    I think Carrie actually handled the Billy scenario perfectly, and that showed that sometimes when we care less, we can be more level headed and mature. Because Carrie's heart was never really in it with Billy, ironically she showed up as her best self. This layer is just another part of why I love SATC, it's quite true to life and the nuances and messiness of love.

Whereas Smith had no issue with this and I think that's why his and Samantha s relationship worked (until she broke it off I mean). Steve felt so threatened and he felt more like a man-child than an actual partner. The way he proposed to just have a baby for the sake of it, wanted a dog and didn't take care of him, he was so immature and him and Miranda should have never ended up together.

  • @KatBaumgarten
    @KatBaumgarten 6 месяцев назад +145

    Both what Big values about Natasha and what Carrie hates about her is that she is high class. Not money necessarily, though the so called "old money" comes with it, obviously. Carrie tends to reach for that livestyle with fashion, with men, with events, but always as a tourist. She's always a guest, never the host, always the odd one out. And high society is something you're born into, you can never charm your way onto the scene. Even if you marry into it, you're never *in*, something that Big later realises and the reason he goes back to Carrie and starts cheating on Natasha is that he sees that he married her for nothing, she will never be his ticket into high society because she holds the status in the relationship, not him. She has all the power and he resents her for that

    • @KayTea4tea
      @KayTea4tea 6 месяцев назад +11

      Big doesn ´t value Natasha ´s „high class“, whatever that means. Natasha is young and naive and Big is bored of her. You can ´t buy love, as much „high class“ you are or wanna be.

    • @KatBaumgarten
      @KatBaumgarten 6 месяцев назад +45

      @@KayTea4tea i get that, but i disagree. If the only thing he cared about Natasha was that she was young, he wouldn't have married her, and definitely not after only five months. He'd have just strung her along like he did Carrie.
      Big may be an asshole but he's not stupid. He knows divorce is expensive, he knows that treating a high society woman like Natasha the way he treated Carrie would never fly because people in those circles talk, gossip and they'd shut him out. Their marriage was transactional to him, he wanted a ticket into that exclusive club - he already has money, but his circle is more vulgar, new money, self made. He wants dynasty. When Natasha doesn't give him what he wants, he cheats, lies and turns into a worse version of who he was before

      @lorrilewis2178 6 месяцев назад +32

      I can't figure out why so many people think Big wasn't old money too. His mother was so obviously old money (look at the episode where Carrie goes to Big's church). I think he married Natasha because she was the type of women he was expected to be with.

    • @KatBaumgarten
      @KatBaumgarten 6 месяцев назад +26

      @@lorrilewis2178 i don't remember what episode, but at some point someone mentions Big is "self-made". Also his mom appears for 40 seconds while at church, a place people notoriously wear their best. Just because people have money for expensive clothes doesn't mean they are high society

      @@KatBaumgarten There's a scene where Carrie mentions to Charlotte what church Big goes to, and Charlotte's reaction implies that church is where people of status go. Based on various documentaries and interviews, we know that SJP was very influential in how Carrie was portrayed, from her fashion looks to how s3x scenes were shot.
    it’s rather absurd that, despite being a s3x columnist, Carrie presents as REALLY prude and boring when it comes to that subject.
    Heck, even Charlotte talks about booty play during her marriage with Trey! All three actors aside from SJP do topless nude scenes. So it starts to feel a bit silly, if you think about it. And it would explain why Bill thought she would be more open to kink, or at least more s3xuslly open-minded.
    I still think it’s good that she set boundaries, but I get the sense that Candace Bushnell didn’t intend herself to be portrayed this way. But SJP had the star power at the time, so she got a lot more control. Allegedly she took a lot of the designer pieces honestly with her, despite the costume team expressing this was not okay.
    I dunno. But “I couldn’t help but wonder”…how another more free-spirited actor would have portrayed this character.

I do see that when a man "loses" his woman to another man, he will biss about the woman instead of the man. Which, in a roundabout way, falls in line with patriarchal ideals. The woman is the one who takes the blame regardless of who is doing the bisssing.

    28:21 If Carrie was born rich and had great connections, Big would've been chasing her. But Carrie, being Carrie, she would chase someone of even higher status ( given that she retains the personality) ; She would've become Ms Big . But , things would've played out the same. She wouldn't be happy and might still end up cheating on her husband if he was someone on her level... Or if she married Big as an old money woman, Big would've STILL cheated on her ( he is a serial cheater after all ). The only way Carrie would've been happy wasn't by acquiring money , fame or a man ; but by working on herself, letting go of her insecurities and believing that she is enough.

    I am totally hooked on your videos! This Carrie-Big situation actually reminds me of the movie 500 Days Of Summer. I think the movie is pretty good and it perfectly shows the same situation in a relationship: one of them is convinced that they are perfect for each other, bla bla bla... But you can see that the other one just doesn't feel the same way, they are having a good time together, but that's it. Its amazing how we lie to ourselves sometimes and this movie is the perfect representation of that. Totally recommended!

