I really enjoyed this video man. I feel like the cool thing about Cyberpunk fashion is that it can be mixed into a lot of different types of fashion and still feel like it could be from the Cyberpunk genre. For example in a cyberpunk world, overpopulation might be one the biggest problems within that world, so you could see all walks of life incorporate their version of what they would wear within the cyberpunk world and how seem less it feels cause it's such a common thing to see in that world due to the overpopulation. Another example I feel like would fit within that Cyberpunk would be people incorporating clothing styles from past eras into the cyberpunk world like how we are doing it now, like how the bomber jacket is a huge staple within the genre, and we can see it has been a staple from WW2, to the 80s to our current time. Keep up the good work man.

Watching this over 3 years on and was struck during the section where you talked about the multi-purpose inclusion of masks in the aesthetic and realized how much of what you're talking about is applicable to the outfit worn by a certain high profile individual in NY 1.5 weeks ago - utility clothing with a jacket and face mask, a back pack that (to my naive eyes) informed by the trends I associate with technical wear etc. A good demonstration of the way these trends develop in real time.
One of the most informative and inspiring videos I have ever seen. Well done sir. This is your finest moment to date. Keep up the great work. All the way from sunny England.
My good man this was amazingly done really well researched it’s kind of interesting because it was science-fiction movies that made me curious about the style of clothes, science fiction and synthwave music I should say!
makes sense why you are drawn to techwear! same here, I was a scifi fan growing up and then started listing to stuff like bladee and now i ended up here lol
@@corbincore You do it while man , you and fly with Johnny Thai and this is Antwon were the first people that I stumbled over when I first started looking for tips on where to get clothes etc.
My personal go-to combinations: -International streetwear (obviously east asian but not exclusively. I've been trying to incorporate more middle eastern aesthetics) -bright ass colors -E-waste accessories -face masks -sick jackets (when weather appropriate) And of course, digital piracy & old tech
Beautiful video Corbin, the quality here is insane! I always loved the influence of time and how we perceive it and it's influence on the arts. If we look at fashion in particular, we're stuck in a loop of past trends from the late 1900s. However techwear and other similar fashion aesthetics almost do the opposite. I think how we perceive these dystopian and hyper-futuristic futures to look like, stem from how we believed the future to be like back in the 1970s for example, where it was said we'd be" driving around in flying cars" in 2015. Those lost futures that haven't came to fruition, I believe have influenced the super modern futures that films like Blade Runner and thus the styles of clothing we see in those films. In a sense, the past always influences the future. I think you would find the concept of Hauntology very interesting to look into further. It is the idea that we're at the ends of time and we're perpetually stuck in a loop, constantly being haunted from the past. I believe it directly influences pop culture today massively. Although technology has progressed massively, the concept of hauntology rules that our cultural progression has remained very cyclical. I really enjoyed watching this vid, very informative and some really great points. I hope to see more of these types of videos in the future!
Thank you man! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts as well! Its interesting how in the heyday of cyberpunk (1980s-1990s) the fashion was almost a combination of old and a prediction of the future (ie original blade runner, looks like 1940s fashion but propelled into a future dystopia). I just looked up Hauntology and thats a very interesting concept. very relevant to our fashion world today I think! Thats one of the reasons why I like techwear because its different from the old.
@@corbincore couldn't of said it better myself! I almost feel as if techwear goes in the opposite direction of the common clothing trends today. Very future focused and high quality as opposed to trend hopping and fast fashion.
Really great video and analysis, thank you. It covers all the cyberpunk fashion essentials and roots, and I hope it can be helpful for those interested in the culture.
I appreciate the kind words. I wanted to structure the video where someone who knows a limited amount about cyberpunk and fashion could still follow. even then I learned a whole lot about both topics while researching.
@@corbincore I can see the thought that went into it. Also I'd like to build on the idea that the cyberpunk genre responds to fears of corporate control and technological infiltration. The fashion industry itself is seeing immense growth with conglomerates such as the LMVH group, and it begs the question...will creativity die in the pursuit of profit? It will be very interesting to see how young, emerging designers respond to this shift and express themselves as a way of retaliating to the diminishing fashion culture.
