I have sold and given away so many things over the years... I really paired my collection down last year, I sold like 6k worth of games. I honestly couldn't tell you what half of them were. I am still rocking a switch I got from FB market, one of the best systems ever made! I'd rather pass stuff on to people who will actually play it and enjoy it. Keep up the awesome work, this is the most chill

Tons of good points, I am 100% in your corner on avoiding the time/hassle of selling online. I get the extra cash, but in the end, I just don't care. Plus, I like the thought that when I found the games on a store shelf, I was thrilled, and hopefully someone else is when they see it on a new shelf. There's nothing better than new inventory at a game store, and it's fun to contribute to that.

I got the Xbox 360 controller, Collector John! I bought an Xbox 360 recently again, and it was my childhood console. I do a little collecting, and love new in box items. My girlfriend and I went to the store as we always do pretty much every weekend, and we saw this controller because she needed one so we could play two player Xbox 360 games. We decided to buy a used controller, because the thought of opening a brand new Xbox 360 controller would feel mega bad lol. We decided it against it, but I absolutely loved it. A week later, my girlfriend visited the store herself, and picked it up for me and surprised me with it. I absolutely love this controller, and I love the memories I have had with the controllers and consoles. It was a large part of my teenage years, and I have enjoyed reliving them recently. Steve told me that you sold it to them, and referred me here! I absolutely love Game Together MKE.
Thanks for the controller John, everytime I walk into my game room it reminds me of my teenage years and my girlfriend. I appreciate it.

I too have been downsizing my game collection but I'm much older than you. I have to say that the retro game store near me has an unfortunate reputation for how customers are treated. But I do give games to thrift stores and especially enjoyed giving some games to my local library for their Friends of the Library book sale. Could we all agree that more kindness and generosity in the gamer community would be a great vibe. As always, your videos are mellow, humorous and gamer friendly. Game on!

I personally like to keep my video game collection to only video games I genuinely enjoy. I like the idea of my shelves being a reflection of me; want someone to be able to look at my collection and get a genuine understanding of my likes and dislikes. That said, nostalgia messes that up a bit. I have a bunch of shit games I NEVER liked on my shelves, but I bought them or was gifted them as a kid, and they have been there so long now, I can’t bear to part with them.
Great vid as always, CJ. A really interesting discussion.

I think you are completely right about reselling. I also like the idea of not keeping stuff you aren't using, I think a lot of people just hold on to games they don't like because it might go up in value. If you don't like it and will not use it, best thing to do is put it back into the market for someone who does like it.

I literally just sold my whole OG Xbox collection today. I needed some extra money for housework, bills, and some PS5 stuff I wanted. It was hard at first seeing it all get packed up, but I wasn't playing my Xbox much anymore and I got a fair offer for all of it. I can always get them again later if I decide to down the road. At the end of the day, for me, it's just materialistic things, and I never stay attached to anything I own. I enjoy it while I have it and sell it when I need to or when I am done with it.

I think you made a fantastic decision. You obtained a system you wanted, you sold things you were not feeling anymore. I am very likely moving soon and as much as I would like to keep everything this might be an ideal time to pair down my video game and comic book collections. I guess pairing down books and dvds would be smart too, lol. There comes a time when holding onto things has diminishing returns. Hope you’re doing well and give me a shout if you ever want to come to Baltimore for some reason.

great vid John, really good topic in the collector world for sure. Recently had a similar conversation with myself and got rid of some stuff that I didn't love/need. this other youtuber Retro Bird who talks a lot about collecting helped me put into a unique perspective: my game collection/house is like a museum. every game I own (I don't have large collections, probably like 30 games max for one system, everything else much less) is a specifically curated piece, that holds value to me for some reason or another. it's totally okay to buy something and be let down by it, then let it go.

A few 64 games heavy in my collection, but otherwise it’s lean and regularly used. My bookshelf is the same way. “The books were few, but they were good, and rereading them meant finding new stories in them.” It’s true. Plus I don’t really experience paralysis of what to play.

