Dentist here. I totally agree. No carbs = no cavities. It is also about the frequency of carbs/starches, not the total amount. So intermittent fasting is also fantastic for your teeth. It is harder to get cavities if you only eat once or twice a day

HAVE TO SHARE! I have not been to the dentist in a very VERY long time (20+ years). Im self employed & don’t have dental insurance. I take really good care of my teeth because of that. I floss nearly every day, brush in the am & pm and oil pull about 1x a week. I also make my own toothpaste and alternate with a coconut oil toothpaste as well because my mouth doesn’t react well to Colgate or crest (it peels away a layer of skin and leaves an off taste in my mouth) My mom has a problem with plaque and my dad had gum issues.
I just went to the dentist 2 days ago and the doctor told me my oral health was awesome! He couldn’t believe I hadn’t been to a dentist in that long. The true test was when I got to the hygienist for my scheduled cleaning. She didn’t have to do anything! She said I had no plaque, no tarter or biofilm. I wanted to cry, I was so happy. She told me I had a mouth hygienists love to get!
For those that are curious, this is the toothpaste I make. I use a couple tablespoons of bentonite clay, a sprinkle of baking soda, couple drops of peppermint oil and cinnamon oil, 1 tsp xylitol, drizzle some liquid coconut oil and water to make a nice paste. Store it in a glass jar.

I’ve learned that one of the most common habits of people who have a ton of cavities is drinking soda. When I notice the patient has rampant decay, I’ll ask them if they drink a lot of soft drinks or energy drinks and 99% of the time they say yes and seem surprised that I can tell that. The carbonation and sugar are the most volatile combination for our teeth.

Little note about starches. If you love potatoes (like me) when you cook them, let them cool, then heat them again later (to eat) the bio-availability of the bad starches become drastically reduced. You can rinse them in cold water as well to remove surface starches. Also, chilled potatoes decrease postprandial glucose, insulin, and glucose-dependent insulinotropic Peptide.

    Excerpts:
According to the American Dental Association, to prevent tooth decay in children and adults, you need to:
    • Brush twice a day
    • Floss your teeth once a day
    • See the dentist on a regular basis
    • Limit snacking
    • Consume a well-balanced diet
    • Use fluoride and dental sealants (plastic coating)
    • Keep added sugar to a minimum
What is a “balanced diet?” In many cases, this means including grains or starches in your diet. Diets that include sugar, grains, and starch can lead to cavities.
There is an enzyme in your mouth that helps break down starch and inhibits damaging acids from being produced. This enzyme is dependent on B vitamins, especially B1.
Sugar, carbs, and starches deplete vitamin B1. The more deficient you are in B1, the more you’re going to deplete the important enzyme that protects your teeth.
Other things, like bicarbonates, also help neutralize harmful acids in your mouth naturally.
In my opinion, to get rid of cavities, you need to address the underlying cause. You have to stop consuming sugar and starches.
The ketogenic diet has many benefits beyond weight loss, including promoting good oral health-and it’s great for adults and children!
    Thank you Dr Berg!! 🐱👍🏿

just 1-2 months of this bad habit resulted in HUGE cavities in the molars
So, here are my tips -

After I stopped eating white sugar and any type of bread, I haven't had cavities for 10 years. I eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, meat, eggs, buckwheat, and various types of porridge-except oatmeal, because it contains a lot of phytic acid, which you should avoid as if it's poison. I also realized that pH plays a significant role in cavity formation. If the saliva in your mouth is acidic, you'll easily get cavities, even with perfect oral hygiene. So, the most important factors are maintaining a proper diet and keeping the pH in your mouth alkaline.

Dentist here. I agree with you Dr. Berg. Let's add that the tooth brush needs to be replaced at least every 3 months or sooner when the bristles have lost their integrity. Also, it's important to scrape your tongue with a tongue scraper to remove the bad bacteria hiding on the tongue crevices. The most common cause of bad breath is from build up of germs on the tongue. Furthermore, all alcoholic drinks contain high levels of sugar and especially harmful is wine which is produced using a fermentation process. Alcohol also causes dehydration which reduces salivary flow causing dry mouth which is the breeding ground for bad germs.

Hi, I have several questions. Every morning I have some green stuff on my tongue, is that a normal thing? I think it might be bacteria growing or something like that. And if my teeth feel a bit odd after drinking lemonade from freshly squeezed lemons with lots of lemon juice, is that a sign of cavities?

