I’m year and a half in and watched this video back at the beginning. This helped me so much back then and helps more now as I prepare for my first competition.

I find a big challenge trying to change my mindset when switching back and forth between Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Because the clock plays a much bigger role in Judo (pins can win, so the clock starts as soon as someone gets side control and most referees are fairly quick to stand us up if we don't appear to be making any progress even if in a good position like guard or back mount), I have to be much less patient and more aggressive in Judo, whereas in Jiu Jitsu, I have to constantly remind myself to slow down and be patient.

If I had all of his skills, I would still send my kid to his class. Best money I've spent

I feel like there are 2 competing philosophies that contradict each other when it comes to being stuck on bottom. The first school of thought is to relax and breathe (like we just heard). The other philosophy is, you have to escape. I feel like the more competitive schools preach the second philosophy. It is not easy being stuck on bottom, and I am all for relaxing and breathing during a match, but sooner or later you have to try to get out.

@@ropongi1008 I agree with you. I guess the timing of deciding when we’ll move will be different for everyone. Best with your practice.

Ground game require more cardio. But still the first thing is how to escape first and learn cardio from it. Just like swiming. The first lesson is how to float, and have cardio when we learn more about swimming.

The best lesson I ever taught a woman was the hug! That's the core you will see in all jujitsu. Competition. The hook's around the person in mount. Just hold that position. Don't do anything fancy. Everyone studied those fight's of me and Eve, in a tournament. She lost but. It is the basic move to go to. You don't win but ( you don't lose your life ) if you get the concept. Just hold that position. Also don't let them get your wrists. Make them hold your weight if they try to escape. Hug them to death. It's easier to get, just hold that position in guard. Once they get it they will always go too it.

This is huge for me. But it also seems to be the *opposite* of what I'm told at my gym. They used the analogy "if you're on the bottom you're drowning." They told new white belts to imagine that they were under a foot of water and they needed to get out to breathe. I think that this concept has it's place but sometimes you cant get out. A 90 lbs. woman can't force her way out from under a man that's 6 ft 2 in. and 240 lbs. Is there a happy balance between these two concepts coach?

Have you ever been in the ocean and stuck under a wave crashing down onto you? Then when you try to surface another wave comes and pushes you back down to the sand. Again, you try to stand and another wave crashes before you can get a breath. You're drowning. Literally. You're using all of your energy. What should you do? When the first wave crashes, stay under the water and relax a moment. The rest of the wave set will crash, and you will have an opportunity to surface in the lull.
Now apply this to side control. Breathe. Wait for your opponent to move to attack, then you can "surface for air."

    100% million % agree.
I had someone ask me 25 years ago had a girl ask me "what happens if your in this position" it was when a she is on the ground and the person is on her back but to the side!"
I said well let me get in that position, I got down and then I said to him "omg your so sexy!! could just turn around a little and see you eyes?" when I did that it caught him off guard and wala.... that was the moment!! Patience is really important.... wait, relax, and train for the moment to catch that moment :)
