I received his Learn to Draw kit for Christmas when I was just turning eight (1958). It was a completely unexpected present -- and for my parents, completely unexpected that I would even like it or use it. But I did, and how! I had already been watching his TV segments for quite a while and loved them. Years after the set was used up, I still had the little particle board "drawing board" and used it for writing outside or sitting on my bed. How seriously I did take it all!
This was my introduction to rendering a certain spatial kind of thinking into a representation that could really communicate, just like speech or writing is a way of representing other kinds of thoughts into language. That's just how important good drawing instruction is to early education and brain development. It's not just for professionals or artists, it's for humans who want to get their minds across to each other.
I loved watching this show when I was a young boy. I credit Jon Gnagy with helping me in my early days to becoming an artist. His lessons are the key fundamentals in drawing, and are just as relevant today. If you're interested in learning to draw, this is an excellent place to start. It was for me.
Jon was my dad's first cousin. I never met him but I feel like I grew up with him, hearing all of my aunts, uncles and my grandmother talk about him.
this brought back so many erstwhile inaccessible memories. thanks for posting.
Thanks Polly. I had his kit too when I was young. Shoulda stuck with it!
Ahhh! The good old days ... in the countryside to draw a flour mill, without a camera in sight.
I loved this show I used it a creative art therapist for years
Never will forget this show
I remember this episode from childhood .
...i used'ta watch him on Sundays (forget if it was late mornings or early afternoons) with my mom ca 1954 or so...
what a beard, what a voice, what a talent, what a man.
@SithRage Jon Gnagy didn't do illustrations, he did well rendered compositionally correct fine art drawings for the beginner. I am a certified instructor with the Joy of Painting Company. I knew Bob personally, and I can tell you that Bob held this man in highest regard and as a consequence, patterned his style after Gnagys'. Can't you see the uncanny similarity?
This is incredible
I'm so proud ! haha ... is he still a live ??
Correction SithRage.... This guy was a pioneer in art instruction on TV. Bob Ross as well as all the others are just copiers of this man.
