  • This is a video of Birdwatching at the feeders at the Beacon Fell visitor centre.
It is a Sunday in late July, and we are just at the start of the summer holidays in England.
We are at the Beacon Fell visitor centre - a country park near Preston in the North-West of England. There actually a couple of Beacon Fells in the area, the one we are at is at Carwags Lane, Preston.
We’ve driven up to the visitor centre and the café and are in the bird watching area near the café itself.
There are all manner of birds that are flitting about between the feeders. It tricky to pick one bird species ahead of the others, but here goes.
The Nuthatch is somewhat fleeting sighting here, definitely a “blink and you’ll miss it” type of bird - the Nuthatch can fairly be described a Britain’s miniature woodpecker.
Here it made racing visits to the feeders taking the chance to dive in and out of the feeders and the water trays very quickly.
Goldfinch could also be seen here as they fly in to feed off the ground. The smaller juvenile Goldfinch could be tricky to spot if they landed in the vegetation itself.
Great Tits were seen for long periods on the feeders. Being agile little birds, they were happy to hang on the feeders and to go inside the cages - even in the presence of other species.
There looked to be several families of Great Tits here today.
The Chaffinch is one of the gardener’s most seen birds, and this was here too. They were happier to feed on the ground rather than use the feeders and they did visit the water trays too.
In this image, you can clearly spot the bright and the drab colour differences between the sexes.
The males are much more colourful.
The Redpoll is a fascinating little bird. It is an uncommon visitor to most people’s gardens.
The Redpoll has a distinctive red-colored “Mohican” strip along the top of the head. It was quite happy to use the cages round the feeders and share them with Siskin and other species.
The Siskin is another fascinating bird which remains rare in domestic gardens. The males have bright yellow plumage although the females and juveniles are less colourful.
At first, people may mistake them for Blue Tits or Great Tits, but Siskin are distinctly different.
Siskins are also highly acrobatic feeders and they too are happy to share the feeders with other species.
Here the Siskins are sharing the feeders with Great Tits.
The last bird we videoed here today was the Bullfinch.
A family of these were in the trees, nervously flitting about waiting for the commotion on the bird feeds to die down.
After a while, the highly-coloured male Bullfinch landed on the feeders and struggled to get through the cage to the seeds. After a while it managed it and took some of the seeds.
The colours of the females and two juveniles were much less saturated and they largely remained in the nearby trees.
Despite this, these were a delight to see.
We and the other visitors did have a fleeting glimpse of a woodpecker. It was such a short sighting it wasn’t too clear which type it was at first.
However, studying the sizes of the three main woodpeckers in the UK and their plumage, it seems very much like this was a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
This made a lightning visit to the feeders, but it largely remained in the tree canopy; and we only managed to grab a couple of shots of it.
We spent a good hour or so here watching the birds on the feeders from behind the glass.