This was beautiful. Thank you so much for all the work that must have gone into this, wow! I’ve been waiting for CyberPunk to be readily available to the masses for decades. I know many people hate when something new or reinvented becomes more mainstream, but not me! It adds to the look and feel while out in the world. Plus, I feel when someone truly enjoys something, it’s not because it’s scarce or not well known. That’s more of being drawn to the scarcity itself which is artificial and forever changing.
That. was. beautiful! As a "fashion conscious" society we are so caught up in reinventing the past and for a while now I have found a fascination with Cyberpunk and it's ability to look beyond that. I really enjoyed that you explored the relation between both this subculture and that of Techwear, how they're often grouped to be one and the same, and yet they're not mutually exclusive. I must say I have had scattered thoughts on how to succinctly describe or define Cyberpunk (in fashion) as a genre, I have often struggled to elaborate more than "dystopian"... without rambling, or I've just referred to the film equivalent. However, thanks to your delightfully concise summary, I feel I have a clearer picture of what it truly embodies, as both a segment in fashion but also it's constantly evolving role and purpose in the culture of today.
I really appreciate your comment! thank you! Adding the summary was definitely needed, this was my first video essay and I would always want to go in different directions when writing the script. distilling "cyberpunk fashion" from cyberpunk media, who's core values don't always have much to do with fashion was not as clear cut as I thought it was going to be.
Personally mentally I live in a dystopian cyberpunk world, and then played cyberpunk 2077 and fell in love. Then went into the rabbit hole of movies and fashion
All it takes is something to spark interest and then its easy to go down the rabbit whole! For me it was fashion/techwear which lead to be more interested in cyberpunk. I'm glad you like the game, I haven't played it yet but I might pick it up soon!
Great video! as a lifelong lover of cyberpunk/techwear style, I noticed that I also have a special attraction to the more niche, warcore category. after watching this video, I realize that I too am being shaped by the world events around me. EX: the current European conflict. I guess that subconsciously, I was expressing these feelings through my clothing style.
Great video! Some Miyazaki (ghibli studio) films fit into this genre (Nausicaä, howls moving castle,...). Though they concentrate more on the environmental aspects.
Yes you've got a lot of good facts !! Plus thanks to books like neucromancer and other cyberpunk media its like we aren't far from this dystopian society
good video and very interesting topic. For future video essays i'd recommend working more on structure (i found that some sentences introduced topics and dont finish them) and making sure that the "tone" stays consistent. (some sentences feel more professional and "essay-like" while others feel more relaxed and informal). A smaller nitpick would be the pacing feels a bit up and down, like the tempo of the sentences and how fast you say them. Once again good video and i hope to see more content like this it was pretty interesting!
btw i'd reccomend to look at how, philosophy tube, jacob geller, leadhead, nerdwriter and "disrupt" do video essays. IMO those are some of the best video essayists on the platform
Thank you man! and I appreciate the constructive criticism! Video essays have a surprising amount of factors affecting them. I agree with the tone/ structure. I would record on different days and sometimes write later on into the script after I already recorded/edited a section. I think my next one might be a bit shorter so I can hopefully keep a more consistent tone/topic. I am familiar with some like Nerdwriter but I'll look up the others. videos essays are perfect for the RUclips platform IMO.
Well done! I think you should check out Julius and it's diffusion line Niløs. The older collections look 100% dystopian and quite inspirational, Horikawa (the designer) has stated that he draws inspiration from Akira, Blade Runner and Tokyo as well as from military clothing. Also you can see how the aesthetic of the brand changes in 2013-16 still being cyberpunkish but in another, more refined way. I wouldn't say modern Julius is what it used to be, but then there's Niløs which has more of a cyberpunk streetwear style and is not as subtle as the style of the brands you've mentioned. The Viridi-Anne is another brand that I think you'll like (even more than those I mentioned above). Tomoaki Okinawa often uses high-quality technical fabrics such as schoeller, cordura, etc. and mixes techwear with avant-garde formal wear. Thank you for making such an interesting and long video without trying to cut corners!
