Topher Bec -- They only finished 3 F-20s in total; they started on a fourth F-20 but it was scrapped when the program ended. Two of them crashed, 1 survived and is in a museum. The last time an F-20 flew was probably back before the end of 1986 when they cancelled the program. The big visual differences between the F-20 and F-5 are A) most noticeably, the single engine on the F-20 which is the same basic engine (GE F404) used on the F-18A-D Hornet and B) the flatter, broader profile of the F-20 nose (which is where the plane gets its name) is less needle-like than the F-5 nose. Later production F-5E's and some earlier production F-5E's were retrofitted with F-20 type noses because it was found that type of nose improved airflow around the airframe and increased the aircraft's maneuverability under certain conditions.

Nice build, but that is not a F20 Tigershark. Only 3 of them were built all single seat fighters, I ought to know, I built them when I worked for Northrop. It looks like a bastardized F5E Tiger with a single engine. You did a nice job but Freedom is playing fast and loose with the kit!
Shalako Jones Hello. I know that there was 3 F-20's build. The painting and markings on this one are "what if.." as these markings are real VFC-111 F-5 Sundownes
Shalako, I'd guess you'd know about that plane, then! (That was meant as a joke...) I've felt for a while that the F-20 was one of the prettier fighter planes that never went into production. I'd go so far as to say it was a better-looking plane than even the F-5 or T-38. The F-5 is still an elegant-looking little beast if not a bit on the cute side for a fighter! (And I can't believe I just wrote that about an inanimate piece of metal!) I never heard of or saw plans for an F-20B (probably the model designation for a two-seater/trainer) but I think had the F-20 gone into a decent production program (at least 350 planes) your company would have eventually had to fabricate a two-seat version. I understand it was an economy measure to NOT build a two-seater F-20 at the beginning. After all, Northrop invested $2billion of its own cash into the F-20 project (NO GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY!!!) and it was a substantial write-off in the end. Heh -- and you catch glimpses of F-20 ideas and techniques years later in rebuilds of F-5s (later F-5s have flat "Tigershark" noses allegedly for better agility at high angle of attack) and some of the NEW jet trainers that have materialized in the last 10-15 years! I know the F-20 radar (APG-67?) was used in later aircraft projects and that the F404 engine has probably become the most ubiquitous "light engine"/J79 replacement in-service. The X-29, F-117, and KAI T-50 Golden Eagle all used that engine, too! Whether the canopy situation would have been separate pieces/separate canopies for the aircrew in the F-20B (like the existing F-5B/F) OR a long, single shared canopy for BOTH aircrew (like they had for ALL the two-seater Teen Fighters) is something we'll never know. Something that people miss is that the two-seat F-5's had fuselage extensions (they were longer than the single-seat F-5s) to accommodate both pilots INSTEAD of cutting back on a fuel tank and fitting the second seat into the plane like they did on the later F-16 and F-18 trainers that also have also the bumped-up, canopies that are longer than the single seater canopies. The F-20 had its good points and bad points. One things, for sure... I think the USAF is wondering if it waited too long to procure a replacement trainer for the T-38. They can't keep those jets going forever. I think they've had at least two rebuilds. Had they gone ahead with something like an F-5G/F-20A, who knows, maybe that would have been the basis for a new trainer! That's how the whole T-38 story began. It WAS essentially the two-seat version of the F-5 as it was planned. They shared the same design/model number within Northrop: N-156F for the F-5, N-156T for the T-38. Other than the LERX unique to the F-5's wings, the T-38 was practically identical in most respects to the F-5B (itself a trainer)! The F-5 was supposed to be built first but got deferred a few years because the USAF didn't want a plane that small, that simple.
I love these videos but for God's sake please dont speed up the video. Better to show 5-10 seconds of each part than speed up. We are not flies, the brain doesnt process sped up videos.
