I almost skipped this video because I was thinking of myself. “I’ve got this one down. It can’t be anything I can learn from it”. Boy was I wrong great info Matt. Sometimes you just have to humble yourself to realize you don’t know everything. Thanks for the great info.
I'd like to add that lure keepers/hangers placement can also lead to line damage. If you've got a treble hook lure that can move around while its hanging from the hook keeper, one of those treble hooks can nick your line
Great points. Never thought about salt damaging my line. I had a tendency to leave my plastics on my line when I stored it especially when I’m fishing a lot.
The one that gets me quite often is the Notorious wind knot or line twists. I learned many years ago as a teenager check your line for frays and retying my knots periodically when fishing. I fill my baitcaster full plus some when I change my line. One reason if I need to cut off a few inches it doesn’t affect efficiency of my reel. I change my line often it’s cheap insurance in my opion. Look at the price of some of the new hard baits and swim baits. Line maintenance is key. Thanks for putting out this video today.
It's important to store your line and reels with line on them in a safe place when you're not fishin. You don't want to leave them in a garage or shed near gas or other chemicals. The chemicals can weaken the line, discolor the line, and also the scent can get in the line and deter fish from biting. The sun is also bad for line, especially monofilament and probably fluoro. IDK about fluorocarbon because I don't use it. I recently ran into a new problem. My braided line cut a groove in the tip guide of my favorite rod. Your video about changing guides was very helpful and Bass Pro near me had the glue. I got a bunch of tip guides from Amazon. A buddy needed a couple so I gave them to him and he came up with a neat idea. He slid some heat shrink down the rod before putting the glue and tio on. Then he slid the heat shrink over the glue and joint and he heated it up. So his glue and the connection of rod and guide are all covered. It looks good.
I use a glass bead when Texas rigging a free bullet weight to protect the knot and add a little click when fishing. Great videos and information. I enjoy and learn from them all.
That happened to me last weekend. Such a bummer. I caught two decent ones and instead of reting I thought I'd cast back in cuz I was excited to catch another one. I'm pretty sure there was a wolf pack and the area I'm fishing. I'm normally catching three to 6 pounders at this spot. so I was excited to catch one that was bigger than the ones I was catching and I knew they had a good chance of it. Sure enough, I got a pretty good bite. Put slack in the line. Went to set the hook, slack line set and then snap instant. I figured it was either from the previous fish and or the bass had the soft plastic completely in its mouth and when I went to set the hook the line went across it bristles and cut it because that does happen, especially when the fish are are feeding primarily on shad. Their teeth seem to get a little sharper and the bigger the bass and the bigger the bristles good video. Thank you sir
I never thought about the ice, thanks Matt! How about a video (or two) about bass fishing gifts that will help make people a better angler? Tis the season!
27" strikes me as the length of line per turn of the *handle*. Spool is way smaller than that. 2(pi)r=circumference. 27/(2*(pi))= 4 to 4.5 radius which would be 8 to 9 inch diameter spool
Sorry for not being a sexy lady but I still think your videos are great 😂. I have a couple of other things that I check because I have seen them damage line and have lost fish pony because of a few of them, 1. Cheap weights, jigheads and terminal tackle. Cheap lead bullet weights are notoriously bad about having casting flash in the area of the hole which you would feed your line through and this can easily knock your line. Jigheads can have paint or epoxy that covers part of the lingerie and that can also cut your line, especially when tying a knot. My solution has been to purchase better quality terminal tackle that doesn’t have these issues or if need be I will smooth out imperfections before running line through them. 2. Line guides that have been damaged. These are pretty easy to find with a cotton ball but depending on your skill or pocketbook may not be as easy to deal with. I make sure not to hook lure hooks in the line guides themselves and use the hook hanger or at least the arms of the line guides instead of the guides. 3. The rod tip can form a crease in the line if you keep the line stored with a lure attached at the same distance for awhile.I don’t store lures very tightly and not for extended periods of time in order to avoid this. Hope this additional advice helps everyone
I saltwater fish, all rod/reels get rinsed well with freshwater after every trip. All lures are on the rod keeper, all lures with treble hooks get neoprene wraps for storage.
Ive thought about this alot and agree but after 20 + yrs of doing this its kinda hard to break the habit. You just kinda do it without thinking about it!
If there was salt on your line at one spot on the spool, it seems, when the line comes off, the salt spot would be about every 3-4 inches, not every 27 inches.
Not about the line, but your advice made me think about a couple jigs that I lost. I left the salted baits on the hook for weeks on end, and the head broke off on a retrieve! Could the salt on the bait corroded the hook or head that much?
I was wondering if you have heard of zappu it's a Japanese company thats makes all kinds of little things for fishing but they make a bobber stop style round cushion that goes in between you hook a tungsten weight
I guess I've been pretty ignorant about the whole salt thing. The hangers on my rod have corroded and the spot where the hook leaves my soft plastics is also corroded. I actually looked at it and thought, what is that from?...duh

