Civil War Reports #54: Lee's Proclamation to the People of Maryland
Hello Folks. In today's episode we will be going back to the Monocacy Battlefield near Frederick, Maryland to look at Lee's Proclamation to the People of Maryland. Written on September 8, 1862, during his first invasion of the North, Lee appealed to the citizens of this border state in an effort to try to win them over to the Southern cause.
I will take you to various spots on the battlefield as I read the Proclamation to you. I offer an editorial at the end of the episode.

HAPPY EASTER. THIS EPISODE WAS FILMED ON EASTER SUNDAY 2024. First, I want to thank the person who commented on Episode 40 stating if Slocum was part of the overall commanders on July 1, 1863. Thank You, your comment became the basis for this episode. I do admit that I got a little emotional because I could not believe Slocum's actions on July 1, 1863. I admit I expected better from a Wing Comm...

Civil War Reports, Episode 27, Pt 2. A visit to the Grant Cottage, Mt. McGregor, NY
Sorry to hear that wish you well you have a precocious daughter very cleaver and well spoken good job of parenting
Thank you so much!
The union army having the high ground, scouts would have immediately spotted hoods division on a long flanking March. With only 1 division, they would have got slaughtered or captured by union reinforcements from the union right flank, northern tip of the fish hook.
I've heard both arguments extensively and both make some good points, my personal conclusion is if slavery didn't exist, differences would probably have been resolved peacefully. Just my take. Good video and get well.
Not to start a debate here but: habeas corpus, along with the entire US constitution was also suspended/replaced by the CSA (7-11 states) with a new constitution of their own after the Ordinance of Session around December 1860-june 1861 (which was in its core about slavery, not State's rights but the right of a State to keep slavery for their economy) You probably mistakenly believe in the South's version of the war: 'the lost cause' . Lee writes; 'deprived of every right' - just like a slave person in the South?- Even George Washington realized he could not work his land with the free labor of slavery so at some point it had to come to this. Not easy letting go of your paradigms...good luck with your health!
Very good report sir! Wishing you continued strength in your health battle. Do you have a website or facebook page?
First of all Mr. Kopec I wish you good health. Definitely some deep thoughts in this episode. Thanks for anything you can do about the 1862 Maryland invasion. I am studying it as much as possible since my daughter lives nearby and I have been visiting many of the sites. Incidentally an excellent book on the subject I just finished reading is ¨I dread the thought of the place¨ by D. Scott Hartwig.
I will check out that book. As I mentioned in this video, next will be about Lee evacuation of the Frederick Maryland area, and hopefully get into battle of south mountain. That may be more than one episode the battle and needless to say, Antietam will be several episodes. When I get to Antietam, I’m sure I will parse the battle and do an episode for each major set of fighting
I would like to ask you to take a look at CSA Gen.Bushrod Johnson, and story of Holt Collier .and what happened at Shiver house at Union Mills Md ( divided family with special Twist) Thank you and all you do ! Truth should never be silenced .
Thank you for the suggestion I will certainly look into it. Not sure exactly when I will be able to get around to that, but it sounds like a story that definitely needs to be told.
I am praying and wishing you well !
Thank you so much!
Thank you very much
Done well, thank you!~!!
Welcome!
Great episode indeed. Would be interesting to share your thoughts in a future episode why Cashtown/Gettysburg area was chosen by Lee in the first place to concentrate as an army when it was perhaps easier for the 3 corps to travel separately, avoiding a battle by moving away and still be shielded by the mountains on the Chambersburg/Carlisle/Hagerstown road with all the carts with bounty moving south. Lee knew from Harris that part of the Union army was at Frederick. Perhaps a miscalculation thinking he would have more time to concentrate and occupy the high ground at Gettysburg, Antietam was also a surprise battle for Lee without having his whole army but he still fought. Is avoiding the battle at Gettysburg on June 30th not believing Pettigrew because of Lee’s army being spread out and again the attack on July first with Rhodes holding back the wrong lesson learned?
Great idea for an episode. I’m going to start to look into this
Excellent video very glad to have found your channel
Welcome aboard!
Thank you Mr. Kopec. I appreciate you and learn something every episode. I look forward to the next one.