Again, I can attest to this. For years and years and years, no matter how much I brushed or flossed, no matter what I did, I could not stop from getting cavities. My dentist administered fluoride when I was a kid every six months, a giant tray of fluoride in my mouth, I can remember just how sick it made me feel and it was all I could do not to throw up with that tray of my mouth for 10 minutes. For hours afterward, I would still feel sick. They said it would harden and strengthen my teeth. 👀 Well, by early 20s. 20s I had had a tremendous amount of cavities, multiple fillings, yes, Mercury feelings, and my dad would constantly ask me. Did you brush your teeth? Enough times? You can't be brushing your teeth enough. That's got to be the problem. Well I can tell you was brushing my teeth three and four times a day, flossing, brushing my teeth immediately after eating anything, and nothing I did helped. Cavities continued. At one point in a six month period I had nine new cavities. Well for years ongoing I had fought to try and keep my teeth. In the last two years, my health had taken a giant crash due to life circumstances and some very bad diet choices. All of my teeth were loosening, my gums were sore continuously and bleeding and a whole host of other physical issues including fatigue, loss of mental focus, etc etc. Etc. I came across Dr. Berg's video on teeth, vitamin c, b vitamins etc. I decided I would switch to keto, drop sugar and thoroughly, stop taking ascorbic acid vitamin c, and start eating vitamin c in the form of whole foods. Peppers, sauerkraut, lemons, etc. Well in about a month my oral health turned around 100%. One of the teeth I had that was super loose and had been bothering me for over a year. Finally came out. When it came out. I looked at it and I could see it was about 60% Mercury filling. I realized my body had just rejected this tooth because it was loaded with toxins. Since that came out and I have maintained my keto diet and healthy eating, no more cavities, no more bleeding gums, no more fatigue, no more loss of mental clarity, and on down the list. What Dr. Berg is talking about here is exactly spot on. Also, it is true that the sugar industry tried to make fat the demon. The demon is not fat, the demon is sugar, refined carbs, the starches, and of course big corporations. 😁 I could go on and on and on about all this, but I wanted to make the point that Dr. Berg's information is definitely spot on accurate. If you're having tooth problems, cavities, weight gain, lack of mental focus, on down the list, adopt the keto diet, just try it for 30 days. Drop sugar and switch to healthy eating. You will be truly amazed. I feel about 20 years younger in about 3 months. Thank you so much Dr. Berg from the bottom of my heart for helping me get my health back! ♥️ I should also briefly mention that cod liver oil and vitamin A in the form of retinol were important pieces of this recovery as well.

Wow, that's crazy tjat you did so much yet still had cavities. I think genetics which give some ppl tougher enema that others and bacterial flora in the mouth varies a lot person to person, and so some do not experience many problems despite the high sugar and carbs, however, eventually, that enamal will wear down, and they wont have that protection any more. Keto works, I dont feel the bacteral film on my teeth anymore, at least way less, and I suspect the makeup of these bacteria changes too, if theyre not getting the sugars to ferment!

Weston Price was primarily interested in Activator X because of its ability to control dental caries. By studying the remains of human skeletons from past eras, he estimated that there had been more dental caries in the preceding hundred years than there had been in any previous thousand-year period and suggested that Activator X was a key substance that people of the past obtained but that modern nutrition did not adequately provide. Price used the combination of high-vitamin cod liver oil and high-Activator X butter oil as the cornerstone of his protocol for reversing dental caries. This protocol not only stopped the progression of tooth decay, but completely reversed it without the need for oral surgery by causing the dentin to grow and remineralize, sealing what were once active caries with a glassy finish. One 14-year-old girl completely healed 42 open cavities in 24 teeth by taking capsules of the high-vitamin cod liver oil and Activator X concentrate three times a day for seven months.

I brushed a lot, flossed daily, used mouth wash, all good practices, except I didn't go to the dentist regurlarly for cleanings. One dentist told me my problem was that I simply was genetically more prone to cavities. Then finally I found a new dentist that filled my last cavities and told me the most important was to get regular cleanings every semester, and that even though I brushed daily, it would not stop tartar from building up, and under that tartar, the cavities would grow. Now, for over 4 years I have been going to the same dentist to get cleanings and since that I haven't gotten any new cavities at all. My habits have changed to brushing my teeth only before bed with weekly flossings, even though the dentist recomends at least 2 brushes a day. Since I'm lazy, and it's working, I'll keep brushing once. It's what works for me.

Mostly it happened within two teeth where I couldn't floss as they were very tight (30 years ago we didn't have right tools to floss). Also, my diet of what my mom was preparing beside vegetables, was mostly carbs as she thought we can get full with bread, pasta, rice et, not thinking about the lack of nutritional values. When I was indipendent I never got cavities as I was controlling myself what I was eating (I am into veggies and fruits, no carbs, sugar, soda drinks etc). A few days after the visit though, he found out about the bad effects of food additives and decided to completely change his diet to basically just raw vegan foods. After a month of eating a completely different diet (before he was a dorito, soda, and hot pocket addict) he goes in to get his fillings and the dentist can't find them. He even did new x-rays and it showed the cavities were gone. His dentist said it was the first time he'd ever seen that happen.
Years later I was working at a dental technician place and was looking up dental research. And a recent study found that the teeth CAN grow back enamel under the right circumstances, but if the dentin underneath becomes too damaged, then the enamel cannot grow back. Not that the enamel is alive but rather the dentin produces the enamel.

