house or nice car. I live super cheap then enjoy different cameras and lenses
