I love the atmosphere from Diablo 1, more scary and intense. Also the story it captivated me more then other 2 games. From my point of view the title of this game fits better. In Diablo 2 and 3 It's missing that feeling. Useless farming.

Diablo 1 had the best atmosphere and felt far more horror oriented whereas the other 2 games felt like they kept the theme but water downed the atmosphere Diablo 2 was great for being such a big improvement in not only combat but also items, classes, story, and bosses Diablo 3, while crap at launch, has proven to be a worthy game when RoS released. It's pretty addictive with the season system and adventure mode, although the horror atmosphere is pretty much nonexistent which is probably my biggest gripe with the game. It kept the hellish theme, but it felt more like "Bruce Campbell" horror in which it's not scary, just kinda cool.
When Diablo 1 came out I was not even a teenager. I remember being totally consumed by the atmosphere of feer and darkness. When the door to the Butcher's lair opened I was terrified. What a game. Many many game titles later I have never found one game that would have such a deep atmosphere as D1.
i dont agree with the "gay" statement. you just cant appreciate diablo 3. all the people i know who have played d3 loved the game and only critiqued the launch and some other unnecessary stuff. heck even i enjoyed d3 on my shitty laptop back in the day with my stepbrother. all you low life scumbags probably never played the game and just vibe with whatever someone says. maybe the horror side of the game faded a little but there are so many improvements we got nevermind visuals. blizzard has changed and people will change too, maybe i will hate d2 and d3 when d4 comes out and in the future i might only like d3 in the entire franchise. so what i'm saying here is, don't bullshit with people and when you got something to say, say it with confidence and maturity.

The original Diablo and WarCraft games made the foundation for Blizzard, but like with any other company they lost their gripe on basic greedy restraint. Diablo III was by all means a much more dumped down version of Diablo on most aspects from character building, abilities, gear to the lack of validity, justification and context in the story. The art style was also designed in a much more saturated cartoony style that deviated from the previous gothic/medieval theme. The entire meta of the game was basically gold farming for close to 2 years before the expansion created a different, yet just as boring, endgame with everything being centered around min-maxing the stat-sticks you have equipped. I'm not saying Diablo III was a bad game, I had some decent fun with it too, but it was a crappy Diablo game. If you consider these viewpoints as nothing but bullshit and a bandwagon ride, I suppose Blizzard just changed direction with a darker atmosphere in Diablo 4 for a random reason that has nothing to do with the points I made.
As far as I'm concerned, the first game nailed the theming and the desired sense of tension - but at the expense of playability. Having to click-spam was hard as Hell on the fingers and destroyed three perfectly good mice. Thank God, that's an easy piece of hardware to replace. :D As far as cons are concerned, I'd mention that back then, Blizz had no clue on how to moderate online play. I either played with close friends or family members - or just entirely offline. Going online meant you'd be exposed to dupers, player-killers or just awkwardly "helpful" types who'd shower you with gold just as you'd spawn in, killing all sense of challenge entirely. I remember a period in which introductory "gold showers" (not the kinky kind) was the go-to means of saying hello... Diablo II perfected the gameplay without making individual builds trivial. Being able to hold down a click to move or attack is a life-saver, and the already brisker pace and the addition of sprinting made encounters more tactical in nature. That sacrifices the first game's slow and tension-building crawl, but enemies are a lot more numerous on a per-map basis. That keeps the challenge up to a degree. Honestly, D2's my favorite, if only because you could give yourself ridiculous challenges based off of insane builds no mentally stable player would realistically want to try. Done everything there is to do? Try speccing a Sorceress who doesn't use spells and who only uses two-handed axes! Diablo 3, on the other hand, is incredibly polished and a little miracle of accessibility. It's not as dark or gothic in terms of visual design as the other two, sure, and the Necromancer class is missing - but I appreciate the fact that a lot of the fluff gets cut off. You'll only ever manage to get better with time and you can't gimp yourself by speccing your character in abortive ways. That kills the fun for some (me as well, to a degree), but it also focuses the experience. There's less trying and more doing. Otherwise, yeah - my gripes with it are standard as Hell: online-only sucks, the RMAH was a laughably predictable mistake, it doesn't pack the usual grit and grime we've come to expect out of the series, yadda yadda. It's competent, though, and I can't say I'm not having fun with my main character. Could I be having more fun with my old D2 Necro? Probably, but I don't think it's fair to expect one game to behave like another. I'd play D2 more often, and I'd definitely play it online - but it feels like there's nobody left on the official servers. Nobody outside of gold-farming peddlers, that is.

