Walter initially wrote a treatment that was too expensive, so the record company told him to drop the idea and come back with another one. He then remembered a short film he'd wanted to make at college about a man tring to walk down the street in a straight line. 'Luckily, it fitted in with the band,' he sayd. 'Richard Ashcroft said that he didn't want to do any acting and wanted to keep the filming very low-key and private - just him, me and the cameraman - so he wouldn't be embarrassed. He agreed to my idea, then, the next thing he knew, he was surrounded by loads and loads of people - the exact opposite of what he'd wanted.'

It really feels more bittersweet than the official version.
This versions feels dark, bitter, kind of confussing. It's still interesting to think about it. But the popular version give me a sense of hope.
actually this gives me hope. it isn't syrupy and sappy. he gets beaten down but he just keeps plugging on and all the blood vanishes and is replaced by his smile from within himself...he kept telling us how he wasn't going to change or be affected by all the jerks trying to distract him on his street walk...and they didn't ...he prevailed. that's hopeful to me...
@@ericpeterson6766 Yes, I get you. Bad things happened to him, he gets up and keep going. I liked that, It´s bittersweet. But then the location and the dark enviroment gives me a different vibe... maybe more bitter than its melody, In my opinion.
In most known video there is still a road to move forward. In this version I still dont get the dead end.

This is the more realistic treatment.
@JorgitoYokiro It's more hopeful, but to me it's not consistent with the lyrics. This was the "original" version, but the final version is more suited to the lyrics which are not so positive, IMO.
This version really does feel bittersweet.
I used to live in one of the flats above where all those washing machines are at the beginning of the video. I remember this being filmed. It was right outside my windows obviously. At first I loved the tune. After a whole weekend of it, I must confess my enthusiasm was beginning to wane a bit. I do love it again now though. I sometimes pop back to London and I stay near Hoxton. I have a little pilgrimage every time just to visit the old street. It's all changed a bit of course. Shame; I really fancied popping into Ozzie's Cafe for old time's sake. But this song brings back all those happy memories.
You mean the music wasn't scored in the studio? What were the playing in the street and how..as he walked?

@@silenthillisawesome6163 It's Hoxton Street, in, well Hoxton :-). As for the demographics, that's an interesting point. I moved there in 96, because it was about as cheap a place as could be in a central location. It had a bit of a rep back then. A lot of my London friends thought it was really scary and wouldn't even visit. I loved it though. It was in fact really friendly, and the first place I lived in London where I knew all my neighbours. As for demographics thats an interesting point. It probably skewed a bit your proverbial 'white working class'; but there were people from all sorts of backgrounds. The guys in the shop opposite introduced me to the delights of Kurdish coffee. That literally gave me a brain seizure (Seriously, I got one of those 'silent migraines') and there was a great Turkish cafe ("Ozzie's") that I pretty much lived in. There was also a Greggs special shop, so I ate a lot of discount baked goods. Then it suddenly became all hip. A lot of artists lived there because to was so cheap. But then almost overnight trendy galleries and hip restaurants started popping up. All sorts of celebs moved there. Hoxton Square just off the bottom of the street was a great place for people watching. My London friends were now very happy to come over and stay I noticed. Those were great times. But it did end up becoming a bit of a parody of itself. Hip for hips sake. Check out a series called "Nathan Barley" for an idea. One of the original locals had a great t-shirt. On the front was the A to Z page for Hoxton with an arrow saying "You are here". On the back it said "Now fuck off back to Shepherds Bush". When I go back it is really vibrant, the area has a great buzz. But all the old 'east end' type pubs are now trendy bars and it's all overpriced 'street food'. The old chinese chip shop is still on the street though and they still do me half a ton of chips for two quid.

I have mixed feelings about this version. It's dark and terrifying but at the same time beautiful and realistic. I prefer the original version, but it was cool to see this one as well.

Essa cena é muito forte pra passar na MTV dos anos 1990 e hoje em dia na TV aberta. Mas dá o senso de humanidade pra entender o que sente quem passa pelo que hoje a gente chama de bullying.

Pues ya es dependiendo de tus experiencias el mensaje que le puedes dar al video.
Para mi, es que somos una sociedad variada, en la cual todos seguimos reglas y normas para ser aceptado, y muchas veces por tratar de ir más allá de lo permitido, es que somos oprimidos y vistos como mala influencia; tenemos experiencias fuertes y desagradables pero tenemos que levantarnos y seguir con nuestra vida.

I'm shocked, I've listened to this song millions of times, it's my favorite song, the band too is my favorite band, this video helped me a lot and made me use my imagination to give different interpretations everytime I watched it. But today, you showed me another version which makes me love this song even more. I thank you. To be honest now that I see this, the way the video ended (the TV cut from 98) was kind of contradicting the whole lyrics by itself, like, happy ending after all. Here we can see that the meaning of the song is clearly reflected, he's alone, almost touching bottom.
The ending of the "normal" Bitter Sweet Symphony video, connects with the beginning of the song, "The Drugs Don't Work".
Finally it makes sense why his hair suddenly looks different towards the end of the regular version, as they must've redone that part on another day!
This version is more in line with reality.

wow me sorprendió ver esta versión, pensé que iba a ser un montaje o una parodia, pero termine en shok sabiendo que era el original, claro se iba a ver muy violenta y chocante para el gusto de las personas verlo golpeado y sangrando, me causo algo de tristeza como quedo y ver como sus amigos no se acercaron para ayudarlo, siguió caminando solo y adolorido. Quizás Richard quiso transmitir algo mas con eso, igual las dos versiones tienen un gran mensaje, pero obvio me quedo con la versión oficial. Mi admiración por este genio de la música Richard Ashcroft.

