Synology NAS Tip - How to add The Movie Database plug-in to Video Station

With the introduction of Disk Station Manager 7, Video Station will no longer automatically pull content poster art and meta data. Instead you now need to create an API and add it to a Video Station plugin. So in this video, we you walk through the step for adding The Movie Database API into Video Station.
As Video Station will not automatically update its existing content, we also demonstrate a method that will allow you to quickly add meta data to existing content in Video Station.

YOU CAN INDEX ALL FILES VIA VIDEO STATION SETTINGS.
VIDEOSTATIO>SETTINGS>LIBRARY
1: SELECT THE FOLDER WITH YOUR FILES YOU WANT TO GET THE META DATA FOR.
2: FIND THE BUTTON ALONG THE TOP THAT SAYS ''SEARCH ALL VIDEO INFO AGAIN.'(HOVER OVER THE BUTTONS FOR DECRIPTIONS)
it will take some time if you have a lot of files.
WARNING TO THOSE WHO HAVE FILES WITH WRONG DESCRIPTIONS, SAY FOR INSTANCE TV SHOWS, ONE SEASON MAY COME UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME. THATS WHEN YOU FOLLOW THE VIDEO STEPS TO INDEVIDUALLY CHANGE THE DATA.

I managed to index all my files relatively quickly by moving the folder and then moving it back. Worked a treat!

Seems like a lot of hard work for something that video station should do by itself.
True, hopefully Synology will reintroduce the function soon.
Would be nice but there can be ambiguous titles - especially if a film is a remake (i.e. is Nosferatu the 1922 version or the 1979 version with the title Nosferatu the Vampyr - there is even a new film in post-production so...). But yes, it would be nice if it had a "best guess" and we could go and edit if it turned out to be the wrong one.
How the file name is constructed will help Video Station better guess the correct meta data for the file. So using your example, by titling one film Nosferatu the Vampyr (1922).mpv and the other file Nosferatu the Vampyr (1979).mpv
Video Station should be able to add the correct meta data to your files. However, if Video Station still has problems I like to refer to The Movie DataBase (TMDB) to make sure my title matches their title for a film. Some films have different international titles ie Zootopia was called Zootropolis in the UK

How long does it take to index? The connection status is successful, file name is as recommended, but an hour has passed and indexing is still in progress. For the test, I indicated a folder where there are only 12 films
None of my TV series are having the video info downloaded. Works fine for movies. Any idea why this is happening?

I have in my network 4 Synologys, three running DSM 6 and a new one that installed DSM 7.
I can log onto the 3 running DSM 6 from 2 Windows 7 PCs & 2 Windows 10 PCs.
I can log onto the new DSM 7 Synology from both Windows 7 PCs, as well as various tablets.
But have been unable to log onto the DSM 7 Synology from either Windows 10 machines. Keeps saying password is wrong.
SMB is properly enabled on all 4 Synologys.
Any idea why I can't log onto the DSM 7 Synology from Windows 10?

every time i update movie informations, 2 days later everything is gone, lot of work for nothing. Since DSM7 it's a mess, i can't organize my library
I have upgraded or installed a couple of instances of DSM7 so far. However I have not yet come across the problem you describe. So I'm not sure if I can be of much help.
Just out of curiosity, when you update the meta data to a file, is it creating a .vsmeta file in the folder where your video file is stored?
At my Video Station/DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4, the option "Search from video info plugin" doesn't exist...what can I do? All my API is verified and correct connection.
Just updated to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4, and the Search for video info plugin worked without issue for me.
In a previous update last November, my VPN server stopped accepting connections. Which I think had something to do with a similar update.
The only way I was able to fix the problem was by uninstalling and re-installing VPN server. So you might need to do the same to fix your problem.
Just remember to screen shot all your settings before you start to make re-setting up Video Station easier.

I am trying to do this for months, and the connexion test always fails. I tried today again, following exactly what you did, and it's still not working... Any idea why?
Just out of curiously are you running DSM7, and were you part of the beta program?
I just checked both NAS devices that I configured to use the TMDB API, and both are working fine.
For your reference, one is running the latest version of DSM6 while the other is running DSM7 - the one I screen captured for the video.
While you may had tried this already, I would suggest trying to isolate were the problem is by first testing your API. I think you can do this by:
1. Log into your TMDB account
2. Choose Settings - API
3. Copy the text in API Example Request
4. Paste the text into your browser's address bar and press enter on your keyboard
5. If your API is working correctly, you should see meta data relating to Fight Club.
I would guess that if a result is returned, the issue is not with your TMDB API, but something to do with your NAS.
It then becomes a process of elimination, so perhaps check your firewalls, and if that does not work possible reinstall Video Station.
@@mydoodads Thank you for your detailed answer. I tried all that, and nothing worked unfortunatly. I tried on DSM6 and on 7 after i updated. More and more functions of the nas stoped working little by little. My only guess so far is that i live in China and there are more and more restrictions on the network. It will hopefully change the day i ll leave the country. Thanks again for your answer, and for your videos, which helped me a lot when i set-up my nas a couple years ago😀
@@r-one9172 This is probably a VideoStation issue, I live in Europe and the API verifies correctly on the key screen but connection fails on the plugin list. There is no rhyme or reason, just Synology being Synology. Forget VideoStation.
I really wonder why would they need my home address (not network) and my phone number for a video info search? This is ridiculous. Every damn thing these days wants insane amounts of personal information and access to your devices to operate.

you need a fixed IP? that's gonna be a problem
Welcome to the club. In Germany, DSL does not have a fixed IP address. Only cable internet has a fixed IP address.
@@FamilyDeflan In here same, even cable can change IP without warning if the ISP decides it so (config changes)
