- How do you know when a watermelon is ripe for picking from the backyard garden? Is is the color of the melon? Do you thump it and check the sound? Or is it something else?
Join us as we harvest a few of our Orange Crisp seedless watermelons and show you our tried and true way to tell when a watermelon is ripe. We'll also be side-dressing and hilling our sweet potatoes that have starting vining outside their rows.

First year we’ve grown watermelons. Our first try at picking a ripe one was a bust … light pink inside and obviously needed more time. Used the “when the field spot turns yellow” method. Your video on the dried up tendril was so timely … have picked three straight winners since our first loser! Even proudly picked one with friends present, and was not disappointed 😊
Really appreciate all of your content … thank you!
Great to hear!
Your video reminded me of something that happened recently. On my FIL's birthday earlier this month, we were talking gardens. Somehow seedless watermelon came up and he asked, "How do you get seedless watermelon if you don't have seeds?" He was being funny, but I started to give him a summary of your video on how. No, he wasn't shocked I actually had an answer (we're engineers). His response, "Amazing that I went 83 years without knowing or ever having thought about how to get a seedless watermelon when it doesn't have seeds." Thanks for providing the education, he appreciated it.
That's great! I had the same conversation with someone yesterday.
This has been crazy. We are on the exact same time schedule. This is at least 7 or 8 videos in a row that have answered my questions that I had the same night I had them. Today I was in the garden with my son wondering if my watermelons were ripe. I joking said "Travis will answer our question tonight". Low and behold ...you did answer my question. Thanks for the knowledge you've given me this year. This is my first large garden and my first time to grow watermelons, corn, field peas and several other fruits and veggies. I have been having total success. Everything has thrived with no disasters. I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you.
Good to hear the videos have been helpful! Thanks for watching!
Love watermelon juice, of yeah
THANK YOU for bringing back Karl Childers. :-). and for all the great gardening content. it has to be a ton of work to put out three videos a week. so appreciated! go gators.
Thanks Pamela!
Blessings 💖
Your garden is looking good as usual.. my favorite watermelon is a ripe one😁!!! ✌🏻
Indeed! If it's nice and ripe, it really doesn't matter what color or variety it is.
Just picked my 1st attempt at watermelons down here in Florida. Jubilee variety. 38lbs was the largest. Made some watermelon hot sauce! Thanks for another great tour👍
That watermelon hot sauce sounds good. Could you share the recipe?
@@carricowherd3826 it can't get any more simple. About 1 quart of fermented hot peppers. This batch was a mixed bag, about 4 month ferment, and had some superhots so it's smoking hot. You can use fresh peppers. I just am used to fermenting. Strain peppers, toss in blender (ninja here), lots of melon (I'd say 1 qt plus, seeded). 1 cup distilled white vinegar. Mix it all up, that's it. It's weird how good it is. I like to let the sauce sit for a couple weeks then strain the pulp and seeds. I'm going take a portion of what I just made and add some more melon and maybe 1/2 cup more vinegar. Just to see if it'll kick the flavor up a notch. Anyway, long winded but worth a shot. Again, very weird how good it is.
That sounds amazing! I'm going to try fermenting this year. I have a ridiculous amount of peppers planted. I hope that my watermelons make. I also planted some mango peach. I thought that they sounded good. Maybe I'll try that too.
My grandfather always grew yellow watermelons and red but I always thought the yellow was sweetest. I always thumped the melon to find the ripe ones. When I was a kid bunch of us boys were camping out and we snuck in to neighbors watermelon patch and I thumped around till I found a ripe one by the moonlight. Next day neighbor told my dad, “them boys got my only ripe melon” 😂 it was good
From a purely nostalgic view...best watermelon is yellow meat Moons and Stars. As a kid...the roadside stand on the way to the lake always had them. Right to the artesian well to chill off...
Those do have a neat look to them. I think there's a seedless version of that one that we may need to try at some point.
Movie references in the last two vids - outstanding!! Slingblade was such a good movie. Everything in the plots is looking great and it was awesome to see Titus out there helping you eat those watermelons. Looking forward to Friday’s video!!
Charlie says Charleston Gray!!!
Sugar Baby is yummy and fits my garden size. Love the how to get all the juice😂
That method has worked for me.. I originally heard that from Living Tradition Homestead
That's great!
Cute kid man.
I need to try an orange one. never had one.
They're quite tasty!
Uve been watching my sugarbabies for weeks..they have grown up through the tomatoes n I have little babies hanging on tomatoes stakes.looks very cool I couldn't ever
You learned me something new today. Who knew to keep an eye on the tendril? I was taught to push my thumbnail into the skin and when it popped instead of denting it was ready. Thanks for the tip.
You're welcome Keith!