I really appreciate it!! I just looked up Julius/Niløs and I can definitely see it. it looks like pretty wearable stuff as well, its "cyberpunk" but looks usable for almost everyday casual wear. same goes with Viridi-Anne, looks like you can get some nice deals on the second hand market with that stuff! I appreciate the mention of those other designers
It would be nice to have a complementary essay to this. something like the fashion sense of Tron. This essay is a huge help to the story (comic) I'm writing and drawing. thank you for giving us this awesome video.
Great essay! If there ever happens to be a kind of sequel, it would be really interesting to take a look at other futuristic and even deconstructive brands. Army of Me or the 11BYBBS, for example
I think I might revisit this topic later on once I have thought about it more! 11bybbs are some of my favorite shoes haha. super cool brand! fits the cyberpunk/dystopian aesthetic.
I feel like it’d be cool if you were to make a book collection vid since those Star Wars books/graphic novels are normally in your background and Ghost In the Shell as well as Akira have manga box sets that I feel you would enjoy... great video yet again 👍🏻
Thank you for doing this, i love it and it is very detailed take on the cyberpunk genre and fashion. Keep it up ! Would love to watch another video essay on topic related to techwear 🛸

really well done, that is a nice-to-watch work of yours. you are on top of your game! I really find it interesting how much fabrics have played a role in clothing, from the start (earliest garments) to futuristic fashion. Every garment serves many functions, and techwear and cyberpunk inspired gear always share the aspect of functionality as protection against the environment.
I really appreciate it, man!! I remember back when my videos were really bad, you would give some really good constructive criticism which drastically helped me in the video production process, so thank you. fabric tech is very interesting and once I started wearing goo functional clothing, I don't really want to go back because it works so well and is comfortable
@@corbincore I am very busy with a few projects, mainly university, secondary something I am not allowed to talk about yet. Still wanna do some sort of a collab this year, as I am finally finding more time to focus on whats important to me. Still in for a collab? if yes, shot me a message or an email and lets figure this out.
Great video! My only critique is to reference more designers that are relevant to this theme outside of boring Yeezy. Marine Serre is a way more relevant brand with themes of dystopianism, environmental disaster, humanity, technology, resourceful design ect.
Dude. This video, hits right ❤ I've started experimenting with Cyberpunk fashion and there's def a learning curve, especially when it comes to techwear. The practicality of the pieces is the difference between fashion you can wear day to day and the cosplay of the Cyberpunk aesthetic.
Thank you man! it takes a lot of time to refine a personal style and I continue to do so. there's definitely a line between "inspired" by cyberpunk and cosplay, it can be easy to cross over that.
Man, I love that Xeoniq gets a feature. And love seeing Antwon in here as well. Functional and technical garments deserve such a vaster audience, but sadly there's not that many out there with the necessary knowledge to offer an informed look on it. If anyone has any other channels I should see in this space, I'd love to check them!
had to shout out the boys! I think overtime functional/technical clothing will gain a bigger audience! a channel called "sewmuchblack" focuses on technical clothing but he doesn't post that often, good videos though.
