  • RAW footage of 3 first gen Tacoma's doing the Rubicon trail on our annual trip featuring good times and broken parts.
    Both IFS Tacoma's are on 33's and the one ton SAS Tacoma is on 40's.

    Nice video. I did Fordyce to the first water crossing. Almost actually. Some built rigs were coming back up and said not to go down due to snow. Good times. 2021 zr2 on 34 swampers with a 2.5 inch lift and 4.56 regear.

    Impressed with the IFS ones. Mine is very similarly built. Never considered taking it through Rubicon but it seems like it could do it after seeing this. I'd probably put an Eaton front locker on it though.

      @@ianlennox4633 I have the stock gearing (4.10) and factory rear locker on my 03. What gears would you recommend? It is my daily and tow vehicle so I wouldn't wanna go too crazy. 4:88's? I do struggle getting my boat out of the water sometimes as well so gearing would help there, too.

      My buddies brand new G003's performed noticeably better than my 1 year old set on the trail. Time will tell how they perform as they get older

    What lift do you guys run on the two IFS Tacoma's?

      Roughly 2.5-3in with coilovers and custom leaf packs

    Can you tell me what the gear ratios are in those? I'm regearing IFS 33's and am torn on 4.88 or 5.29. Its Manual and I carry some weight.

      Definitely 4.88 for a manual. 5.29 would have a wayyy high rpm on the highway with 33s. We're both 4.88. Mine is manual and buddy is auto

    What wheels, size and offset on the IFS silver Taco? Any rubbing? Appreciate it

      I think they're BR6 SCS wheels with 3.5-in backspacing. You have to hammer and clearance the firewall area and your fenders and flares in order to fit 295s, which he's running

    Besides the grey beast, are all others running on stock lbjs? Any ideas on a good mod for LBJs?

      Yes. No problems with them as long as you check them for play periodically. Total chaos makes a lower uniball conversion for the 1st gen lbj. Expensive though

    How do you like those solo lower control arms? Anybody running the later sequoia spindles, balljoints and tie rods?

      They're solid. No issues with them as long as you don't have the cams crossed up.
      All stuff is for 1st gen tacos on our rigs. No sequoia parts

    I have the same front suspension setup as the red truck except I'm running kings instead of fox. Did you have any issues? I haven't been able to get mine on a trail yet...

      @@blakef8314 No issues so far really. Only thing has been the brake line fitting on the caliper of the tundra brakes coming in contact with the coilover at full lock and full compression. It has kind of self clearanced itself though now.

      Both of the ifs 1st gens are running all pro skid plates. Both front and trans skid plate

      Any final assessment regarding front / rear Ist gen bumpers for fire trails no extreme climbing yet an ability to move beyond certain elevation dips that end up bashing front / rear of these trucks plus extra gas/ fuel- fire can remain underneath and general commuting “ mayhem “

      2.7 sr5 manual w a/c / basic not even electric windows ( which I specifically did not want on my truck)
      Any input regarding a non trd and… either sourcing a Tacoma elocker axle and going through the locker/ refresh and what is required to install and connect
      Or is an air locker preferred ?
      I do not come upon the elocker retrofit on line
      Is it performance, or cost or ease of install by many and shops that drives a choice ?

      Custom alcan leaf pack: 500 lb over stock capacity and 3-in lift. 4-in durobump bump stops. 10 in smooth body Fox 2.0 shocks with resis

    does anyone know what gen a 1983 Toyota is considered I have one I have had since 1983 is it called the real Toyota lol where did they come up with the Tacoma name it always sounded stupid to me

      They are generally referred to as “pickup” or just “truck” as my title said for my 91 as Toyota removed the name Hilux from the US market. (They were called Hilux everywhere else). The Tacoma was introduced in 1995.5 and is only sold in the US. The Hilux is still sold overseas. (1st gen Tacomas are from 1995.5-2004)
      The generations are somewhat debated on the older trucks. Some start at the beginning, some seperate the 4x4s. Yours would be a 3rd gen pickup or 1st gen 4x4.

      @@crispyboyy ya some people swap them out for manual hubs. My 4cyl came with them. But I have since swapped to ADD for rcv compatibility

      Takes a fair amount of work to tub the front firewall to clear them. Lots of cutting and welding
