WARNING: This process calls for the use of Sodium Hydroxide - NaOH (also known as Lye). Lye is caustic and can burn skin on contact!! Use only with rubber gloves and goggles for eye protection. In the event of contact, flush with water immediately. Once this chemical reacts with our oils, it starts the process of saponification. More info at en.wikipedia.o...
WARNING: Do NOT use any aluminum pots or tools when using lye as it results in a potentially poisonous gas!!
WARNING: Always add Lye to water in small quantities, in that order. NEVER add water to lye crystals.

I have watched dozens of videos on cold process soap making, and this is the first time I've actually understood that soap calc, thank you so very much.
Thanks for watching Shelly!
Nothing fancy, no click bait, no 40 mins talk about random shit
Clear, fast instructions
I just made my first batch! Hopefully it turns ok!
Thanks brother
Thank you for the kind words!
I loved this EASY, CONSICE, and CLEAR Tutorial! Thanks so much for your time!
Thanks a million. You’ve explained so much and provided assistance that other channels won’t provide. Thanks again, and I’ll be checking for more vids!
Thanks a lot, especially explaining soap calc because everyone else had me lost
Thanks for watching. Good luck on your soap!
Hi John, I’ve been trying to understand the ‘soap calculator’ and the way you explained it was a great help...thank you 😊
Best I have seen so far calm and reassuring video no fancy ingredients straight to the point great for newbies that are concerned about cp soaping as I am thank you well done xx from uk
Easy to follow video - thanks. Appreciated the soap calculator explained.
Thank you for this video. Clear, concise, and to the point.
thank you for explaining everything thoroughly.
Thank you for a simple yet detailed video about how to make soap. I have been researching and researching and I am ready to make my first batch, but I couldn’t find a good recipe to begin with. THANK You! I will be using this recipe along with soap calc.
Thanks very straight to the point
Great Video. It is the best is explaining how to make the soap.
Thank you for all of the information.Ilove how you explained everything.
Thanks for the feedback Wanda!
Wow your advice was truly useful. Thank You for this tutorial.
ty for this video with step by step instructions on how to make cold process soap.
Great video! Been looking for a video that explains the basics and you nailed it.
Thank you for the kind words!
Thank you sir.........................
Thanks! great video-easy to understand..especially the calculator part.
Thank you so much this was a great recipe. I was able to understand this.
that is very cool soap you doing
Thank you!
He used tap water. It's better to use distilled water because the lye can react to the compounds in tap water. Distilled water is purified of those contaminants.
Your video is the best I've saw on you tube thank you
Thank you for your very kind comment!
Thank you john...great video
Great class
how does this compare to Dial or Zest or coast? this is a pretty good video. you're the fist to mention the reaction with aluminum . and the first I've seen that showed that soapcalc.. i say you do and updated video
The homemade soaps in my opinion are better than the store bought ones but they are consumed much more quickly and cost much more. I love how we as makers can experiment and control the ingredients. My skin is sensitive so I never add fragrances for stuff I will use and not gift away to others
Really good video and easy to understand. 👍
Thank you!
What a great video this was extremely helpful in understanding the process. I have a question when it comes to the super fats calculation what is that?
Super fats is the left over fats that are not consumed by the lye to make the soap. Generally people allow for 5-10% extra fat (super fat) to make the soap more moisturizing. But the more fat you put in the greater chance the bar can go rancid over time, so you don't want to go beyond the guidelines in general.
