  • If you are handy with tools you can probably fit a simple tow bar. However, there are some peculiarities of how to do so with different makes and models of cars. This demonstration is for how to fit a towbar to a Hyundai i30 2013 GD (diesel). The rear end of other Korean and Japanese small car models of similar age will have similar construction features, so this video should help with other vehicle makes and models too.
Please note this this fitment is for everyday light trailer use. If you intend to be towing caravans or commercial loads you should have the towbar professionally fitted.

Haha! Yes it is a moderately involved job that took several hours. Should you do it? It depends how versatile one wants their i30 to be. I still have my i30 and it has clicked over 280K and still going strong, so well worth the effort for me. Others change their cars more regularly so not really worth it if you don't plan to get at least a few years out of it. I'd encourage you to have a go at yours. It is certainly doable and give you a sense of satisfaction.

@@jonono63 I have a 2018 accent and I'm I little worried about breaking it if I try. I plan on keeping it until it dies. Ok... I might have to watch again before making a decision.

@@sarcasmo57 I was initially worried about pulling off the rear bumper, but it is very durable and flexible and wont break. I would have no hesitation about pulling it off now. Similarly the tail lights seemed like they might break on removal, but if you watch my video at that section you will be fine as long as you remove all the bolt and pull it in the correct direction. A 2018 model should come off even easier. I'm not sure the Accent is completely the same, but should be almost identical. All the best with whatever you decide.

I bought a Melbourne made Hayman & Reece at Salisbury towbars in SA & they fitted it. I hired a 7x4 caged mechanically braked 4 wheels caged.
6 trips, I bought a house 200 km from Adelaide.
I surprised how well & stable my petrol i30 6 speed manual tows.
5 th gear cruise control a 100 kmh.
    Very stable.
I bought a second-hand 6x4 deep trailer, second hand, new condition for $1500.00 & it's garaged so it won't rust.

Couldn't agree more regarding the i30. Sits on the road like a sports car (mine running 19s and low profile Bridgestones) but will pull a trailer like a big six. Mine just clicking over 255K and everything still works, still original.

@jongoessling1245 Mines, a gd active base model, I got a full sized tire for the boot. Mines stock, I set it up for touring.
Rhino roof racks a custom-made aluminium checkers plate roof box
100 watt solar panel attached to the lid, a wedge shape at the front, a light bar single row mounted on the under side of the front Rhino rack
You can see roof pop their heads above bushes as night at a greater distance.
A one hundred amp hr life po 4 powered battery box strapped in the boot & a 2 L Waeko analog fridge freezer wedged in behind the driver seat as I'm short & have the room.

I might agree. However, I like to learn new things and like the convenience of using it for a trailer. The i30 diesel is such a versatile car I figured the towbar would only make it more so. And it is :)

Thank you so much for your well explained video. I've got the diesel i30 also and wanting to be able to tow a small cage trailer occasionally. Can you please explain why you had to run the green wire inside the boot space? Was that so you could hook up the plug for the trailer lights? Did you happen to do a video on that as well?

    • @jonono63
      @jonono63  5 месяцев назад +1

Hi Taneeker. Unfortunately I did not make a video of the wiring of the trailer plug, but yes the green wire was to access the right hand blinker for the trailer. All the other trailer wires (lights and brake lights and left blinker) can be wired from the one (left) side. If you take a still of the video at 14:08 you can see which wires I spliced the trailer plug to). Sorry it is not clearer on the video.

Great video, but just something that sort of jumped out, as an engineer, in the building blocks of learning it was always explained that the ONLY TIME you put a Bolt in upside down was because there was no room to install it the correct way ie Always Facing Downwards in case the nut became loose and if you had no option but to install upwards then ALWAYS install a Lock Nut, see 9.17
I have to say that having watched the video it soon became apparent that it was a pretty skilled job and not one for me, I would be just to scared of scratching my rear panel or snapping off the fixings.

Thanks for the comments. Your bolt suggestion was a good idea and I should have used a lock nut. Regarding doing it yourself, I would encourage you to have a go. The rear skirt is quite durable and will not mark easily. However, I would ensure plenty of space, well lit, and probably higher than I had the rear. Ideally, a hoist.

@@n.granger1343 i30 diesel is an amazing car with gobs of torque. Will tow more than what the tow bar can safely handle. I tow a standard trailer interstate with a load and do not notice it. Would easily pull a small caravan but would need a more substantial tow bar than this one.