I think that it can be good to keep things even if they no longer hold immediate value/emotion to you. So long as you can afford keeping it financially, space-wise, and mentally. I think throwing it in a tub, throwing it in a box and putting it away. Kind of letting yourself forget it, can be good. That joy and perhaps even utility you find later from still having it is usually worth it. Different strokes for everyone of course though.

New viewer! I have such a hard time parting with my collection. I honestly can't remember the last time I sold something part of my actual collection, but have no issues with people wanting to sell theri stuff. Seems common within any hobby. Have you ever thought about the Facebook route for selling? Hook a collector up with the same price the store will give ya instead of them having to pay over market value at most of the stores. I know it could be tough to possibly weed out the resellers, but if its quality stuff I'm sure a collector would love to have it at the prices a store would pay. Great video!

Completely agree with your approach to collecting. If I buy a game that looks interesting or cool and end up not really feeling it, I’m quick to let it go. I only have so much shelf space anyway lol
Also, hard agree on trading stuff to the LGS as opposed to selling on eBay . If you’re lucky enough, like you and I, to have a game store that offers really good trade credit, the difference in value is minimal, especially considering all the time and effort it takes to sell on eBay. Plus it’s cool to build those relationships and just hang out and talk games once in a while.

There’s nothing wrong with selling games out of your collection that you don’t like or just don’t want. I’ve changed my collecting habits to only collecting killer not filler. If i don’t want to play it or don’t really enjoy it I get rid of it. In order to get something i actually want to play and save a few bucks by trading them at my local retro store. Because they’re the only one close to me and the owner is a cool dude. And i want them to stay around. And i know it’s blasphemy but sometimes if they give a decent enough trade amount i trade at my local GameStop if they have something i want that the retro store doesn’t. Some people (not all) i think get worked up if you get rid of certain games even if they are rare but crappy. I don’t really consider them a true gamer. They only collect as a status symbol to say how much their collection is worth. Not actually caring about how much fun they can have playing them. Games are designed to be played and yes i still have some sealed but it’s usually because i either have doubles or just haven’t gotten to them yet. Because the backlog never ends. And I might check my collection and get rid of some to get myself a switch. Because Ive never gotten one and i want to play Bayonetta 2&3 and Astral Chain looks sweet.

I've had some Genesis games which were on the more expensive side, I tried them, hated them and shelved them. I held onto them because they had a growing price tag. I only got those games because because lots of other people said they were amazing, not personal picks by me. Anyhow I traded them into a game store and got a bunch of games I really do like playing using the store cred.
And I get what you said about the sealed controller. I have a boxed Dreamcast controller, not sealed, but it's never really been used (looks split new.) And there's this local retro store I know which has a sealed one, as well as a sealed Japanese VMU. But I don't see the point in buying them. It's not like I'm a Streamer who needs backdrop pieces to flex on their viewers.

I'm gonna honestly say that where do we set the bar between collecting and sickness? I purged my collection last year anything with a stealbook I bought and it just sat on the shelf. I sold my entire game collection last year, I also had CIB consoles PS1, PS2, Og XBOX, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE X, NintendoWii, Wii U. And I finally said to myself this is stupid, look at how much money is on this shelf that has no other reason to be there than other than be a complete console in Box. I had multiples of every console I had a setup in the garage stacked with Console incase I wanna game in the garage. Long story short I only kept my Xbox 360's and my PS5 and My Series S.

On a more productive note something like that controller I would sell on eBay. I don’t mind losing a couple bucks. on garbage games or games that I just don’t like but things of actual value really should go to eBay, but that’s just me.
Also, I’m notorious for trading in things I don’t really like and getting things I like even less!😅

Cool video John, I think your decision was wise and I appreciate you sharing it with us. Switches will drop in price a lot when the Switch 2 comes out next year, but a nice OLED will keep it's value more than a standard switch and all that matters is that you enjoy your decisions anyway
