  • Geoscientist Andrea Kaim analyses the conflicting goals that can arise during the agricultural transition, the transformation of agriculture towards more multifunctionality. Agricultural landscapes are multifunctional if they provide as many ecosystem services as possible - such as food production, clean water, habitat for species or cultural ecosystem services such as recreation. To this end, she brings together various research disciplines as part of the junior research group AgriScape, which she heads: With the help of ecological models and mathematical optimisation, conflicting management goals are identified and optimal spatial distributions of management practices that maximise ecosystem services are determined. The results will be combined with social science research, e.g. on farmer behaviour, to develop appropriate policy measures on how to deal with the trade-offs and implement practices that promote multifunctionality.