@@JohnsDIYPlayground thank you so much for explaining that. I've asked so many people. ❤️
You're welcome! Thanks for asking, it was a great question and an important one for soap makers
@@JohnsDIYPlayground a follow up question. Will the super fat percent then depend on the amount of lye used when making the soap? I see fats as in fats from the butters and oil... Is that the correct understanding? I've been really interesting in making soap for years but never have because I found it confusing with unanswered questions so this has me motivated to try
@@jessicadygos8582 different butters and oils have different fat percentages. That is what makes the soap calculator so useful. You can use a recipe from someone else or modify it to make it your own and get the super fats where you like them. It takes a lot of time of course to try a wide range of oils and how much % to super fat but in the end you will have what is custom made for you
I make soap and I luv to watch soaping videos. I know you were keeping it simple but u don’t need to blend it that much. I know u didn’t add colorant or do any layers or pours but mixing it that much isn’t needed and gel phase doesn’t take 3 days and ur not supposed to keep it in a cool place ur supposed to over it and then insulate it to keep the heat in and after 24-18 hrs u unmold it and cut it. I’ve never seen anyone refrigerate there cp soap at all let alone 3 days. Even w a plain natural soap. So did it come out ok?
Yes, it was ok. I’ve experimented using towels and cooler method too. I found the fridge works good for soaps with a sugar in them (like honey). It helps slow down the reaction and reduces any ash forming on the soap loaf. Thanks for the tip on the mixing!
Great video, I'm excited to try! As far as cleaning the container with lye water....I believe you said just run it under water for a while? Anything else you recommend? I'm more worried about the cleaning portion than actually making the lye water. Thanks!
Use glass bowls for the lye water, never use aluminum. Good luck and have fun!
New subscriber here, great video.
How do you choose which oils to use and at what proportions of each? And how do you know how much fragrance or essential oils to use? I’m just not following how to decide those things to put into the soap calculator. Thanks!!
Initially I was just using recipes other people posted with simple ingredients, no colors or fragrances. Then in subsequent batches I started to add that stuff in and also experimented with the soap calculator. Have fun! I would start with olive oil and coconut oils as a base.
Is this the same caustic soda we use in toilet blockage?
Yes, it is!
Hi John :) I like your technique for making soap :)
What was the temperature of the lye water and what was the temp of the oils right before you start mixing/blending them? Thanks!
Hi! In my video around the 10:09 mark I mention the lye water target temperature is 120 to 140 F. The oils are at room temperature when I add the lye water to them. Thanks for watching!
i need help i want to use ur msurments because its sounds what i want for my soaps but im adding other additives do i jus add what i feel is needed when it comes to scents and colors and stuff
Awesome soap love the video. If you don't want to use a fragrance will that do anything to the soap.
No, the fragrance can be left out of the recipe and the results will be the same
Hi again, came across the video again while looking for a creamy recipe, love this soap. Just want to know is it better to soap in a warm or cool space. My kitchen is quite warm when I soap and my trace seems to come out pretty thick.
Just FYI from someone who does hot process, it doesn't take several hours. A small 3 pound batch can take less than an hour.
That’s an awesome time saver! You must obviously like the results of the cold process?
@@JohnsDIYPlayground I think both have their good qualities. Haven't unmolded my first batch if cp yet, so still deciding. The people my husband sells to don't seem to mind the rustic homemade look of hp.
maybe whats missing is how it turn out to be? cutting? and how you pack it? but everything is explained perfectly! i have the same molder and just thinking how it would turn out to be without liners. thanks
+mike salamanque the silicone molds work great without liners. I cut with a wire wrapped around 2 screws that are mounted into a 2x6 board. When I give the soap away as gifts I have cardboard boxes I bought online, otherwise I store the soaps on a wire rack (for air circulation)

Hi I’m new to soap making but I want to know why does the oils not blend well ? I would go back to check my soap in the morning and the oils is on the top of my soap
It sounds like if you’re getting soap with oil on top you might have too much oil in you’re recipe or not blending well enough. Did you get the mixture to show trace before stopping the mixing step? I’ve not had the leftover oil problem. Some recipes call for “super fat” which increases the amount of oil in a recipe but generally not by more than 5%
About superfats www.thesprucecrafts.com/superfatting-in-soap-making-517095
I used the website called: soapcalc to make it but it seem like it was trading
Great video. You da man!. Every other video skips the measurements.
I thought both the oils and the lye had to be at 80-85 degree. When your oils are at 84 degree and the lye at 132 degree .. is that what made the trace happen sooner?
