May I Suggest a pretty cool way of also doing it??? Keep the original cutout of the player and just add another "Layer Mask" so instead of painting on top with the background color or even erasing the picture, you can go back and forth adding or taking from the mask without messing with the picture itself. So you would have - Layer 1 Background color, Layer 2 - Person with Liquify, Layer 3 - Person with simple mask.
Instead of going to fill colour and black u could just press alt and press the layer mask icon to make the layer mask blak or after putting the layer mask u select the layer mask and press ctrl-i My Instagram~ @mpmdsgn

Hit select at the top then hit subject. it will mask it our for you and its generally pretty accurate