Yep
You know I have noticed if I drag my line around the parking lot when launching it seems to
mess things up. It might just me?
Hahahah
Great points. Never thought about salt damaging my line. I had a tendency to leave my plastics on my line when I stored it especially when I’m fishing a lot.
It’s rough on everything
Nice video as always. Glad to see you coming over to the Lions side after that whipping they gave Green Bay. Really colorful sweatshirt!!!
hahaha

Agreed
Good advice. I hadn’t thought of some of those. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great informative video!! Thanks for those helpful tips & reminders on what to check on. Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍

Great tips Matt thank you sir. Usually do a quick check on my rod, line and my bait and make sure the knot is tied right 👍🏻
Good stuff!
Is there anything we can put on the guides to stop them from icing up? This is something I’ve thought about come late fall early winter.

Great, Great Info!!!!!!!!. Thx, Matt!
Glad it was helpful!
This all makes a lot of sense, thanks Matt.
You bet!
Good information I never thought about the rod locker locks 👍
Glad to help
Thank you . I am bad about tying knots dry
Stop it haha!
😊
I never thought about the ice, thanks Matt! How about a video (or two) about bass fishing gifts that will help make people a better angler? Tis the season!
I will be doing some

A 1.5" spool would have a circumference of 4.5" to 5"
Your right
Good tip. Thanks, Matt.
You bet!
Thanks.
You're welcome

Good advice!
Good show today. Can you please do a show on vertical vs. horizontal line ties? I'm getting weird on that and wondering your thoughts. Thanks
Great suggestion!

Good topic. Very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
I've had hoo's rust completely in till it just broke down. No more soft plastic on the hock's
Bummer

Understood

Your right i was thinking reel handle turn
Good things to think about!

I've had that same thing happen to me. Rust builds up on the hook shank and breaks
100%
great info thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I was wondering if you have heard of zappu it's a Japanese company thats makes all kinds of little things for fishing but they make a bobber stop style round cushion that goes in between you hook a tungsten weight
I know of them but not that product
I lost some lures and fish from cracked guides! I do like these other pointers that I have not considered before.
Bummer
I only caught on about the salty baits rusting my hooks this year. I have to give in to being old and slooow.
I can't tell you the amount of drop shot weights I lost due to tying a knot without lubricating it. Really expensive lesson learned.
Bummer
Good tips 👍
Glad you think so!
Thanks Matt When is the NEW boat coming ?
any day now id think
Nice info 👌🏻 🍻🍻🍻
Thanks 👍

Salt!
haven't watched the vid yet (football on ) but I know those tube baits will sure corrode a hook
Yep
haha, I've learned some of those the hard way.
Me too
Another way to damage your line is to pull too hard when trying to free a lure that’s hung on something.
Agreed
👍👍👍👍👍
