  • Asahi Pentax released the LX in 1980, kicking off a staggering 21-year production run that saw this venerable and stunning camera outlast all of its contemporaries as well as many that came after it. Today, the LX remains a venerable and much loved camera that takes exceptional photos, but that also presents a challenge in some ways. Repairing a Pentax LX now is exceedingly hard and, as of this video's release, I know of only one shop in the world (located in the UK) that will take a Pentax LX for repair. In general, however, these are reliable cameras and as long as they work well they are reliable and can meet any creative vision that any photographer can trust it with.

      Nice! Best advice I can have before buying an LX is to get it from a reputable seller like KEH, B&H, Adorama, or your local shop. Definitely don't just buy one on eBay or a similar site unless you're really comfortable testing it for function and have an eBay seller who will take returns.

    Your directions for multiple exposure are standard for 35mm SLRs. BUT, the instruction book gives a different method which allows going back to any previous frame and exposing it again, while keeping precise register.
    The frame counter counts backward as well as the usual forward. So, if you want to return to a previous frame, push the rewind button and turn the rewind crank to wind the film backward, watching the counter so you know when you have reached the frame you want. Go back one additional frame. Put the lens cap on, advance the wind lever and release the shutter. Now advance the wind lever as usual, and you will be exactly on the frame you want to double expose. To expose again on the same frame, press the rewind button again so you can wind the lever to re-cock the shutter without the film moving or the frame counter advancing. Repeat again for as many times as you want to expose the same frame.
    To go back to your last unexposed frame, put on the lens cap and advance the wind lever and release the shutter until you reach that frame number on the counter. No dead frame necessary, as the frame will be in its original position within a 0.2 mm tolerance.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 месяцев назад +1

      I read the instruction manual and I'm aware of that and people who can do that and properly align both frames have more skill than I do. But when I do a multiple exposure, I'm not looking for any misalignment, which means that, yes, I'm not going to let the film move and then rewind it. The end result accuracy to the image I want is more important than what the manual says.

    Oh my, I never thought they desined this way of mounting focusing screens ages ago. I did it on a pair of my APS-C ones and it was painful. But at least it didn't require camera disassembly. And also the way they mount additional grip... Wow, I thought that it is modern, only KP's feature.

    • @DavidHancock

      The MX and LX can interchange screens, even though the LX screens are another series. The LX screens are supposed to be better; brighter, as I recall.

    I have SFX. But I have not seen screens for vintage devices anywhere, only for modern ones.
    Are the focus screens of modern Pentax compatible with older models?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Год назад +1

      Screens are rarely interchangeable between models due to size, shape, thickness, and other factors. I'm not sure what screens, if any, are available for the SFX. Most cameras did not have swappable screens.

    Always informative! Thanks!
    Question:
    If using m42 lenses does the stop down lever have to be pushed to get an accurate meter reading?
    Or can the LX be put in auto mode and shoot away no need to press it in each shot?
    Obviously the m42 lens will always be stopped down anyway as it’s not linked, but more so does the stop lever tell the camera to meter differently
    About to be the owner of a 2nd LX 😳 sold the first one and started to regret!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 месяцев назад +1

      Good question. For your M42 lens, if you have a manual/automatic or M/A switch, then set it to manual and as long as the aperture is working properly you can set the aperture to whatever and the shutter to automatic and it will work just fine. The camera will think you are shooting wide-open. Because the LX has an OTF meter during exposure, it ought to be a-okay for metering without adding any extra light when stopped down.

    • @flowermaze___

      Wealth of knowlegde @@DavidHancock Thanks! The first M42 lens i'll try is a good old Helios 44m - they don't have an auto/manual switch, but there's a little pin that can be depressed so the aperture opens and closes - I guess that will be the same as setting it to "Manual"?
      Sorry for the very specific follow up question!
      Keen to try this and shoot another LX!

    • @flowermaze___
      @flowermaze___ 8 месяцев назад +1

      the 44m-4 has a little pin on the back, if not pushed in the aperture doesn't change with the turn of the ring @@DavidHancock

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@flowermaze___ got it. So that's not readily compatible at aperture settings smaller than wide open because the LX can't close the aperture. So the solution to that, in the absence of an M/A switch, is going to be taping a small piece of thin, rigid plastic over the pin. That said, I honestly don't recommend that because if the tape gets loose, it or the plastic boy could damage your mirror or shutter. I have one lens like that and I glued a plastic piece over the pin. The drawback to that approach is that the lens will always stop down with the aperture ring. The benefit is that the lens will work with any adapter.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  11 месяцев назад +1

      This camera can't do program mode. If you set an SMC-A lens to A on this camera, it won't work correctly.

  • @randypipper92
    @randypipper92 11 месяцев назад

    So in automatic mode, when taking a double exp you're under exposing both photos by 1/2x the light? at first I thought you have to expose at 1x the light, and the second at 1/2x the light.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  11 месяцев назад +2

      Correct -- both should be a stop (1/2 the light) under. You can, BTW, mess with the ratios for fun. If you want a less-even double exposure, try one exposure at 2/3 and one at 1/3. The goal with these videos is to say here's a basic and proper method for results that will work. There are many variations on that process which can deliver different results and that are worth experimenting with.