its back im seeing many celebs adapting to it againg like in the music videos and fashion for instant justine skye new video and doja cat uses it alot she been into it the shape and concepts getting wilder and creative at the same time this year that whole plastic look becoming more wearable tihs year
It's funny to me that this is the first of your videos I've seen. I've been into tech wear (and cyberpunk) for years now, and know other creators drop your name. 😎 I really like your take on the topic, you coming to the genre via fashion is really interesting as I am the opposite. When Akira, GITS, BR, Neuromancer etc... first came out there was no market for the fashion we have today. Hell I played the table-top version of Cyberpunk2077 🤷♂️ #techwear certainly didn't exist. When I first saw #techninja someplace, maybe EH, my head almost exploded. I was pleasantly surprised with your video, by that I mean the evolution of my style has been directly influenced by science fiction and cyberpunk in particular, before anyone outside of the community knew the term 'techwear', I would tell my friends I dressed as a background character in a Sci-Fi movie. To hear that you came to the genre through the fashion is a testament to how much this genre has influenced design and art since the 80s and 90s. As you said, not everything tech wear is cyberpunk, but it is also true that not everything cyberpunk is tech wear. I think the social, political, economic, and environmental anxieties of our world now have absolutely given the Cyberpunk genre a new life. We should also consider (I know I do, living here in LA) that both Akira and Blade Runner took place in 2019, combine that with a pandemic and it seems causal to me that "techwear" had it's highest search frequency in 2020, nearly twice the previous high the year before. \end.rant
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this (or "rant" as you put it)! and thank you. I feel like a lot of people who are into techwear are people who also are fans of scifi, probably in a greater proportion from other fashion enthusiasts (minimalist, streetwear, hype etc.)
After checking out prices of clothes from brands mentioned in this video, it's clear that I could never afford any of them. Any cheap brands to recommend?
@@corbincore Thanks! It just looks awesome. I have an issue of having pretty non-standard body type, about 6.6 feet tall with 14 US shoe size. It's a bit challenging to find a perfect fit. Do you happen to know some good brands which produce elongated/long fit?
@@enchantner damn you are tall! There are made-to-order options like Enfin Leve or Rosen-x, if you like that aesthetic. mainline Arcteryx makes some decent stuff and I think they have bigger sizes
I believe cyberpunk styles stems from street and not fashion. Punk rock style comes from a “do it yourself” custom mentality. I remember being young in high school and sewing my own pants to get them as tight as possible and sewing up patches to clothes or ripping up tshirt designs and adding them to sweater. Punk rock also only comes from poverty. You can buy fashion but you can’t buy style. It’s so lame seeing fashion places trying to sell the astatic of cyberpunk for 100 dollars and up. It’s definitely the opposite of “fight the man”. Reminds me of how grunge style from Seattle was taken and sold in stores. I see the street culture specially 80s and 90s being the biggest influence on the style of cyberpunk. Cyberpunk clothes being street means you can’t show up to the hood dressed mad goofy. You would get roasted or beat up. Punk has always been an attitude and not a aesthetic to be cool. It was supposed to be the opposite of what is cool since punk rock has never been in style. At this point in my life I’m 30 and I just dress like Steve Jobs and still don’t give a f… I do like wearing some joggers and some running shoes. I like layering for winter and love 90s sweaters jackets and flannels I buy from the thrift store. I like dressing like I live in the same world of blade runner and Akira. Thank you so much for posting this video. I learned so much from it and very thankful for your time and sharing. I love all the clothes shown and the richness behind them.
hey man great video essay but just one thing, know bladerunner? u must right since its a staple when talking about cyberpunk, there were a few fashion "releases" by certain designers HEAVILY inspired by the original blade runner dating back from the 90s till the 10s if recall correctly, do you happen to know these by any chance? i saved the video about it but couldnt find it, hoping you could jog my memory a bit. thanks in advance mate
Amazing video! Thanks a lot! Learning the history is key to loving the art more. I have a question. Eventually, we will all have to go back to work. I work at a corporate desk job. Is there any way you can cover techware in the business world? I want to integrate my style to what I wear to work. My work dress code is business casual so I don't always need blazers.
8:07 I like how we can hear what sounds like gesticulation with your hands. Probably while wearing some sort of techwear.
One of the most informative and inspiring videos I have ever seen. Well done sir. This is your finest moment to date. Keep up the great work. All the way from sunny England.
that's very kind of you, good sir. eventually i'd like to do another video essay like this!
This video was really well made and interesting. I've been a fan of cyberpunk style for while but I feel like I still learned a lot from watching this
Thank you man. I’m glad you enjoyed it!!