Just started a few characters on D1. Single and Multiplayer. People still appear even on Battle.Net there, normally on the US West gateway on channel Diablo USA-1 (even for non-US players). Just set up Hamachi and an IPX wrapper to play remotely with people I know, as well, avoiding Battle.Net too (if that's your thing).
I've played all three of the games and diablo 2 is the best one. Diablo 1 only thing i didn't like was the fact that you could not see the health bar of who you're fighting. Diablo 3 just started to get good plus the fact you can play on console is always good.
I'm in the middle of replaying D1. It's still a great game, solid 1-2 weeks worth of replayability there, I recommend anyone who's never tried it to give it a shot. For the most part, it plays fine under modern OSs.
Diablo 1 is still the best one for me. Powerful monsters, vicious demons, and savage undeads, shadows and dangers everywhere, creepy atmosphere, a character that, even with strong equipments, is still fragile as human, a fascinating story... A true masterpiece of terror ❤

From what I saw with the melee characters: Diablo 1 - health drops 50% in fight Diablo 2 - health drops 10% in fight Diablo 3 - health never drops during fight The casualization of RPG games summed it pretty well.
well, diablo 1 is verry dark and has a pretty deep feel to it. surely it is a pretty simle game compared to later ones, still has the verry best music, and the most coherent graphics. diablo 2 is tuned down by a lot. you don't get the deep feeling of diablo 1, meanwhile the gameplay did advance some. or not. its verry hard to do singleplayer max difficulty. if managable at all. at least i was unable. and it does not even feel that deep. diablo 3 with its multi-million damage hits, color cloud blurry cartoon graphics.. well.. its a new game. it has nothing to do with diablo. now diablo 2 had a looting system that made it pretty hard to get a given set, even if you had the proper runes it was hard to find a good item with enough sockets and so on.. while diablo 3 is even more for the general crowd. i don't like it. realy don't like diablo 3 at all. it just simply lacks everything that made diablo 1 a pretty damn good game. instead of dark things are now grey at best, there are no catchy tnes like the ones in diablo 1. actually if it was calle something else than diablo, then i would hardly find them relatives at all... kindof like WOW top screen mode. really.

Blizzard did an awesome job with this franchise. Incredible. Best game ever. 1, 2, 3 and the expansions. Awesome story, awesome gameplay, awesome graphics (3 should be darker I think) awesome atmosphere. Compared to the Diablo games Last of Us or GTA is nothing. The other games can hide behind this masterpiece.
Diablo 1 has the most iconic atmosphere and aesthetics, dark, gory, claustrophobic, there is something undeniably riveting and captivating about the descending into hell itself, the music, sound design and visibility contributed a lot to the atmosphere. Diablo 2 has amazing itemization, skill tree and replaybility, the story and the world expanded a lot, not as dark as D1 but still gothic and sometimes scary. D3 has an excellent combat system and combat pacing, and gameplay is arguably the best out of the three, but the story telling has been toned down, the dark and gory atmosphere is just...gone...

The atmosphere of diablo 1 is so great, you feel the evil beneath tristram, and the deeper you get down the more evil it gets. I love Diablo 2 the gameplay was so good, it lost a bit of the atmosphere, but i still love the way act 1-4-5 look, act 2-3 dont really have the right atmosphere but stil it was okay. When i played diablo 3 I didnt feel any of the diablo atmosphere or gameplay, so I stopped playing it. And now when I see the gameplay videos of diablo immortal it looks like there is even less of the diablo atmosphere than in diablo 3 :(
You know, i miss when being a melee, meant a armored person who hit things with his fucking weapon. No making rocks fall from the sky, not making volcanoes appear, not dropping a church bell on the enemy. Just hitting them with some cold hard icon weapon and hear them suffer.
I always had a problem with the inventory being full and not being able to carry all the loot I wanted. Was this fixed in diablo 3? I hope they at least added more space to the inventory if they don't want to add an unlimited inventory.