Yes if the temperature is higher then the trace will happen quicker
Hey John just watched your video twice well maybe three times and rewind 100 gazillion times isn’t three days too long for a cut? Won’t it be too hard. Just made this recipe only used 25 grams of fragrance keeping fingers crossed that it will be enough
Really depends on the soap. Some loafs stay soft a very long time.
@@JohnsDIYPlayground ☺️ thank mine was good to cut 24 hrs now I wait! First loaf excited
Where can I get lye n coloring for the soap n the oils
Try wholesale supplies plus dot com
hi John, when I am adding lye to neem oil base slowly, the mixture looks like it is curdling or setting super fast, what could be the reason.
It depends on your recipe. If you have any sugars in your oils (like honey) this will really accelerate the reaction time.
Please is the oil going to heat?
It gets hot when mixed with the lye water, yes.
Did you use distilled water or tap water?
Great question! I’m using tap water for my soap making. I don’t think distilled would matter unless perhaps you had well water. I’m on a city fed water line.
Hi I have a question my soaps got a she is anyway to avoid that
Ash is typically caused if the soap is too hot after mixing the oil and lye. Two ways to reduce or eliminate is 1) let the lye water cool down longer before mixing with the oil and 2) put the soap in the freezer right after adding to the soap mold for at least 30 minutes, then cool at room temp or in the fridge
Also if your recipe has any sugar you can get the ash result due to the hot chemical reaction
@@JohnsDIYPlayground Okey thanks
I wish there were more videos about making shampoo bars. I assume it's a similar process as soap.
Waverley Terlizzi it is not.
I have made cucumber soap today
It sounds awesome. Share the recipe here or link to it if you can. I'm interested!
Teach us how to make cream 🥰
I hope your soap turned out correctly, I noticed you didn't tare your scale when measuring your lye. It appeared you had the weight of the container included. 🤔 I've also read tons of cold process tutorials and they all say the lye water and oil solution should be within 10 degrees of one another before combining them. I like your method better but it makes me wonder if the others are all wrong. I'm new at soap making so I want the easiest way that makes a great bar of soap. Insight ?
@Rhonda Maner you are paying great attention to detail! Around 7:45 in the video when I make that quick video cut, I actually did not show the part when I did tare up the scale before measuring the lye. My video is not so great in this particular shot since the container is white and the lye is white... it's very difficult to see when I start that shot that I already have 100g of lye in that measuring bowl.
@Rhonda Maner I've always used the 120-140 F temperature for the lye to pitch it in with the oils. It's never been a problem for me. Happy soaping!!
Actually, Rhonda, I use the heat transfer method, I have put away my digital heat gun and only use this method. I put my hard oils/butters in one bowl, liquid oils in another, and mix my lye water (with sugar and salt) in another. I mix the lye water and immediately pour it over the hard oils - the heat transfers to the butters and melts them. I then add in the liquid oils and continue from there.

where can i buy lye? can you tell me website?
This is what I use, it's available at Amazon amzn.to/2JDDXeW
How do you get your name on the soap?
I did that using a laser engraver after the soap was hardened
Preparing to make my first cold process soap , very easy to understand I'm gonna use this recipe. One question does this recipe fits a 44oz. Mold? thank you 🧼❤️
The mold is Crafter’s Choice regular loaf mold 1501. It does hold up to 44 ounces per the manufacturer’s website.
Good luck on your first cold process soap!
@@JohnsDIYPlayground ok thank you
Hi John,, I try's to do this recipe but it didn't work😩😩
what do you mean? Try being detailed.
I went in a mega store looking for lye.
Asked an employee as I wasn't finding.
Looked at me funny and told me its a "controlled substance".
Wtf stupid country.
+TheKetsa yes finding lye at retail stores is nearly impossible. You might try Amazon or www.essentialdepot.com/
This is a close up pic of the stuff I use flic.kr/p/PqMu5Z
Thanks.
OMG! Toooooo much talking. Bye!
So what your saying is I don’t need soap base😅
