  • 2021 was a Christmas I will never forget.
One of the bigger things I remember from riding in the back of an ambulance to the rehab center was wondering if I would be home for the holidays that were coming up. I was trying to accept the reality that it was unlikely I'd be home for Halloween ... but what about my birthday? Thanksgiving? I knew for sure I was going to do everything I could to make sure I got home for Christmas.
I'll be home for Christmas was written during WW2. I wonder how my great grandpa must have felt when he heard that song. Did someone play it for them while they were overseas? Did he feel extra determined to come home for the holidays knowing that he had just missed my Grandpa's birth? Would this song ever take him back to that time?
As fun and happy as the holidays can be, they often carry with them a lot of weight, particularly for the family that can't be there or are no longer with us that we miss beyond words. Tragic events around the holidays are common as well. The joy of the holidays wind up all the more depressing after you experience loss.
I'm so thankful that I did get to be there for that Christmas in 2021. My wife and I both will always remember the day we decorated the tree and she let me hang the last ornament. I hobbled over on my walker and carefully and slowly and weakly lifted it onto the branch. Then I hobbled over under the mistletoe to kiss her.
I put this video together to capture those feelings I had that I think a lot of people relate to over the holidays. This video was record from the rearview of a driver near where the ambulance took me. Big shoutout to Edwin Padilla for helping me add his cello to this recording! So beautiful and meaningful that he helped me with this.

You sound good. I don't know why, but I listened and looked at the whole video. So, you must have done something right.