You are very welcome
I happen to have his signature and info in an original POW autograph book. Good video
be there with my unit October 5th and 6th for a living history at the Pennsylvania monument the 124th N.Y. Co B. the 124th fought at the triangular field
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Interesting report. I did an extensive tour of Gettysburg from July 1 through July 4, 1995, focusing on photographs taken after the battle and taking photos of those exact places. It was fun. My last owned GM product was a 4x4 Crew Cab, 2007 Sierra Pickup. It was my last GM product. GM stole stock from the stock holders. You're probably aware that there are 2 types of stocks. My aunt lost all her $250,000 worth of GM stock she had inherited from her father. He went to work for GM in 1913. My sister had $200,000 worth of her GM stock confiscated in the 2008 GM crisis. She had 30 years of service at Buick in Flint. All of this happened under Obama. I interned under the criminal Governor Jimmy Carter in 1974 doing a study on Nuclear Power Safety. Hahaha 🤣. Half the information was taken out of the study. Oh, the study disappeared and does not appear in the Carter library files. Carter had Georgia over sprayed with fire ant poison by airplanes. I thought I was in the Republic of Vietnam being sprayed with Agent Orange again. Carter became Presidet and why did theThree Mile-Island accident happen? Carter pardoned all the Vietnam drafted dodgers, including his son Chip, and then resigned the Selective Service Act law requiring all men to register for the draft. Carter was a hypocrite! When I interned under Carter. I was sent to Americus, Georgia to visit the commune, Habitat for Humanity. Carter liked communes like Koinonia farms.
I was just there from September 8th through September 12th the weather was perfect and I learned so much.
I was just there the 7th and 8th and enjoyed those views. Obviously making some of the areas difficult to access to keep down the wear and tear. Best of luck with your health and please keep the episodes coming. Doesn´t surprise me about no reply to your question.
If you are referring to the questions, you posed about Dave’s attack on July 1 more specifically about General Davis himself. I am working on looking up the answers to those questions and plan to answer them at the start of my next video, which will be on the noon time lolon July 1, 1863. Thank you for the questions and your comments.
Sorry I missed you on the battlefield. I drove through the battlefield over that weekend and decided to wait till Monday to do the filming. Again look forward to my next video as I’ve already written into the script, the reply to most of your questions that you asked previously, still working on trying to get some more answers for you, which proving to be a little more difficult than I thought
@@civilwarreports5665 You are fine. I was referring to your letters to the candidates about the monuments. It doesn´t surprise me you got no reply because it is a controversial subject and they won´t stick their neck out, at least yet.
@@civilwarreports5665 I spent the last 2 days at the Antietam anniversary. Hopefully someday you could do more episodes about the Maryland campaign.
I'll be there next tues. Go once every year. Study a part of battle then go up and walk the area. Culps hill is my focus this year. Will stop by Little round top to see the improvements.
Wright's brigade of Georgians did break through the yankee line on july 2. No doubt. Had to withdraw over that blood soaked ground due to their lack of support being beatin back or failing to come up. What could have been..what could have been. If only General Jackson was still with us on that day. Long Live The Confederacy!
Destroy the monuments or put in a museum! You are now black and can not feel the insult of those monuments!! History can be taught!! Markers is one thing .. monuments are glorification!
Thanks for the history lesson.
Thank you very much
Hood's idea even with two more divisions would have most likely failed. Longstreet had it right and it baffels me that Lee didn't do what he did in the past... withdraw to a good defensive location. Lee had this battle entirely wrong. Granted with all fairness, he didn't know everything hes was facing... Jeb Stuart was missing.
How many union troops would he have run into. I think thadt is the key
The main mistake made by General Lee was in attacking at all on July 2nd. Longstreet's Corp with Pickett's division did not arrive until the night of July 2nd-3rd. Stewart's calvary did not arrive until the same night and with completely exhausted horses and cavalrymen. Battle plans and overall strategy should have been discussed on July 3rd, getting into position for the attack made the night of the 3rd - 4th, and the attack carried out on the 4th. And, it's entirely possible that, by then, a decision to move around to the south of the Union army thereby forcing the Union to attack would have happened.
So much of our opinions come from the movie, which telescopes the Longstreet-Hood conversations into 1 hour. Actually, Hoods idea was worthy (still would have failed...) if he had started out in the morning, and been coordinated with other attacks. As a lone wolf moving around at the start of the fighting would have left him in the air. Remember, the Confederate Generals had no idea of Union troop strength. Maybe in the morning, but right before the fighting - I doubt it.
Interesting different episode. I stopped in Lexington a few years ago on my way to North Carolina to visit the graves. I had no idea Traveller was buried just outside Lee´s grave. I didn´t have much time so I hope to go back and see Little Sorrel.
Please do
My daughter just loved horses in asking if I could do some thing on my channel about horses. The horse to the beginning is a friend of mine course. I’ve known her since 1998 and she was more than happy to volunteer or one of her horses for the intro
Hi CWR I believe I read that Davis only got the job because of his relation to Jefferson Davis. He was unqualified and not respected. Correct or not?
Confederate General Archer was captured that day along with most of his brigade. Funny story about Archer being brought back to see General Doubleday after his capture, (who was a prewar acquaintance). Doubleday greeted him, saying, “Good morning Archer! How are you? I am glad to see you!” To this Archer responded, “Well, I am not glad to see you by a damn sight!” I hope your back is better Sir. Thanks for producing these videos. Someday, I may make it to Gettysburg.