That’s exactly what I have settled in. When I find the tendril dry I wait a few days to a week and then pick it. I had one of the juiciest watermelons I ever had last year. Can’t wait to get to my 1st one this year. I have one dried up tendril I am just suspicious that it might be one of those ones that tricky ones.
It’s melon time😀
Humidity is the killer😉
Nice looking Seedless Melon Travis 😀
At the shops they use the bongo method, tapping all the melons....😉
That watermelon looks awesome. I bet that rind would make some good pickles too.
104 is to hot for me no matter the humidity but humid weather is definitely worse you're tougher than me
WOW!!!! My mouth is watering. I didn't get my orange crush seeds started now I'm really bummed. I don't think I would have enough time now. About 90 good days left of growing season for me zone 4. But I might put a couple seeds in the ground and do a little experiment. 😁👍
It might be worth a shot!
Love the watermelon tip!
Thanks Sherry!
Doesn't everyone drink the juice? Yum! I can't wait to get some melons. Mine have only been in the ground about a month. This is only my 2nd year growing them. Thanks for all of the tips for growing better melons.
Hope you grow some good ones!
yellow baby
Thanks Travis for ripe tip. I started some mini-love, beni, kajari melons for trellis growing. Also went big orange the orange tendersweet now I know what to look for. ❤️ your content and videos. Yes your way ahead of me but it's so helpful as my season progresses. Blessings to you and your family!
Thanks Kittie!
Just in time! I'm eyeballin a watermelon in the garden right now...lol we need the rain so bad, but I'm like..wait..don't split my one watermelon!!
I'm going to try to grow those yellow meat watermelon. I have some seeds from a few I've eaten. That kid is ADORABLE!! Thanks for the great video
Thanks for joining us Pamela!
just in case anyone didnt notice this part 14:09. he warned you dont go blaming him :) thanks for sharing. i wish i had the space for watermelon . i might could grow one a season but that might not be worth the time
I love the way you do taste tests...... 🤣
Thank you!
I don't know yet I'll let you know after I get to try my Orange Crush for the first time this year got some getting pretty close
That Orange Crush is a good one too!
@@LazyDogFarm I seen you trying it last year I thought I would give it a try my wife likes the seedless I can eat them both if it's a good tasting seedless watermelon
HArvest moon seedless
Awesome looking melons! I'm trying to grow a few watermelons currently and so far lot's of flowers.
Lots of flowers usually means you'll have lots of watermelons eventually!
It's been a couple of years since I've grown watermelons. I am growing some this year and will use the tendril method. I have been using the tendril method for vining winter squash as well. Seemed logical to me.
Thanks for the content!
Actually the tendril is not very consistent. He even said it needs a day or two afterwards before its fully ripe. The one he picked isnt fully ripe. The hint is the stem was cut. All you need to do is reach down with one finger and snap the stem off. If it doesnt snap off, the melon is still getting nutrition. Its similar to a cantaloupe. A cantaloupe will pop off a watermelon needs a little more pressure. Trust me, I wasted some really big melons before using the method of snapping off the stem.
The dried tendril basically means the vine is starting to die but its not fully dead yet if you cant snap it off with one finger. You can get good melons looking at the tendril but snapping the vine is the only way to know 100% positive that the melon has gotten fully ripe.
Gosh, so many good varieties of watermelons! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Ali Baba! Ok, you've about talked me into going with some seedless next year! That one you worked on looks mighy fine! And, yes, of course, slurp that juice!
Those seedless ones will test your seed starting skills pretty hard, but you'll get the hang of it.
That pumpkin is huge! I saw it!
I tried to pick it up and couldn't. Gonna have to bring in reinforcements. I've got a buddy who I think can pick it up though.
Travis, you been working out. Nice guns.
Fun show. I love to watch a man and his offspring savoring a ripe and well grown watermelon. The great Rocky Ford melon fields are about 80 miles away, but 2500' lower than our place. Need to find me a local boutique grower who's particular about varieties and ripeness. I'm obliged to use the pink, pank, punk knuckle thump method at the farmer's markets but often choose poorly without the tendril as a sure guide.
I believe that Seven Springs sells the mined source of Sulfate of Potash (potassium sulphate, 0-0-50) that still meets OMRI guidelines. You know what you're doing there.
Nice melon.
Thanks Sue!
We just checked all the tendrils on our plot a couple days ago! Got a little longer to go until they are ready. Im liking that Agro-Thrive hat, mine is just about worn out.
They are good hats.
Do you have a video on how you plant yours and take care of them I’ve planted before with no luck grow small and that’s it so I gave up😂
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/8TiqmOk3GW0/видео.html
@@LazyDogFarm thank you
Those look so good! I’m up North so I don’t know any specific varieties, just what’s in the supermarket! I started life in England, I didn’t even know what watermelon was until we came to Canada!
Never realized that they don't have watermelons across the pond!