Iff Blizzard wants to make easy money, since all models of Diablo 2 where all rendered at high resolution, pick up all those D2 's 3d models and environnement, script them for a 3D gameplay, and I will buy it 60$ garanteed.
If you want to play the real successor to Diablo 2, check out Path of Exile. Been playing it for 2 years and I can say it's a better game even than D2. And I'm pretty big D2 fan.
If D3 was a large open field with hundreds of mobs to fight off that eventually led to caves with 3 elite packs and a guaranteed boss at the end it would be amazing. Maybe the new expansions "adventure mode" will be close enough, because as is it's a chore to play through a story with no enjoyable environments or moments.
I love D3, I have been a LONG time fan of Diablo. All of them are Great in my opinion. I think D3 had a more threatening version of Diablo though, he had the power of all 7 Evils, and seeing him Impale Imperious with ease, that was terrifying. But I will admit D2 was the best.

If only Blizzard North didn't got defunct in 2005 and the key people (Max Schaefer Erich Schaefer, David Brevik along with their team) responsible for Diablo and Diablo 2 expansion remained to complete Diablo 3. Things would be a different story and less people would rant compared to what we have today. Those guys know what they are doing. Blizzard Entertainment Major Stock Holder (Vivendi) are such assholes.

Blizzard is not great for having key employees but because of their methodology and approach to developing games. The only good games made by ex Blizz North employees after leaving are Torchlight 1 & 2. If you look at Blizz North's D3 version, no surprise blizzard made it all over again. That game wasn't updated graphically, it was the same D2 2.5D graphics. Now D3 had a bad start since most of the developers came from the WoW team. Now they have a better and more solid team who understand better what diablo is all about and each patch the game just gets way better with many many people coming back to it.

jere koLjonen If I remember well.. After you kill the diablo from diablo 1 your own character turns into diablo himself at the end (due the stone). So in diablo 2 you fight the diablo which was previously your hero. Not sure anymore tho.
I like D1 the best but would be better with a stash, with gold like it is in D2 and D3 (does not hog inventory space), health bars, some more random quests, and a few more levels (like double the number the levels).

In Diablo:Hellfire there is, maybe not in the early version..... I played him abit, but I am so much into warrior in Diablo 1, that I hardly play anyone else. Monk could be good on higher difficulties I think.
Been replaying the first one with my gf and holy shit is it good. but hard, im a level 9 wizard and still cant kill the butcher. I had to run away from him last night and it was honestly terrifying. I havent ever been as scared as that while playing 2 and 3. They really got the horror elements and spooky atmosphere just right in d1
Blizzard North spent years trying to complete D3 between 2001-2005 but their parent company Vivendi kept turning down early versions (especially one in 2002 and another in 2005) due to poor quality. A new Blizzard development team eventually took over the series, and an early 2008-2009 beta they received poor reviews from fans due to the dark atmosphere and areas; fans wanted to see a WoW-inspired theme. After a dozen years of ups and downs, D3 finally hit shelves this year....phew!
Between each game, you should have used the soundtrack of the area, would've been priceless ! Because hearing this music from D3 on a Diablo comparison feels like D3 is the winner but isn't at all :(
Huh, it's funny though but most videos from Diablo 3 shown here are from the time before it was even released. Which means that they are out of date, and not reflecting the real game which is Diablo 3. Oh and by the way, yes I think Diablo 3 is not what we all expected, but rather a reboot/remake of what we already had in Diablo 1,2, and LOD. With some WOW graphism on top of that... nothing more nothing less, aside form the BIG frustration this game brought true fans of the franchise...
D3 is great. It's well made. And as far as hack and slash RPGs go, it's one of the best. But I pity the people that thought anything could stand up to the masterpiece that was d2. D3 was fine, but it couldn't live up to its name.

If you have a good reason to dislike D3 then that's understandable but if you shit all over it without any good reason then you're a close minded asshole. Diablo 1 = classic dungeon crawler, but today it is an juggernaut. Diablo 2 = doing all the quest in all the acts. Also really popular hack and slash rpg back in the 2000s and it stills holds up. Diablo 3 = all about just doing rifts or greater rifts and trying to get the high score during seasons.
diablo 1 had the most intense and overwhelming atmosphere but awful mechanics with poor character build also gameplay. but diablo 2 is the milestone of hack&slash rpg games. the most remembered game in the diablo franchising. the world got to know the diablo series with diablo 2 and fell in love with it. it kept its dark ambiance with its amazing intense places and yet with beautiful&fast gameplay, with incredible character build. blizzard didnt ruin diablos idiosyncratic structure until diablo 3. and for the diablo 3, lost all of its aura its darkness. turn into typical hack and slash games little bit of diablo sauce on it. with lame ass lightning, soundeffects and soft animation, its like not for base diablo fan but new generaition. turn into a stupid market game.

i miss rune words on items. Like Ral+Ort+Tal on a kite shield for Ancients Pledge. Among others.

