To the Australian team. We are not trolling or being keyboard warriors. She was not break dancing. That event was not an artistic interpretation competition it was a break dancing competition which means everybody that was watching and the judges that was present was expecting to see strong break dancing moves not a grown woman rolling on the floor.

2:47 “deep understanding of the cultural significance of breaking” - the gaslighting is INSANE 🤡

    • @jenniferhanses
      @jenniferhanses 2 месяца назад +31

Indeed. If she were an actual academic, she would have to include competitiveness and an understanding of it in her studies of the art form (I am not an academic specializing in breakdancing, but I do specialize in the arts). If an art is born of competition (in this case for admirers and street cred), then you can't just go "I don't care about the competition aspect of it." That would mean you were unable to properly understand the dance or the community that created it, which are apparently her fields of study.

@@jenniferhansesespecially if you’re bringing it outside of the classroom and to the literal olympics 😭 like idc how artistic the medium is if you’re gonna take it to the olympics and represent your entire country you HAVE to show a certain level of technical proficiency, the fact she said she went in saying she wasn’t gonna beat anyone is a MASSIVE problem.
doubly so when you consider she is a white woman using a black art form and going about it in this way, all while being empowered to do so by whoever in the australian olympic team is deciding who represents them. bc they must think we’re drop dead stupid if they want us to believe SHE was the best of the best of what the australian breakdancing scene had to offer. SHE IS NOT EVEN A BREAKDANCER BY HER OWN ADMISSION.
if you made up your own form of breakdancing that has little to basis in any of the actual fundamentals of it then cool, keep it out of the olympics and don’t take the spot of someone who actually took the time, care, and effort to learn the craft of it and engages in the competition aspect. she expects an A for effort after blatantly and knowingly ignoring everything in a culture she is a visitor in on so many levels, it’s crazy.

    • @JulianneNA

You don’t toddler-praise an Olympic competitor on grounds of “they did their best, that’s all that matters.” She took the seat of other highly skilled candidates who all wanted a shot to make it to a global level. It’s the “best of the best” chosen by a country as their global representation, not your soccer mom’s summer tryouts for the first graders. I’ve yet to hear from a single Australian who loves this for her and her country. But I’ve sure met Aussies who think otherwise.

In the land of sun and kangaroo charm,
Where the Great Barrier Reef spreads its calm,
Lived Raygun, a dancer with moves so fine,
That even the koalas would stand in line.
But Raygun had dreams of a global stage,
The Paris Olympics, the next big page,
Raygun’s moves could make the dingoes swoon,
Her talent was as bright as the Aussie full moon.
On the grand stage, she showcased her art,
The Wriggly Worm dazzled with a groovy start,
The Karate Kicking Kangaroo stole the show,
And the Floppy Fish made the crowd’s rapture grow.
The judges were stunned, the spectators amazed,
Raygun’s moves had the entire crowd dazed,
“It’s who you know, not how you dance” Plus she got two weeks holiday in France.

This wasn't breakdancing. The graceless twitching and somersaulting you find on a preschool playground could be considered artful in some circles, but it doesn't belong on the world stage in the breakdancing category. Not that I'd ever compare her uncoordinated twitching with the honest fumbling of a child; she ostensibly PRACTICED to do a fair imitation of the locomotion of someone recently hit by an 18 wheeler.
No physically demanding freezes. No windmills. No 1900s or 2000s. No flips or acrobatics or anything that takes a human physique beyond the boundaries of someone average's capability. It looks like something a 12 year old with 4 months of breakdancing classes would throw together to impress their parents. The fact that Australia had options and CHOSE this person as their global representative speaks volumes about how they want to be perceived.