I'm jealous for your Titus, I too can put a hurt on a watermelon, ours here in this area isn't yet ripe. I buy from farmers and gardeners I know how they're grown that has surplus, I avoid most store bought, don't know what chemicals used in growing (specially those grown in Mexico and other latin American countries), even organic labeled melons has ways to get around the organic rules.
I've watched all your videos and really enjoyed them all while learning a lot about veggie gardening in the process. Any chance you could grow a couple of rows of butterbeans or butterpeas as a fall crop or next spring and share your insights on how best to grow them? Thanks and keep up the good work.
We grew butterpeas last year and still have some in the freezer. I might grow more next spring though.
The very orange crisp watermelon you just grew is the sweetest watermelon I've grew... I have grew them about 4 or 5 different years... If they are not that sweet now they will be in a few days... Alibaba is the best textured crisp great red watermelon that I've ate... But a 40lb orange glo is my favorite if it is right, you need to get in on that...
Can't wait to try the Ali Baba. I've had Orange Glo, but it has been quite a while.
I'm with little man, it is hard to beat a good yellow or orange meated watermelon. I've never heard of the tendril trick before...neat!
I am growing sweet taters now. I use a super strong potash and a super strong phosphorus. The leaves taste like spinach when you boil them. So, I always get a few crops of greens in addition to a crop of sweet taters.
What are you using for your phosphorus source?
@@LazyDogFarm I use Easy Peasy's Triple Super Phosphate. It assays out at 0-46-0. Chemically, it is P2O5. A 2# bag runs between $11-20 online. For normal use they recommend 1 cup per 100 sq ft every 6 weeks. However, I do a feeding every two weeks for my maters, peppers, eggplants, and other flowering plants. Then I go behind that with liquid potassium sulfate to insure proper fruit production. Here in NW Florida, the Commissioner of Agriculture told the feed stores not to carry phosphorus because they say we have enough in our sandy soils to sustain plants. So, I had to find online retailers.
I use the same method to determine if my watermelons are ready. Rarely fails me. Your melons are way ahead of mine though!
My favorite variety is called (Strawberry). It has white seeds and its not round. But i also like enjoy a góod old favorite Crimson Sweet.
We have some Crimson Sweet that we'll be planting soon. That's a good variety.
Travis, have you eve canned watermelon juice. It is so good. Put yu watermelon in a blender, blends . Put in qts. Water bath them for 20 min. So good . You may add about one fourth cup of sugar.
I haven't ever canned it, but I could see where that would be good.
The juice can also by drunk fresh. In Hispanic communities you'll often see "agua de sandia" offered. Pureed watermelon pulp with lots of cold water, sometimes sugar, and served chilled over ice. Sprig of mint. Wonderfully refreshing.
I had a beautiful watermelon patch... until the deer found it. They have destroyed them... looks like I'll be buying watermelons this year and a hot wire setup for next year.
Your patch looks awesome.
I would look like a little Indian waiting with my bow and arrow.
@@joeyl.rowland4153 it was all over in two nights. If I didn't live in a neighborhood I would do more than plan for a hot wire next spring...
Same thing happened to me with the deer, I even had a hot fence and it still didn't hel, they devoured them. I have a few left and put bird netting over it, maybe I'll get 8 watermelons out of 50 plants.
@@brendakern8749 it is very frustrating to say the least. I planted 26 and last I looked there are three watermelons left. So many leaves are gone that I don't know if they will live long enough to ripen.
@@jonlewis6630 Bow and arrow is quiet.
Our first year of growing seedless watermelons. And we are trying a variety called Sweet Gem, which is the best tasting seedless watermelon I have ever tasted. It is red but taste as good as any seeded watermelon. Wish us luck on growing seedless watermelon.
Best of luck! Hope they are delicious!
I've spoken about my 6 year potato experiment where I've tried to simulate the volcanic soils they evolved in, one trick I've learned that seems to make them happy is I go to clearance, salvage stores and even Dollar General, go to the mineral human supplement isle, get a couple large bottals of calcium, magnesium, potassium and from Amazon a medium bottle of trace minerals supplement, put then together in a tough food processor and pound them into a powder all mixed up, the Taters seems to love it, started putting it around my tomatoes and peppers and they too are very happy.
Ouch that seems a mighty expensive way to get minerals.
Or you might pick up a bag of Azomite at the Box, local nursery or on Amazon. Minerals from A to Z.
@@markware7748 Azomite is quite good. 👍
Calcium citrate is pretty amazing really
Go 6-3-1 on potassium calcium magnesium. It's the golden ratio of you are step feeding minerals.
I don't have watermelon anymore. My buttercup squash swallowed it up. Just here for info, should the stars align. 🤣😅😂
Hopefully you'll get at least one!