I've played all three of the games and diablo 2 is the best one. Diablo 1 only thing i didn't like was the fact that you could not see the health bar of who you're fighting.
Diablo 3 just started to get good plus the fact you can play on console is always good.

I'm in the middle of replaying D1. It's still a great game, solid 1-2 weeks worth of replayability there, I recommend anyone who's never tried it to give it a shot. For the most part, it plays fine under modern OSs.

From what I saw with the melee characters:
Diablo 1 - health drops 50% in fight
Diablo 2 - health drops 10% in fight
Diablo 3 - health never drops during fight
The casualization of RPG games summed it pretty well.
Personally I still prefer Diablo 1 for the atmosphere and the music......and those first 8 secs....LOL!!!!! That's just f*%king awesome!!!
well, diablo 1 is verry dark and has a pretty deep feel to it.
surely it is a pretty simle game compared to later ones, still has the verry best music, and the most coherent graphics.
diablo 2 is tuned down by a lot. you don't get the deep feeling of diablo 1, meanwhile the gameplay did advance some. or not. its verry hard to do singleplayer max difficulty. if managable at all. at least i was unable. and it does not even feel that deep.
diablo 3 with its multi-million damage hits, color cloud blurry cartoon graphics.. well.. its a new game. it has nothing to do with diablo.
now diablo 2 had a looting system that made it pretty hard to get a given set, even if you had the proper runes it was hard to find a good item with enough sockets and so on..
while diablo 3 is even more for the general crowd. i don't like it. realy don't like diablo 3 at all. it just simply lacks everything that made diablo 1 a pretty damn good game.
instead of dark things are now grey at best, there are no catchy tnes like the ones in diablo 1.
actually if it was calle something else than diablo, then i would hardly find them relatives at all...

Blizzard did an awesome job with this franchise. Incredible. Best game ever. 1, 2, 3 and the expansions. Awesome story, awesome gameplay, awesome graphics (3 should be darker I think) awesome atmosphere. Compared to the Diablo games Last of Us or GTA is nothing. The other games can hide behind this masterpiece.
Diablo 1 has the most iconic atmosphere and aesthetics, dark, gory, claustrophobic, there is something undeniably riveting and captivating about the descending into hell itself, the music, sound design and visibility contributed a lot to the atmosphere. Diablo 2 has amazing itemization, skill tree and replaybility, the story and the world expanded a lot, not as dark as D1 but still gothic and sometimes scary. D3 has an excellent combat system and combat pacing, and gameplay is arguably the best out of the three, but the story telling has been toned down, the dark and gory atmosphere is just...gone...
I don’t know about everyone else but I love D3 to heart and I definitely can’t wait for D4!!!

You know, i miss when being a melee, meant a armored person who hit things with his fucking weapon. No making rocks fall from the sky, not making volcanoes appear, not dropping a church bell on the enemy. Just hitting them with some cold hard icon weapon and hear them suffer.
I always had a problem with the inventory being full and not being able to carry all the loot I wanted. Was this fixed in diablo 3? I hope they at least added more space to the inventory if they don't want to add an unlimited inventory.

If you want to play the real successor to Diablo 2, check out Path of Exile. Been playing it for 2 years and I can say it's a better game even than D2. And I'm pretty big D2 fan.
If D3 was a large open field with hundreds of mobs to fight off that eventually led to caves with 3 elite packs and a guaranteed boss at the end it would be amazing. Maybe the new expansions "adventure mode" will be close enough, because as is it's a chore to play through a story with no enjoyable environments or moments.
I love D3, I have been a LONG time fan of Diablo. All of them are Great in my opinion. I think D3 had a more threatening version of Diablo though, he had the power of all 7 Evils, and seeing him Impale Imperious with ease, that was terrifying. But I will admit D2 was the best.

+Blitzwing39 Well to be honest, their game after leaving: hellgate london was terrible. Blizzard is not great for having key employees but because of their methodology and approach to developing games. The only good games made by ex Blizz North employees after leaving are Torchlight 1 & 2. If you look at Blizz North's D3 version, no surprise blizzard made it all over again. That game wasn't updated graphically, it was the same D2 2.5D graphics.
Now D3 had a bad start since most of the developers came from the WoW team. Now they have a better and more solid team who understand better what diablo is all about and each patch the game just gets way better with many many people coming back to it.

