Thank you for this video! Its helped demonstrate Jacob's alternate tuning in a way that feels more approachable. I'm still really new to guitar so i'm sticking to standard tuning for now as I learn my ABCs but I will defo revisit this video again when I feel like I can try this style of tuning soon. It looks so fun!
Ok I’m commenting before I watch this, but I just tried this just today, it’s genius and so simple. It’s like an open tuning but you can access the minor 3 easily as well. It’s basically a sus 2 when you bar across. I personally have mine tuned to E B F# B E so I can hit the open E major. With the 3rd being in the middle it makes it so easy to hit major and minor chords

I use alternate tunings quite a bit so it's not really new to me but I understand how eye opening it can be if you aren't familiar. DADGAD , DADF#AD and DGCGCD are all quite good to start too.

DAECGD low to high. However it might be a little weird to have E3 physically above C3 on the neck, so IDK if it would change the relationship between strings, the fingerings, playability in general or what, but you could also try DACEGD if you think or already kinda know how such a tuning would relate to itself. If you do, be sure to let me know, I'd love to hear it.
What's your opinion about someone learning guitar from scratch with a 5 string and this tuning? In my case, I'm older, and it would only be for my personal amusement; I have no aspirations of ever playing for anyone else-- just something to finally explore music a bit before I die. I had already watched the video with Paul Davids and Jacobs Collier (which is presumably why RUclips put your video on my home page) and thought that it sounded easier to get immediate results, which IMHO is important for someone like me-- I have ADHD, and a little bit of success goes a long way in keeping me interested. But I'm also aware that I'm easily swayed by charismatic people (unless it's an area that I'm so competent/experienced in that I have my own opinions already fixed), so I could easily imagine that using such a non-standard instrument/tuning would just mean that I'm cutting myself off from the overwhelming amount of free instructional material that's available for more standard fare. I don't necessarily expect you to feel certain that you know the right answer, but I would value your opinion.
hey there! thats a good question...i guess it depends what you want, if you wanna learn existing songs and play along with them, the 5-string tuning is probably not a good idea (unless you have really good theoretical music knowledge from another instrument and can transcribe easily to this tuning). also there are obviously way more learning resources for standard tuning... i think on the 5 string tuning it's maybe a little bit easier to come up with sophisticated things, so if you just wanna play around for yourself it's maybe an option but i think standard is the safer way to go. cause if you really start from 0 you will have the same struggles that all beginners have anyway (finger coordination, fretting down the notes...), regardless of the tuning...unfortunately there is no way around it, we all have to go through this! ;) so idk, i'd probably start on standard tuning and learn some basics, and then you can peek into the 5 string tuning anytime and see if you like it... hope this helps and good luck with learning, just be patient and you'll get there for sure! :)
I often use DADDAD tuning, with those two strings in the middle tuned in unison. Because every string is tuned to either the root or the 5th, it's really easy to play but it's also limiting. It's not a Major chord or a Minor chord. It's more of a powered 5th chord. Having six strings for open tunings like this is kind of annoying to me. It traps you in major or minor voicings depending on how you tune that G string. My solution to this was the powered 5th tuning, which isn't elegant but it works. So Jacob only playing on five strings makes a lot of sense. You've got two octaves of the root, two octaves of the 5th, and that last string lets you add some major/minor flavors to it. I'm going to try it out!
My kids found it hard to play barre chords on the standard 6string guitar. After watching Jacobs interview I decided to give it a try. I can say it is indeed a little easier for beginners. To play a barre chord you just need only one extra finger for simple minor and major chords. Plus tension is lower due to 5 strings vs 6. Also with my setup all strings are tuned lower: 1 E down to 1 D , 2 B down to 2 A,3 G down to 3 E, 5 A is new 4 A, and 6 E became 5 D

I watched a SRV video and it was "mind opening" and then i realized other people had similar styles and after i learned how to play it wasn't so mind opening so i guess it just depends on a persons perspective. as to your youtube winning a debate or something, i have no idea what you are talking about.

This is similar to a tuning that Joni Mitchell used on a few songs . My Secret place and ‘they kiss on Main Street. Hers is CGDFGC

I used a symmetric tuning similar to this back in 2013 or 2014, and it's never quite left me. =)