You were sweating just before you went to pick that watermelon. Getting *nervous* about getting a fully ripe one. 😅😅 [just kidding, I know it's hot out there] I haven't grown too many watermelons so the best I've had so far is the crimson sweet. Growing Babydoll this year which is supposed to be quite good. Won't be ready until the end of summer tho'.
Yes, the telltale tendril going from green to brown is a good way with most varieties. However, as usual, I looked at some of my watermelons yesterday and noticed several melons with brown tendrils. I know those melons won't be ripe for at least a week or more. The tendrils all along the healthy vine looked to have been dry for some time. I suspect I could've been bent or damaged them when I rearranged the vines early on, but I've ran into the problem nearly every year. That's when you're forced to go to belly color, thumping, etc. When I planted the same variety each year I could tell a ripe melon based on a color change of the rind. The dry tendril would be a confirmation. I now plant all kinds of melons and I have more trouble picking ripe melons. Under ripe and over ripe melons go to the pigs and chickens so it doesn't bother me very much.
The past week I picked a few with a dry tendril and then let them sit a few days after picking before cutting them. That seemed to make them even better.
you like watermelon so much you should make you some watermelon rind jelly so you can taste that watermelon all year
I've never tried that, but now I'm interested ...
Best watermelon I ever tasted would have been any one that I had as a boy in the middle of the day break when harvesting tobacco in the July heat.
I hear ya! A fresh watermelon is the best way to beat the heat.
Travis, are honey dew melons like watermelons in that they have a tendril that will brown up when they are ripe? We are growing 2 varieties for the first time this year and I'm not sure what the ripeness sign is. The tendril trick has always worked for us on watermelons though.
I've never grown honeydew, so hard to say. The tendril would probably be a good starting point though.
Never had luck growin watermelon even here in texas, they get huge but never really ripen, everything else seems to grow well
Is it possible to get a decent sweet potato harvest if the property Is somewhat shaded by oak trees. The city does not allow these trees to be removed or to be pruned too heavy. Zone 8B
I think so. You've got plenty of warm weather for them to grow in 8b.
@@LazyDogFarm Ill give it a go. My sunny areas are occupied with other crops and wanted to try sweet potatoes but never did because of the shaded areas and restricted space.
Pulled up 1 section of my sweet potatoes. Could i stick the root section and the remaining leaves back in the soil and get more sweet tators ?? Im in 9b so plenty of heat left
I'd just cut some of the green growth (no roots), put them in a jar of water and let them form roots, then plant that.
Flash drought
This is the first time I’ve had the problem of deciding when to pick watermelon. Typically, out here in Oregon (zone 8B), I pick them when the weather turns cool and hope for the best. This year I may actually get more than one melon per vine! Here’s the problem.
I transplanted Wilson Sweet (85 days) on May 16. It’s now been over 90 days and the tendril is green as can be. The rind does seem a little duller, though.
But … I transplanted Sugar Baby (75 days) on June 19. The tendril was brown and dry few days ago, after only 66 days.
Both varieties are planted in hot, sunny locations in raised beds. The Wilson Sweets also have a brick pathway in front that helps with the heat. This summer has been sunny and warm, so I thought they should have had typical maturity times.
Do I trust the “brown tendril” method or the publicized “days to maturity?” Should I pick neither, either, or both? I’ll appreciate any guidance you can provide! (Although please don’t tell me to thump them. I’ve had a lot of green melons that way. 🙄)
Another you tube gardener said you should wait a week or more after the tendrils dry ,her name is Calikim 29 ,she will give close up of when to harvest sugar baby, I planted mine in the middle of June also and it's still green
I always liked the yellow meat water melon more than the reds. It's hard to find a good water melon around my area these days. All the folks that grew them have gone on to their reward, and I don't have the space.
Karl Childers.....really?! Did the watermelon taste like fried taters and mustard? I absolutely laughed out loud on that one!. FYI that heat wave is coming back starting Friday.
It didn't taste like fried taters, but would make a perfect dessert after fried taters! lol
Ducks are also know the ripe melons
Sangria
Can t you have a boon fire and use the ashes instead of buying sulfate of pot ash? Times are getting tough and we need more tips about how to do it on the cheap at home.
You sure can!
I'm more of a cantaloupe fan
I wonder whatever happened to all the black diamonds they were a big real dark green round watermelon almost black
Don't hardly see those around anymore here either.
🍉🍉🍉🍉😁😁😁😁😁😁😎😎😎😎
I was hoping the tip was not the tendril trick. I have been tricked before. And I have one that I am suspicious about now. I see other dried tendrils on the same vine without melons so it’s possible the vine just didn’t get enough water at one time and it dried up.
Never seen one. Children learning to spit seeds is good for speech…articulate tongue. And you grow more plants. Looks nice, could not eat red ones because of migraines.
a dollar for every weed I can see game?
Lol