    Spoilers for 1st movie.
    This is not me insulting Carrie here. I loved her in season 6 and the movie. This is me noticing a parallel.
    When the wedding was off, she spoke to Charlotte similar to her conversation with charlotte about his wedding with Natasha.
    Carrie said about her magazine article, Carrie said, “the article was I want and I did this.” For charlotte to respond, “it was from your point of view”.
    Carrie: “i let the wedding get bigger than big”.
    Charlotte has seen Carrie evolve and she was always a supportive friend, but it is interesting how she did the same thing she accused Natasha doing. Maybe Natasha got excited or felt the article was from her point of view too.
    And I am glad Carrie reached this conclusion and ruminated over this thought. I thought she handled it in a mature way which shows her growth in the movie compared to where she started at the beginning of the show.

    Carrie is dumb. She shouldn't have wasted her time with big anymore. Instead of hating on Natasha and trying to figure out what's so great about her in sneaky ways, she should have befriended her so that she could have found it out. It seemed like Natasha was open to that. Not only that, she could have had a good ally. Honestly, she would have had a better time getting into that social circle. Probably not just one, but having two high class friends and high society could have helped polish Carrie up. This could have elevated her, not just her fashion, not just economically, but mentally. Her column could have been less trash, and more wit and sophistication. Instead of one night stands, naked sex, and cheating affairs, it would have been sultry, sensual, and actually be a guide for navigating and bettering relationships. Not just "Oops this is what I/my friends did last weekend. Can't wait to tell you about it!" 😉 She could have eventually set Carrie up with someone else that was high status that actually thought she was worth while. Big would have cheated on Natasha with someone else. Let's face it, if it wasn't going to be Carrie, he was going to find somebody because he was feeling bored and insecure that she had the status power in the relationship. Instead of being the woman who was trying to run from Natasha, she could have been the woman running to Natasha to be aiding her after the no commitment guy who married her ended up cheating on her. She could have learned a thing or two from Natasha and the way she handled it. She probably would have taught Natasha somethings, like being more selfish and putting herself first. Though he probably would have thought that Carrie was just hanging around Natasha cuz she was trying to get close to him and not actually be friends with her. If Carrie was more strong-willed and not ruled by her emotions, she would have survived it. But knowing Carrie at this time, even if she did try, she probably would have faltered. If this was me in the scenario, he'd be dead wrong. I'm not here to steal you, I'm here to steal Natasha.

    The show runner-post hockey, of course-tried to message the character Carrie as TV’s first antiheroine. But it didn’t work, because the character was written as a poseur. The character wanted to be Manhattan royalty, but knew, at least on some level, that she didn’t have the right pedigree to break into that circle. So she tried to stake her Manhattan claim as an edgy Manhattan sex columnist and use that as a lever to pry her way into the upper echelons. But that edgy sex writer wasn’t who the character was either. She was shocked by mild kinks and preferences. Worst of all, she was petty, judgmental, and a wholly unreliable friend. From the jump, she was solidly delulu, wildly insecure, and completely self absorbed. She couldn’t be anti heroine, because she was thoroughly unlikeable and unrelatable.

    She wants to impress Natasha and be on the same level and even height because being as good as her makes her just as good as the woman she was left for. And just as worthy and wife material. It's not a girl vs girl thing. It's an "I'm like her or better" because she took my man and that makes me feel unworthy of being wife material. If I best her at least one way, I won't be the loser by a far. It makes the loss close.

    I had a man, ultimately an abusive relationship, and he would shame me for dressing the way I wanted. He was too afraid of me drawing the eye other other men, because ultimately he was deeply afraid I would leave him or cheat on him. And he was so mean about it, made me cry multiple times. After I dumped him, I realized what he'd done to me and I said to myself, NEVER AGAIN. I will always dress how I please. If the situation calls for it, sure I will dress in an appropriate way, I have tact. If I go to a "black tie" event, I understand I shouldn't wear a tank top and frayed jeans, that's no issue. But anything beyond that is my call, and no one has the right to tell me otherwise. It is not anyone's business how I dress, especially a man. That's just them trying to control me, control what I do. I will not tolerate that.

    Ok teeny tiny note, but I can completely understand being terrified of being half dressed, unexpectedly, in front of my ex boyfriend’s new wife vs being nude in a spa with friends and random women.

    Her avoiding drinking water is stupid, especially when she could go multiple times like most people do when they drink alcohol. Peeing on someone in the shower is a very low level thing and while anyone can refuse to do anything for any reason at any time, Carrie is a prude, which seems kind of ridiculous for a sexual anthropologist reporting on her friends and partners preferences. Her alternative was judgmental and it would have been more respectful to say it isn't for me or ask if he had any alternatives. Sure assert a boundary if it important, but don't be patronizing about what others want.

    It’s fine to change fashion for the guy you’re with if self expression through fashion never was your thing and it doesn’t mean much to you. Not every woman cares that much about what she wears 🤷‍♀️
