    WOW. I can't believe how clear and concise your instructions are. As a feeble geezer, I could never get a custom route set up. I ride on least traveled roads and like to plan my routes. I have been using Google maps and printing up routes on paper & taping to my tank bag in spite of having a Garmin GPS. Now I am FREE. I can set up my own personalized and quirky routes and listen through earbuds without taking my eyes off the road. ROADKILL, my 1981 Suzuki GS 850G, & I thank you from the bottom of our crankcases.

    Excellent work Kev, been struggling with Basecamp for ages. You've broken it right down into bight size pieces. Thanks for taking the time to prepare an excellent presentation.

    Entirely agree that after reviewing a dozen other videos yours was the first useful one. I can't understand why some of the other dudes will spend an hour scrolling through Basecamo or Zumo menus. Who needs that? Having said that why don't you get yourself a good bike like a BMW or a Honda? Okay joke, sorry, had to be said. Many thanks!

    Brilliant Kevin, just been touring Spain on routes I worked out on Basecamp during the winter. But the minute I started each day Garmin rerouted immediately. I was also close to smashing up the £700 BMW Navigator VI on the roadside. Your answer about too big a gap in waypoints makes total sense.........you have saved my Garmin.

      yes I had been there before myself and know the frustration when it starts to tell you to take a highway or another road that you had not planned. I am jealous...touring Spain sounds like a great trip!!

    Many thanks for this. Your video is clear, concise and accurate, in great contrast to the BaseCamp manual. It worked perfectly for me the first time.

    I use the Harley Ride Planner with some success and disgust. Can you locate gas stations in the Basecamp application? Are they identifiable on the gui? If you use the ride planner and select a location (gas stop, hotel or food) it breaks the ride into segments. This treats your location stop as the end and you have to load the next segment. If you have a gas stop as part of your route but decide not to stop there you have to load the next segment as the ride planner treats locations as end of the route. So, can you depict restaurants and gas stations as separate items other than waypoints. I see that you are local... So am I.

    My BaseCamp maps and icons look different? I wonder if I have a newer version of the mapping software. Purchased a Garmin Zumo XT in 2021.

  • @MrHPT3
    @MrHPT3 5 лет назад

    Basecamp software is awful. I struggled with it for years. I got so angry at my $700 Garmin I smashed it on the side of the road. I haven't regretted it once. Your tutorial looks easy and I made a long trip in that same fashion before destroying the GPS. The software said I created too many way-points and wouldn't allow me to save it.

    On a newer Nuvi, how do you access and use the routes created and transferred in Base Camp?

  • @kawman6

    How come your map looks so much better ? With my gps hooked up it still looks so generic.

    • @kevinpeterson3956
      @kevinpeterson3956  6 лет назад

      I think when you connect your GPS, at the top if you click on Maps you can select your GPS. The maps on the screen should be more detailed.

    So you upload the GPX file to your Harley infotainment?

  • @emiloles9873
    @emiloles9873 6 лет назад

    Thank you Kevin please if you happen to select you route and it's the wrong way is deleting it only done by the undo button

    • @kevinpeterson3956
      @kevinpeterson3956  6 лет назад

      you can use the undo button to remove a section of the route, from one way point to the previous one.

  • @SmallSpoonBrigade
    @SmallSpoonBrigade 4 года назад

    One of the dumbest things about the software is that you can't export a GPX file and have it use that for the route that a trip follows. Would save so much time, but it doesn't appear to be possible, you have to create the trip and then either do like you're doing here and manually create it, or allow it to create the route and then drag things around.

    • @kevinpeterson3956
      @kevinpeterson3956  4 года назад

      I am not 100% positive but that this program might do that. There will be a small pop up window when starting out creating a route where it asks for the starting point and the ending point. I like the ability to decide the route from start to finish.

    this is the most difficult mapping I've tried and still can not create a route give me google maps anytime easy to use and understand

  • @hugodapalma
    @hugodapalma 5 лет назад

    The real problem is when you start your route, the GPS recalculates another route that has nothing to do with what you've planned.

    • @kevinpeterson3956
      @kevinpeterson3956  5 лет назад

      that can happen if you have the way points far apart. then the gps uses the settings you have for routing such as "fastest" or "scenic" , etc. But during this time it is still trying to get you to your next waypoint but yes it might not be the route you intended. Try dropping more waypoints.

    • @BadPaul33
      @BadPaul33 4 года назад

      May I also suggest that the settings in BaseCamp should match the settings on your GPS, regarding route preferences. (shortest distance/fastest time)

    Mac version is so much worse than Windows and that isn't exactly modern software. Mac version lacks major route editing tools which make is unusable for me. Have to switch computers when route planning. Poor work, Garmin.

      thanks. with a current garmin map to use the basecamp works well for me. Not sure about the windows version as I have not used it so not sure what I am missing .
