As a Finn I have to correct, that we didn't defeat the Soviet Union in the Winter war 1939 - 1940. We lost after a bloody and resiliant fight and have to give awayy 10.5% or our territory. About 420000 Finns, who had lived in those areas, which were to be given to the Soviet Union, moved to the other parts of Finland, including my father and his parents. But our path was still a more easier one than what the three Baltic countries had to go through in 1939 - 1991.

This is not a very acute comparison. Ukraine was a part of the USSR unlike Finland. Finland was a capitalist country for the entirety of the cold war. Finlandization meant neutrality in the cold war, but at the cost of not publicly criticizing the USSR. "Denazification and demilitarization" clearly means an intent to occupy Ukraine, change its government and either annex it or turn it into a Warsaw pact -like puppet like Belarus.
It only has the fact it’s winning through attrition, in a war in which the longer it goes on the more the pendulum swings in Russia’s favour, Russia is recruit tens of thrusts of troops every month, Ukraine has a manpower shortage and has resulted to dragging men from the street. Russias economy is growing faster than the G7, and in terms of arms and munitions outproducing Europe and America combined. Its influence in Africa and Latin America is growing. Europe wants the war to end as do Americans, but Russia is in it to win. Sending Ukraine these weapons has only had one effect. It has shows the western weapons aren’t going to have the impact we thought in an open war. Russias military is much larger than it was pre war. The war isn’t weakening them, it’s making them more dangerous. Because only a fool would think a nation that threw millions to their deaths in within living memory would be weakened by this war.

The latter was multiethnic and focused on maintaining the status quo; today’s Russia is nationalistic, and the survival of its political system dependent on expansion. Moreover, the Soviet Union’s offers were offers you could count on, but how would you know if Putin’s offers are sincere, and, if sincere, for how long until the next attack?

People there are of albanese ethnicity in there large majority and wanted autonomy and Serbia under Melosovic was going to engage in another ethnic warfare as in Bosnia, what needed to be stopped. There are now parallels with the Ukrainian situation, as people in the Donbas never engaged in a genuine separatist movement. I mean even the current Ukrainian president ist a Russian speaker.