Thank you for your nice comments. I did do an episode a while back on archers brigade. As for my back well I threw that out a few years ago working and of course the company I work for claims it wasn’t their responsibility. Just something that flares up every now and again luckily for the most part Advil usually comes to my rescue.
If People don't like the names , 1st are you from that area , meaning born and raised . and if you are not from that area then you need to respect the people, culture of that area ! If your from Ohio and you Move to VA and don't like the history or culture then simple don't move to VA ! In todays world things are out of wack but if this game they all want to play fine then no School or State or Federal Building should be named after anyone , don't care who they are what they done all must go ! Replace all street Buildings with numbers and Colors ! That settles the matter ! And when I say No Building OR Street or highway named after anyone i mean No Lee or Jackson etc ,But that goes for H .Tubman , No MLK all must go ! The Truth is if you take time and learn you realize no historical person is perfect , H.Tubman was anti- Chinese supported the Anti Chinese acts ! tell me thats someone we should honor ! Take moment and Look Up and read on , Gen Bushrod Johnson and then afterwards ponder on it !
Good, the purging of names had nothing to do with history or the Confederacy. It was an overreaction and show of force by the woke and progressives. The campaign started in the South and quickly moved from Confederate monuments to George Washington and Christopher Columbus to even questioning the validity of holidays such as Thanksgiving and even July 4th.
wow im notsure thats a good thing. enjoy your reporting none the less.
and what is it that makes you say . its not good thing ?
Thank you for being unafraid to speak out about the wholesale attacks against the entirety of our American History. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end for the woke agendas attack on anything related to factual history especially as it relates to southern heritage
You’re welcome. I will continue to report about the loss of monuments that depict American history
Great news about the high school. I´m surprised VMI caved to the woke but as you said at least the statues weren´t destroyed.
Nice video. It seems to me Lee also wanted his left to attack Culps Hill. If that attack on Culps Hill had happened at 4pm, the attack as it happened could very well have succeeded. Going around big round top and also using some of the other Corp in the center would also have worked. But if the left attacks at 8pm as it had done, nothing could have saved Longstreet in my opinion. But who knows. BTW, my opinion is that all of this was the fault of Meade as he didn’t take care of Sickles because he let his personal feelings get in the way.
It would have been just as disastrous. There was a Federal Signals post on Little Round Top, every move the Confederates made was visible and would've been slaughtered. This "move to the right" has been wargamed extensively. Always ends in failure.
dumb what ifs....not even.
If Hood got his way he would’ve slammed face-first into the 6th Corp which nobody could see and THEN what was he gonna do???
Hood would have been outnumbered by Union 5th and 6th corps. Twelfth Corps would have supported Cemetery Hill and Caldwells division would stayed to support 3rd (probably half the 5th likely would have also). In the ened, it made no difference. You can play this out on the other end of the line at Culps Hill 'what if' the confed went around to the rear? Same Same because the Union had the benefit of shorter lines, the Conf the disadvantage of Longer lines.
Thanks for covering this. This is one of the battles I know nothing about even though I have been close to there.
For some reason, I really enjoy reading about this battle, even though there is not much written about it
Now I want to visit the Shenandoah Valley
I love the Shenandoah
👍
Time can be an army's enemy. The longer any side waits or delays action gives the other side time to gather more resources, bring in more reinforcements , etc...
My great grandfather was with the 55th N.C. OUT OF FRANKLIN COUNTY N.C. AND HE WAS WOUNDED AND CAPTURED IN THE RAILROAD CUT! GREAT STORY THANKS FOR THE FACTS OF THAT DAY!
You are very welcome. Always glad to hear from a descendant of a CSA soldier
Given the disposition of Union forces on July 2nd, even with Sickles decision to move out of line, Hood likely wouldn't have reached the supply wagons. His Division would have been spotted coming around Big Round Too, and scattered.
Just found your channel good job 👍
Why would the town be the objective? The CSA already was there. But more importantly, the entire 6th Corps was right behind the round tops...... fresh troops and 12K strong. No chance for Hood.
A lot of people sent Jackson fruit.
this was great - more about Stonewall Jackson ! more more
Your wish is my command. As I mentioned my favorite Confederate General was Stonewall. I am very grateful to Major Moyer of VMI for making this episode possible
I love your channel , Your fair and tell as is and not try to put today world in the Civil war ,I am from what was a Union divided state , But sad to see the attack and attempt to erase History ! One day when you able to I would love to offer you a chance of me interview you on my RUclips channel . Keep up the good work .
I'd be happy to discuss my views on the Civil War. Let me know if you are ever in the Gettysburg area some weekend.
Awesome reporting, this was so informative I enjoyed it immensely please keep this coming. Thank you so much. I t was like I drove there and took a tour myself. I cannot wait for the next one to drop, you truly topped yourself with this visit. Thank you again and keep them coming.
Thank you very much. I really enjoyed doing this episode
