If it's not broken, don't fix it. Liturgy is not about us. It's about God. Liturgy is not entertainment. Great answers.

Well said, Fathers. Greeting to all our Coptic brothers, from the Armenian church! We hold exact same views!

The Church hymns are surely (part of) today's needs. Therefore these should change our minds, and not our minds change the hymns. The prayers of the Church are part of who we are, and what we are called to strive for.

Thank you Abounas again! 🙏Orthodoxy is beautiful! The inside of the church shouldn’t feel like the rest of the world outside of it. God is present in the world and in the church but church is a holy place. ✝️

Greetings from the Ethiopian Orthodox church :-). I have noticed that many things in life, even things that were created to entertain, aren't fulfilling and make me feel as if I was wasting my time on some useless topic, but studying the law and understanding Christian teachings never fails to bring contentment to me and your videos are a safe place for me to retreat from the world. Thank you very much and please continue to make these videos and podcasts.

In orthodox liturgy; no instrument 🎸🎷 used because we need oir body, mind and soul to work together to praise, worship and pray to the Lord.

Such a good point. The ancient Romans and Greeks etc. had very entertaining music. People think liturgy is just old fashioned.

A guy from Ghana walked into my orthodox church in Australia ,thinking it was an anglican church (we didnt remove the earlier sign ,..so not his "fault")..after the service he said.." I felt somewhere else, it felt like home".

Wonderful video. To the point about language.. we cannot fully understand what we are praying in without knowing the Coptic as these are the most precise words our Fathers used to express these Truths. Also, it is said for me to understand, although I believe the deeper route of this discussion is the fact that we don’t feel or acknowledge the presence of God if I don’t understand intellectually. This is what I believe has to be addressed. It should be a balance.

The Church is NOT a place for entertainment. It's a place of worship of God, not to get something but to give. I come from a protestant background but am now Orthodox. Too much in non-Orthodox services is about emotion and how you feel. Music is used to cause an emotional response in us, rather than focusing on the Lord Whose great love for us alone should bring about that response.

Very well explained! Orthodoxy is to be celebrated for what it is... Liturgical prayers & Worship from Church fathers' ages have been handed down with sole focus on TriUne God 💖💖💖 ; other methods of 'praise &worship' are in the core practice just meant to entertain us & themselves...there are better ways to "feel good" rather!

Thank you Abouna’s. I think though the liturgy, we receive our Spirit in the traditional way. That our personality has a synergy with the Holy Spirit, so our will has the synergy with God’s will. The Coptic Church has it’s role in performing this with its knowledge and is intimate in this relationship. It does not seem fit to integrate that which has separated from us as this would effect the identity. The world is having identity problems and not safe for us to follow.

I have a different opinion from the very last sentence of this video. First the formal liturgical prayers are set as the fulcrum of praise and how it forms our lives outside the formal liturgical setting. And I say FORMAL in the sense that outside this, the liturgy doesn’t end, but our informal lives also must be liturgical in some sense.
When we partake of the Eucharist, our Eucharistic lives doesn’t end there.
So I have a problem in calling praise “just praise” or “mere praise.” Praise should also be VENERABLE. If we used to discern what music is good for veneration and what music is merely entertainment, then “praise and worship” should be part of an informal liturgical lifestyle, where not any music, where we carelessly bring in guitars and entertain youth. If, and I’m sorry to say this to be blunt, if we want to entertain our youth, send them to an informal Protestant church.
But if we want to continue to live Eucharistic and liturgical lives outside formal liturgical services, then even youth meetings should have something venerable, and we must weed out that which is not Orthodox in origin. This is not a “feel good kumbaya yoga” musical, this is Orthodoxy, and our praxis does not end in formal liturgical services.
Forgive me fathers I have sinned.

Today's spiritual needs are the same as they were 2,000 years ago. Liturgy and religion are not fashion contests. We don't need to guess what would happen if we adapted and modernized music and chants to the "modern era." We can see it in Protestant churches. They are an insult to holiness. We (Roman Catholics) have had to change churches twice because of this. The moment a guitar enters the church, we walk out.DO NOT change liturgy and tradition. In Catholicism, we are fighting hard against the banalization of Our Lord's Sacrifice. Very well said, Father: The Liturgy is not there to entertain you, it is not about you. By the way, the "modern era" has NOTHING to offer in music, or art. Just compare music 100 years ago and you will see the decline. Young people are turning to the Church because of tradition and ancient rituals, not because rock concerts dedicated to Jesus. Traditional Latin Mass is getting more popular by the day in the US.

I think even though liturgy is the uppermost worship ... hymns are also worahip ... no need to use musical instruments for entertainment ... better watch out what you said .... if we did not protect evwry worship from this world items our liturgy at end will be in danger ...
