I grew up on the west coast and have seldom accessed ACW battlegrounds but now I'm living in Texas and last year I got to visit Vicksburg while coming and going to Florida - I was blown away !!! and I want to recommend the Civil War Museum in town, the owner/curator is a really dedicated and inspiring guy.
Great episode. I´ve never been to the battlefield in winter, interesting to see vantage points without tree cover. I also did not know he is buried in Hagerstown. Next time I´m down that way I will visit his grave.
Col. Isaac Avery was my 3xGreat Uncle. My grandfather was Col. Clark Moulton Avery. Of note, and relevant to Ike’s story, a brother-in-law of the Avery brothers was Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson by their brother Alphonso Avery’s marriage to Susan Morrison-a younger sister of Mary Anna Morrison, Stonewall Jackson’s wife.
Thank you for sharing your family history. As I study the Civil War I am pleasantly surprised to learn how strong my Southern brothers and sisters keep the memory of their Civil War ancestors alive. I wish you and your family the best
I’m sorry you cannot have any empathy for someone who was killed so young in life. I feel sorry for all those who died as a result of this and every war. The man died defending his belief that the state’s reigned supreme. I shall keep folks like you in my prayers that you can find it in your heart to at least respect those who died in our Civil War

I've since Avery note to his father. It's in the North Carolina museum of history. It still has his blood on it.
Sorry for the delay. I do hope that the state of North Carolina will keep this incredible piece of history safe for future generations
Its actually in the State Archives and is kept in a vault there.

Commandeering or confiscating, not 'stealing'.......*
Excellent point
Well he was the enemy.
