Make a hyperbolic paraboloid of sticks

- The beautiful "hyperbolic paraboloid" fascinates mathematicians and has inspired architects and engineers. Get a feel for the structure with this stick and rubber band model. Used wooden dowel rods attached with tiny rubber bands (hair elastics).
Mathematicians are interested in the hyperbolic paraboloid for several reasons. It has a "saddle surface" with a "doubly ruled surface" meaning you can line up straight sticks across one edge to another and also line up straight sticks across in the perpendicular direction and they all lie on this surface. As in any ruled surface, a line can be drawn through any point and the entire line stays on the surface.
A few famous buildings use this design in their roofs. Such architecture distributes stress evenly and has an elegant appearance.

I don't understand what this is or what you did or how you did it, but you definitely did it and that's what counts.

@@bitonic589 Or maybe I'm just not an arts and crafts guy, so I watched someone make a cool shape and understand nothing of the physics or psychology behind it. Maybe that.
@@GD0nly what the hell
how much days of school did you skip
@@GD0nly this has nothing to do with psychology
@@bitonic589 The psychology is the me not understanding it part. You can't even follow a conversation and you're worried about me skipping school?
u can also try the orgami and it includes, u dont need to cut and u can do them by a single sheet of paper
Yes, we did one here: ruclips.net/video/-X5fU0thxX4/видео.htmlsi=ti0nKfkskuxrUek9
So Pringles are made like that for their strength and so one sits in the other. Bloody clever when you think about it because you rarely see a tube of broken Pringles.
I love the goofy music
hurts the brain and pleases the mind

always nice to hear some holst
Mercury! and a wind band version of it too! My fave arrangement.
Simply awesome 😊
Wonderful
thanks!
That springy movement at 0:28 is so silly!

Bro that's just pringle💀
Stretchy pringle.
thats one of the slower renditions of mercury i've heard
I don't think I actually used my brain while watching this video. I think that's a compliment?
Is this how the Americans make "Jumbo Lays Chip"
Please do a tutorial
You… just saw the tutorial… slow it down maybe and watch it again…

Is this same as the envelope figure ?

i got this right under "AYO YOU STILL GOT THE STICK IN THERE"
anybody else thinking of pringles?
Plsss do a tutorial
Slow it down. There's your tutorial
Such a jolly song on the background, it makes me laugh when you wooble the structure, too silly

I hope this video doesn't get relegated to YT Kids just because it has "kids" in the tags.
Bro why is this goofy song in the background in a similar time signature to the Oppenheimer theme
girl its 6/8
@@silhouetta6983 upon closer inspection, the time signature is not the same. It was just similar with the alternating rhythm that sounded like it was going back and forth
@@Kids_Scissors ohhh i see what you mean! Yeah, it does flip between a 6/8 feel and a 3/4 feel with the notes being grouped in 3s vs 2s. The word for that is hemiola! If you're wondering, this piece is "Mercury" from The Planets by Hoslt! You may have heard Mars or Jupiter. A lot of movie scores (specifically John Williams) are known to take inspiration from Holst, interestingly enough!
"just follow along with the timelapse"
