I’m from the US and spent about a year in Malaysia. Lived in KL and Penang. It’s my first choice in Asia to live. Love the cheap bus system. Shopping malls are massive and the Malaysians love to shop! Bookstores still exist in Malaysia unlike the US.

Cost of housing. Rental of 2 - 3 bedrooms apartment could cost not less than rm1.5k (mid range - a little outside the city centre) in KL. KL city centre is expensive.
Cheese is not cheap in Sarawak or Malaysia in general because they're "prime" goods which are imported.
Car fuel is cheap in Malaysia because in Malaysia it is subsidised.

I used to live in Den Haag in a tiny apartment. 50% of my monthly earnings were allocated to the apartment rental. luckily groceries are fairly cheap and would only cost me 10% of my salary. i used my fiets or tram to commute to work. I was able to have a generous amount of saving each month. In malaysia, 30% of my earning goes to my house commitment. i spend over 30% on groceries and dining out. i need to maintain a car to get to places. I would say living in malaysia is quite challenging in terms of financial for locals.

I totally agree with everything you said. Im from Scotland and moved to Malaysia in 2012, was first living in KL. As you said, almost everything is more expensive and then there is the traffic (that's a topic on its own) I then moved to my wife's home town in Ipoh, much more laid back and relatively cheaper than KL. I love the local people and food, my wife is an excellent cook as is her mother. Unfortunately with covid, life is Malaysia has changed considerably and even though I have a spouse visa I'm currently stuck in Scotland waiting for permission to come home. If your even in Ipoh please look me up.

Hi Nik, I really like your channel and I also like Kuching a lot. However, I was very puzzled that you compared rents in Kuching with rents in KL. Why? Surely it makes much more sense to compare rents with a provincial town similar to Kuching - say, for example, Melaka. According to my research Melaka rents and property purchase prices are considerably lower than in Kuching. In fact according to all the statistics I have seen Sarawak & Sabah property prices are about the highest in the whole of Malaysia - with the obvious and understandable exception of KL. Do you agree?

Some of these are even worse than being born in African countries, as at least Africa is not over populated. Hi, from history Malaysia is formed originally with west penisular (west malaysia), sabah, sarawak, singapore and brunei. Thats the original of malaysia before Singapore and Brunei left Malaysia.
As Kelantanese Malaysian, it is sad to see most of development concentrate it west malaysia especially city centre area, but i think it normal for any big cities around the world to be concentrate in city centre area as it more efficient to build and maintain big infrastructre in highly populated area. Population of east malaysia 5.5M which make out only 20% of malaysian population out of 32M. 1 out 4 malaysian live around Greater KL (KL, Selangor) which is estimated 8-10M.
Hopefully in future more development can be distribute evenly especialy wilayah Sabah, wilayah Sarawak, and other state Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah... Good to see in recent years Sabah and Sarwak teritory make a lot of progress.

State Land Laws are the problem. Any Malaysian from anywhere in Malaysia can buy and own land in the most developed states. The least developed ones have protectionist policies so people with money won't come. One can argue about this but why would anyone spend their money somewhere they can't own. However this does not apply to foreigners.
It is easier for a non-Malaysian to live in Sabah or Sarawak then 'Orang Malaya'. Kelantan has the same time land ownership restrictions. Change it and more investment will come. Argue about this, remain backwards.

Hi Nick, planning come down to semenyih with my Malaysian wifey and kiddo. Currently we live abroad and would like to come back there to settle in. Biggest fear: post COVID job market for foreigners (european) and international schooling cost (I know we already have a choice and go for local schools) to sustain that.

    • @GlobalGibbon
      @GlobalGibbon  2 года назад +2

Hey there! Thanks for your comment. I personally don't think there is going to be much difference for job opportunities in the future compared to before covid. It's always a bit tricky to get a job as a European in Malaysia, unless you have specific skills. This will still apply and companies would hire if you're the right fit.
International schooling fees here in Kuching go between 500 and 2500 per month I believe. This depends on the school and your kid's age. There are various affordable options, even for international schools.

Alcohol is pretty expensive here in Malaysia. A standard bottle (let's say Absolute or Smirnoff) would sell for about MYR 160 (about 40USD). However, here in Sarawak you can find smuggled bottles without tax at about MYR 40-50. A draught beer could cost about MYR 14-20 (4USD) at a bar. There are still some small coffeeshops that would sell smuggled beer for MYR 10, for 3 cans (USD 2.5). So if you know where to look, you can save a lot!

      Heya!
You can ship your car from KL to Sabah, no problem. Try search for some shipping agents. I believe the cost is about 1000-2000 MYR. Not too sure though!
The spouse visa is only valid for a Non-Malaysia married to a Malaysian. Various documents need to be produced in order to apply (marriage certificate, birth certificate, proof that the foreigner has not been married before, police report of Good Behaviour from home country, and a deposit of MYR 1200 I believe, and some other documents).