If your dental infection or decay is caused by parasite overload (too much sugar) ivermectin also helps.
It is not only what you eat but also how you cook/prep it !
Example - If you use herbs & spices like garlic, clove, oregano, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, thyme etc in your recepies, you'll reap the benefits of their strong yet natural antimicrobial effects which keep bacteria/yeast/parasites in check.
You still need to keep your simple carbs, refined sugars & starches on the lower side to sustain dental health.
Having reasonable amount of lean proteins will also help build the dental collagen structure.
You could also supplement with B vitamins, Essential aminos, Trace minerals and electrolytes (potassium, magnesium) for additional support.
Example: Your teeth love sulfur based aminos like taurine, methionine, cysteine (fights tooth decay and rebuild)...and minerals like zinc (strengthens dental structure) , manganese, boron (prevents calcium and magesium loss), and molybdenum (repairs tooth enamel).

I BEG to differ Mr. Dr. --- Applying the understanding that there are only two sides to chemistry (Acid/Alkaline) it is easier to draw the connection to the saliva. Saliva breaks down damn near anything...you can clean with it. So if you eat crap acidic foods like you mention it creates an acid ash. If your body runs acidic so does the saliva. No sugar remains on your teeth after a while..com'on man put it together. A few tips: 1-simply gargle/swish with water for 30 seconds a few times after eating/drinking, especially after acids, like sugar, fruit, coffee, tea, lemon, vinegar, ect. It will dissipate and neutralize acids, animals in nature do this. 2-gargle/swish your toothpaste, after brushing for 5-10 minutes as it releases piles of enzymes to eat bacteria and remineralize your teeth.😊

    • @mercedesvargas8530

for number 2- having your toothpaste in your mouth more than a minute is bad for your health. You will be absorbing all kind of chemicals, and if the toothpaste is not flouride free, is absolutely bad for your health. Rinsing with wheat grass instead ( one spoon diluted in an onco of water) is hundred percent the best thing you can do to take care of your mouth. So many nutrients are absorbed and your mouth has a good way to fight any bacteria.

Besides that, when I snack on something sugary, I always keep a bottle of still water within my reach, to reguarly swirl it around my mouth and get the sugar off my teeth that way, before it forms to acid 🙂

I have to add one point which is crucially missing in my opinion: The intake of enough vitamin D2/D3 and Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphates etc. Everything that makes up the bones. Since teeth are in a sense bones, just outside our bodies and visible. Like bones actually, they are somehow able to repair themselves to a small degree. This isn't talked about often. Also this prevents brittle bones etc. Many people also suffer from their teeth not having enough space inside their jaws. This is also due to malnutrition growing up, and having not enough Vitamin D3, which leaves especially the lower jaw smaller then it should be. There was a documentary floating around on youtube, also experiments with animals, cats I believe, which showed the smalles jaws and the teeth problems. This defect doesn't appear in animals in the wild with their normal diet again. It's human's wise assery again at work.

What’s your diet consist of besides sugar? and look at the ingredients of tooth paste.

You can also get cavities from being injured, from hormonal increases (like during pregnancy), low mineral count, low vitamin D, rough/cooked teeth (which are hard to clean), having a dry mouth from medication. drug use, grinding your teeth (use a mouthguard), and frequent acidic foods (not just sugar/carbs, but ACV, lemon juice, etc.). Also, you wear away your enamel if you bush your teeth within a 30 minute window of eating (the pours in your teeth are opened from brushing, which allows the acid from eating to get in easier). It doesn't just have to do with your diet and hygiene.

I wish I had paid more attention to information like this when I was young (in my thirty's), instead it took me until almost fifty to understand how diet is everything. I have been a carnivore for about 6 years now and what a difference it has made. If I only new then what I know now ! Good info Doc. Young people have an advantage now do to the internet, if they would only take advantage of it. Sadly, that does not seem to be the case. Wisdom only comes from experience and time, and then you are usually to old to make up for the lost time.

Thanks for this Dr. Berg! Kriss ai also said that aside from brushing and flossing daily, it will be great if you also use an antimicrobial mouthwash..

The only cavities I’ve ever had were from a dentist who drilled teeth that didn’t have true cavities back when I was 7-8 years old. He was found out, but I still have my fillings. Irritates me!

$$$ and greed do that to some doctors, dentists. A dentist drilled allmost all my teeth, and pulled all my wisdom teeth while i was in full anestheasia. I came in for 1 teeth and woke up with a total make over with amalgamfillings everwhere.
If i could of sued those in the clinic i would. I was 26 years old and no cavities excelt 1 bad tooth.
Monster of dentists and clinics exist.

I've never really had teeth problems, I eat sugar day in day out and I'm 34. Since I know that baking soda neutralizes acid I always brush with arm and hammer baking soda toothpaste. Plain baking soda as a mouthwash works too. But I prefer to use hydrogen peroxide after brushing with the baking soda as I know it creates a thorough cleaning reaction....but only like one or twice a week

Dr Berg, you haven't mentioned oil pulling. Does that work to reduce cavities?

He mentioned a few times using enough healthy fats helps protects and remineralise teeth. For example, raw butter was used back in the day to keep healthy teeth ❤

my food and cut right down on fruit. No new fillings for over two years now. Very good advice.

I surmise that the most important factors with regards to stronger teeth are a) lower bodily inflammation, b) adequate hydration and salivary production, and c) adequate nutrition.
