I can't believe Hobie let their patent run out on their 1st gen drive system. Now everybody has that drive, Academy, Pelican, Hoodoo Sports, Vibe Kayaks & others - You can get a good deal anywhere nowadays!
I'm the first purchaser! I think so, anyway. At the Seattle boat show I fell in love with the Mirage drive. I begged them to sell me one of the seven fiberglass prototypes, and I almost got one! But they were all spoken for, so I had to wait for the first production run. Over the years I've acquired a fleet.
True our pedal drive did need to be reversed to work in reverse, that is until about a month ago when we launched the new MirageDrive180 with directional shifters, much faster and easier now!
i purchase a hobie 2016 outback kayak. from Delaware paddlesports. my kayak came up with a defect from factory. file a warranty claim. still waiting. i suggest to look at the pdl with pedals too. hobie has to many defects and everything breaks. never again will i buy a hobie product.
Go to your Hobie dealer. Join Hobie Forum. They should help you. The first hull I bought was awesome. Nice color and clear coat. Exchanged it, as the bar for a as was installed crooked. The second hull was dull and seemed faded in areas. The rudder was a little crooked.
The hull might be rotomolded and assembled in US but everything else is made in china. The whole made in the US thing is a marketing ploy, companies can legally claim "made in the US" just by installing one part while state side. Pad eyes, rails, hatches all made in china, seat clearly has a tag on it saying "made in the Philippines" accessories like the cart are clearly stamped "made in china". The only reason Hobie makes the hulls in the US is simply because of shipping costs. Harsh reality to all those going "oh it costs more because of quality", Yeah no. It costs more because they have monopoly on the 180/360 drive patent.

How come they never got into windsurfing?
We are making a new series called, "Making It In The USA" coming Winter 2012

+dustinm27 haha, thats funny!
Dustin Mayard it is
Nice but no need to charge 3 grand for a plastic boat
The downside, reverse requires the pedal to be reversed. And if your mold in decals are rubbing off from the powder there is a problem lol.

nice.
that will add alot of convenience.
now they have the 360 drive which is even better!

Hobie is way overpriced junk.
They sold 150000 little boats so I would call Hobie a success. The right product at the right time.