Esta versión de este video nos muestra claramente lo que en las letras, nos marca que muchas veces a pesar de continuar el camino las personas se irán yendo, lo cual en esta versión lo marca como llegaremos al camino aún más solos caminando al final de la vida y muchas veces sin alguien alado(no soy tan de ese pensamiento pero lo marca el video). interesante aporte @FerryLuckyMan

Esta versión representa mejor la canción y tiene un significado más profundo que el original.
La primera versión nos muestra que siempre tendremos a alguien (sus amigos al final de la versión original) que nos ayude a sentirnos mejor y no nos abandonaran.
Sin embargo, esta versión nos muestra otra cosa muy distinta, ya que éste vídeo nos enseña que toda acción tiene una consecuencia y nuestros "amigos" nunca nos van a ayudar cuando estamos metidos en líos muy grandes, pero aquí nos muestra que nosotros somos los únicos que decidimos levantarnos y salir adelante, demostrándonos que la vida sigue y tiene sus altibajos; al igual que una sinfonía agridulce.

For real. They used a similar riff to Andrew Oldham’s version, with permission, then they got their royalties stolen for 20 years. It would be one thing if they just stole the chord and that was it, but they changed it a little, added backing and vocals and made a different song that only shared a riff.
Without the Verve’s additions, the riff would have ended up being nothing more than a ringtone.

At the end of the day, every song is a remix of something that came before, a tweaked version of a song that itself is a tweaked version of another song and so on.
Artists add their own twist, but almost no music is truly original. We're all standing on top of thousands of years of musical tradition.
It's not okay to straight up steal someone else's song and pass it off as your own, but it's equally ridiculous to sue someone because one element of their song sounds too similar to yours.
Just after watching an interview where Richard Ashcroft talks about filming an alternative version of the video where he gets beat up, I see this in the recommended.

Yo lo veo de la siguiente manera: porque caemos? Para aprender a levantarnos y seguir adelante día a día, a pesar de los golpes que te da la vida, esta escena es una metafora
amigo, la cancion no se trata acerca de caerte y levantarte, no es una cancion optimista, es todo lo contrario, la letra habla de como el ser humano es un esclavo del dinero, de como tu vida ya esta destinada a ser una vida donde la sociedad todo el tiempo te esta criticando, insultando, escupiendo en la cara, y tu no tienes el poder para defenderte de toda esa mierda, no puedes hacer absolutamente nada para poder cambiar tu vida, no importa cuanto lo intentes.

Richard Ashcroft es una especie de Dios musical,creo que él esta feliz fuera de tanta fama,este señor siempre ama la música y rechaza las vanidades de ser una super estrella,no lo conozco pero sé que es un ser puro y hoy día él solo quiere que su musica alivie corazones y sea escuchaba por personas reales,no existe otro cantautor tan único como él.

This original version of the video is more introspective than the original. Beaten guy gets up and keeps going , no matter what stands in his way. I like both versions.
I prefer this version, more close to the song, more "realistic" and more empatic, I think could works much better on tv, besides, is more connected with the other clips of the album.

Me gusta esta versión, porque refleja todo lo que son las personas, que viven de esclavos del dinero, y que viven en una sociedad oscura, pero Richard nos deja ver que cada uno tiene que ser como uno quiera y también que la vida es como una sinfonía agridulce donde hay problemas y ya no se encuentran personas buenas, y acá en esta versión la mejora viendo que aunque te caigas por los problemas de la vida y sin la aceptación de la gente tenes que levantar (reflejando la golpiza como un simbolismo). Y es hermosa esta canción porque nos refleja que todos nosotros o la mayoría somos esclavos de la sociedad y pensamos en el dinero, sexo, etc. Y que no pensamos como quiere uno mismo por eso dice "No voy a cambiar" reflejando a que el ya es así y que va por su propio camino por eso la caminata a un mismo lugar y los demás van por un mismo lado reflejando que son diferentes.
La verdad está cancion es hermosa y una de las mejores de la historia

Funny thing... the first time I ever saw the video the only thing I could think of was "what d*ck he is". Ignoring everyone else and just walking through them. I have watched this video now more that a couple of hundred times. I sometimes just watch it over and over, because I got it. Ashford is in character, in a mode. Finally, thank you for this version. It was interesting to note the (small and big) differences. Even though I knew it would happen, even sensed when it was about to happen, I was shocked when he got beaten up. I have more and more felt sorry for the character he is playing, and this version solidified it. Thank you for posting it.

Si había oído que existía una versión chocante a la original y puedo concluir que ambos me gustan solo por ser el reflejo de la vida, algo vacía por encontrarte a personas que por el pasar de los días se van volviendo en extraños ( amigos, novia, compañeros de trabajó ) y al final el único que puede cambiar eso es uno mismo luchando.

He sido Fan de esta banda durante años y Nunca supe de la existencia de una "Versión Alternativa" del Video de The Bitter Sweet Symphony, me parece muy extraño que haya aparecido así de la nada, además esta Versión es muy violenta y le quita sentido al msj que se desea transmitir en la canción original!