If I remember well.. After you kill the diablo from diablo 1 your own character turns into diablo himself at the end (due the stone).
So in diablo 2 you fight the diablo which was previously your hero. Not sure anymore tho.

I like D1 the best but would be better with a stash, with gold like it is in D2 and D3 (does not hog inventory space), health bars, some more random quests, and a few more levels (like double the number the levels).
for me diablo 1 is simply the better game... down to it's simplicity as well! And overall nice story

In Diablo:Hellfire there is, maybe not in the early version..... I played him abit, but I am so much into warrior in Diablo 1, that I hardly play anyone else. Monk could be good on higher difficulties I think.

I havent ever been as scared as that while playing 2 and 3. They really got the horror elements and spooky atmosphere just right in d1

For me it's D1.
Blizzard North spent years trying to complete D3 between 2001-2005 but their parent company Vivendi kept turning down early versions (especially one in 2002 and another in 2005) due to poor quality. A new Blizzard development team eventually took over the series, and an early 2008-2009 beta they received poor reviews from fans due to the dark atmosphere and areas; fans wanted to see a WoW-inspired theme. After a dozen years of ups and downs, D3 finally hit shelves this year....phew!
Things have changed since Diablo ROS.
Between each game, you should have used the soundtrack of the area, would've been priceless ! Because hearing this music from D3 on a Diablo comparison feels like D3 is the winner but isn't at all :(

Huh, it's funny though but most videos from Diablo 3 shown here are from the time before it was even released. Which means that they are out of date, and not reflecting the real game which is Diablo 3. Oh and by the way, yes I think Diablo 3 is not what we all expected, but rather a reboot/remake of what we already had in Diablo 1,2, and LOD. With some WOW graphism on top of that... nothing more nothing less, aside form the BIG frustration this game brought true fans of the franchise...
D3 is great. It's well made. And as far as hack and slash RPGs go, it's one of the best. But I pity the people that thought anything could stand up to the masterpiece that was d2. D3 was fine, but it couldn't live up to its name.

I haven't played D1 or D2 but I find it hilarious how people think they're so much better than D3 cos they're not. Yeah sure, D3 sucked at first but it has improved massively since then and now it's fucking awesome. D3 is different but that doesn't mean it's worse. Thank god I'm not one of those whiny close minded assholes that complain about everything and hate a game when it does something different and isn't what they expected. That's why I can appreciate games like Resident Evil 5, Castlevania: LoS, Final Fantasy XIII, Dark Souls 2 and so on. Those games are amazing but a lot of people hate them just cos they're different than their predecessors.

Actually I said that people think D1 and D2 are SO MUCH BETTER than D3. Basically, a lot of people think that D3 is complete shit while the first two games are fucking godly masterpieces. While I haven't played D1 and D2 I have seen a lot of stuff about them and they look awesome. I understand why some people prefer the more darker atmosphere and more detailed leveling system and stuff but what pisses me off is that those people shit all over D3 just because it's different. Even I prefer the darker atmosphere and I can't wait to play D1 and D2 someday but I can also appreciate the things that D3 does. If you have a good reason to dislike D3 then that's understandable but if you shit all over it without any good reason then you're a close minded asshole. Personally I think I'm gonna enjoy D1 and D2 maybe even more than D3 because of their dark atmosphere. So again, my point is: different doesn't mean worse. Anyway, have a good day :)

Diablo 1 = classic dungeon crawler, but today it is an juggernaut.
Diablo 2 = doing all the quest in all the acts. Also really popular hack and slash rpg back in the 2000s and it stills holds up.
Diablo 3 = all about just doing rifts or greater rifts and trying to get the high score during seasons.

but diablo 2 is the milestone of hack&slash rpg games. the most remembered game in the diablo franchising. the world got to know the diablo series with diablo 2 and fell in love with it. it kept its dark ambiance with its amazing intense places and yet with beautiful&fast gameplay, with incredible character build. blizzard didnt ruin diablos idiosyncratic structure until diablo 3.
and for the diablo 3, lost all of its aura its darkness. turn into typical hack and slash games little bit of diablo sauce on it. with lame ass lightning, soundeffects and soft animation, its like not for base diablo fan but new generaition. turn into a stupid market game.