My personal go-to combinations:
-International streetwear (obviously east asian but not exclusively. I've been trying to incorporate more middle eastern aesthetics)
-bright ass colors
-E-waste accessories
-face masks
-sick jackets (when weather appropriate)
And of course, digital piracy & old tech
I wanted to structure the video where someone who knows a limited amount about cyberpunk and fashion could still follow. even then I learned a whole lot about both topics while researching.
this is such an amazing topic that has interested me for a long time, this was a great video!!
im glad you enjoyed it! i've been thinking of this topic for a while now
@@corbincore I can see the thought that went into it.
Damn bro! I've watched your video and OMG, it changed my vision of the world. Thank you!
Definitely one of my fav videos so far
its one of my favorite videos i've done as well!
That. was.
@@corbincore It hits the feels maaaaan, it’s soo good! Highly recommend! If you’re 50/50 would recommend waiting till they fix some bugs 😅
I appreciate it! I can see it. Ghibli studio films are always so well done.
Super cool video, man. Looking forward to more stuff like this.
thanks man! I'll start thinking of more video essay ideas! it was rewarding to make.
Yes you've got a lot of good facts !! Plus thanks to books like neucromancer and other cyberpunk media its like we aren't far from this dystopian society
thank you! for real. 1984 aint too far off either lol

I loved this video, voice silky smooth, very informative, nice background images, much inspiration. Thank you very much
I loved this! Very well thought out and nicely produced.
I appreciate it! editing took SOO long
good video and very interesting topic.
@@corbincore I agree, they really popped off in the past few years! I'll be on the lookout for the next one.
Nice work man! I'm newly interested in techwear and this was a great introduction to the underlying philosophy. Liked and saved.
I'm glad it was helpful!!
It would be nice to have a complementary essay to this. something like the fashion sense of Tron.
This essay is a huge help to the story (comic) I'm writing and drawing. thank you for giving us this awesome video.
Love the detailed and thoughtful explanation here
Great essay!
Appreciate the deep dive, very well done and comprehensive.
Thank you man! I hope you enjoyed it
Please what soundtrack is playing at 2:38?
Great Documentary though 🔥🔥
I feel like it’d be cool if you were to make a book collection vid since those Star Wars books/graphic novels are normally in your background and Ghost In the Shell as well as Akira have manga box sets that I feel you would enjoy... great video yet again 👍🏻

Fantastic! Very cool and informative essay
I appreciate it man. I kept on wanting to add more stuff because theres so much to talk about.
really well done, that is a nice-to-watch work of yours. you are on top of your game!
Thank you man. I included Yeezy because most people are familiar with the brand! I can see it with Marine Serre.
I think overtime functional/technical clothing will gain a bigger audience! a channel called "sewmuchblack" focuses on technical clothing but he doesn't post that often, good videos though.
its back im seeing many celebs adapting to it againg like in the music videos and fashion for instant justine skye new video and doja cat uses it alot she been into it the shape and concepts getting wilder and creative at the same time this year that whole plastic look becoming more wearable tihs year
I totally see that! I think even The Weeknd's newer stuff has a lot of synthwave undertones to the production
really nicely done video- some of your best work!
i appreciate it! I wanted to make it thorough!
It's good to see people who still talk about Blade Runner and Ghost in the shell as Cyberpunk instead of just talking about that fucking game.
i haven't even played the game yet haha. I was but then heard of all the bugs and just skipped it for now
Great video
The video just came out like 2 minutes ago😂
I appreciate it man!
This was a GREAT video, damn good job dude
I appreciate it man! it was fun to make
It's funny to me that this is the first of your videos I've seen.
Let's get a new release, very interesting!!! For example, about Dainese, Alpine Stars, Aviatore R1 smart jackets
Awesome video, thank you for being thorough and informative!

I didn't understand everything (French guy x) ) but that what very interesting. and put some question on why go to this side of clothes
Thank you!! I still hope it was enjoyable!
At this point in my life I’m 30 and I just dress like Steve Jobs and still don’t give a f…
I do like wearing some joggers and some running shoes.
