  • Peter Schneider and Terence McCormack Maitland go in-depth on the cart specially constructed to meet the challenges of recording posed by Steven Spielberg's upcoming film of WEST SIDE STORY. The set-up integrates Shure Axient wireless with an Allen & Heath SQ-5 console mixer and records to two Sound Devices 970s.
    Cart built by Tod Maitland, Terence McCormack Maitland, and Jerry Yuen.

    First time I've seen Shure mics used in this application. Great mics that deserve more attention.

    Excellent video, thanks for sharing such an impressive set up. It's like a Broadway Theatre on wheels.

    Well that was an easy 9 comments to get through.
    3:38 I would say on the time code the Crystal that is being used probably isn't compensated for temperature very well so turning that on gives the whole unit a few minutes to warm up and then stabilize.
    I used to live in or on a river depending on whether or not the water was high right next to a damn. so it is my theory that I have done a bit of research on that the micro vibrations were causing clock drift of a few seconds per week on a computer I was using to record TV. It also didn't help to have large temperature swings in that room that wasn't insulated at all.

    what box is the ADX1 (labeled boom 1) connected, I assume phantom power necessary for the TX on boom?

    I'm not into RGB and all that but there sure receivers just look awesome turning on at 5:00
    Static IP's or reserved addresses are a definite. I'm finding reserved addresses more useful as I'll get a consistent numbering even if I use a different router set to a different IP block and then if everything is hooked to the switch I can actually reboot the router without affecting my control network (XR18, iDevices, laptops and I recently added NDI ). I haven't done anything with Dante yet but I would suspect it would be similar coming from a Network background. I also heavily use speech to text which requires an Internet connection and all the devices these days freak out if there isn't an Internet connection so it's a win-win to do that and be able to look stuff up, I can tie into a local connection or a hotspot. and it's kind of required for live streaming.

    I would go with Yamaha CL console. You can actually remotely control the transmitter gain right from the channel strip if you need to.

      We looked at the QL-1 but the smaller size of the SQ5 won us over. The Yamaha CL and QL series have excellent integration with Shure (as do A+H dLive and Avantis) but there is no transmitter gain adjustment doesn't exist for Axient Digital. Receiver gain adjustment from the console's channel gain knob is seamless.

      @@PeterSchneider1Axient Digital transmitter gain does exist. I have used it. It has to be set up on the secondary ip. It is not part of the Dante stream. Not only does it control gain, but there are visuals on the console channel strip indicating battery level and more.

    Great video! So in terms of preamps, were they using the preamps from the console instead of something like a Sound Devices? Then they sent direct outs to their recorder? Not sure if I understood well. Interesting setup!

    • @fabiandietl7964
      @fabiandietl7964 3 года назад

      No they didn't. The signal comes out of the AD4Qs as hot as they want and gets fed directly into the Dante network, where the 970s pick it up. You can adjust the local gain (or you might as well call it trim) on either the 970s or the SQ5. But the physical preamps on the SQ5 would've only been used in case they went in the mixer through an analog input, which they didn't.

    Why is there a need for two 970s? Some scenes would actually go over 64 tracks?

      The second one is a back-up recorder, just in case something happens to the first.

    It’s not Dante that takes the time. It’s DHCP.
