That is a gorgeous bicycle. Interesting fun facts about Waterford Precision Cycles also. Beautiful cat as well. I Love cats and I have Persians too. 💕🫡
It may not be my cup of coffee, but its an interesting bike none the less. It's interesting to see what somebody's dream bike is like, and I appreciate the effort you've put into equipping this bike and getting it to suit your touring needs. I hope you are able to put some more miles on it.
Just wanted to say: Worked at Burley's tandem frame contractor which also used custom butted True Temper... Didja know that most of their tubing was not seamless. It has welded seams and when used on their thin-wall 1.125" diameter tubing, (which we ovalized...) you had to be very careful were the seam was positioned towards the ovalizer's faces, so you didn't crack the seam open. It looks like a nice bike, I'm betting it's supple and comfortable on rougher paved roads, much like my Austro-Daimler Vent Noir. Which has seamless Reynolds 531 tubes.
Excellent. For folks from the hinterlands of Wisconsin, seeing how you execute the details (decaleur, front rack, wiring, etc) is the content I haven't seen anywhere else. Beautiful bike.
Great looking bike and very well setup. I love all the functional touches and details. I agree about the Ultegra R8000 group set too. Mine has been through a lot of miles and weather conditions. Proper maintenance keeps the group working so well.
Beautiful! Nice components too, I was sad to hear Waterford closed this year. I have a couple of Rivendells that were built there, and the frames are flawless. I've heard Richard interviewed several times, and he was always quite humble but informative.
SWEET ride! Loved this video. I grew up in Waterford in the 70s and 80s. Moved away in 86. Had hoped to one day get a customized Waterford bike, but I guess that ship has sailed. Really enjoyed the tour of yr Waterford though. Thx for sharing!
I love this bike. Those cranks man! I ended up with a track/road 2200 lugged Waterford. In my size on EBay. It fits 32/33s which is enough for me. A dream bike for sure. You may have inspired me to get a post out to share.
Andy, thanks for showing us your Waterford. I too always wanted one and was so disappointed to find out that I had waited too long and they were closed. I guess I'll have to go a step up and get a Drumlin.
Very much enjoyed that video! Thanks for quality, tasteful background music. Hollow tubing on bottle holders! Always learn from your detailing and totally steady, up-close camera work!
Rear hubs are one of the few components worth splurging on IMO as they really affect the feel of the bike. I cheap out in many other areas but am running an Onyx Vesper rear for the silence and soft engagement which is a plus for me. IMO the most noticeable areas of upgrade: tires, rear hub, pedals, saddle, bars.
Love my Waterford too. Going on 20 years with it. I heard you mention Ellis, I had a chance to talk with Dave when he was at Waterford and he explained how he massaged the lugs on my bike to make it look 👌🏻.
Beautiful! Reminds me quite a bit of my own treasured Cielo, by Chris King. They beautiful welds and light steel tubing... However I really feel like splurging on some of your "fancy" add ons now! I got cheap stuff when I was building up there frame😅
Beautiful bike! Love the way you have tuned it for practicality and beauty! I’m also dreaming about building a rando bike and this is a great inspiration. Thanks!
Really like your bike. I like the old school steel bikes. Can't afford a custom. But, I have a couple of All City bikes that have served me well over the years.
Congratulations, that is well thought out bike build for sure! It's always exciting to see other bike mechanics build their own bikes, as a hobby bike mechanic I have many yeses and nos in my head when it comes to technical solutions and bike parts. Greetings from Croatia
my wife was from east troy, i had a fantasy of going to Waterford and ordering a bike. it never happened and then they closed. I am happy enough with the manufactured bikes i have and will probably never (75) buy a custom one. sometime I plan to visit your shop, you remind me so much of a wisconsin friend i have, your video's are great. phil
Congrats on all your success! It's a really beautiful bike, and a great walk through for style of bike that doesn't have a lot of content, and Waterford isn't on youtube much. I love my Waterford RST-22. It has randonneur geometry and can fit up to 38c tires.
I remember as a teenager there was a high end road bike shop that opened in my local UK town selling Waterford frames. We went in as lads just admiring the build and paint quality but feeling out of place in the shop due to the price. Beautiful build!
Cool. I believe these are what the Poms (English) call Audax bikes. I don't know what Australians call them, as I've not done one of their rides, but I've owned a fully equipped, mudgard shod, long distance bike some years ago. It was actually my favourite bike. I frequently rode it in preference to my carbon road bike, until an unfortunate crash put it out of service for a couple of months. A local rally driver's shop was the place recommended to weld up my broken frame. They did a decent job. Unfortunately the frame didn't last. It was rough, a Ribble Winter trainer, I believe it was called. It was rough, but I loved it. This Waterford bike is a thing of beauty. It must be pretty heavy, but my god it's pretty. I'd like to see a riding video of it, to see how it goes on the road. It's a beautiful custom machine, and I'd like to see it in it's element, doing what it's supposed to do.
This was super interesting, I love hearing about thought-through specific parts and pieces(old steel tubing or brands) that I otherwise would not know about. Lovely color too
Impressive, man. Beautiful bike. Gorgeous and well engineered René Herse components for touring, I'm a v-brake man, but hard to deny the classic look and the superb praticality of those cantivelers for a 38c+fenders+road levers combo. And those subcompact cranks? Just stunning. To be honest I dont see any area of improvement in the bike itself. Offcourse some posh (and perhaps a bit of your fancy self) may have prefered that you use silver campa potenza group, but how can you deny the powerful trickled-down technology from Shimano: 11 speed mechanical ultegra were used by 2nd division cycling teams in Europe circa 2015! You cannot beat that performance, it's just the same than Dura-ace, just slightly heavier! on a secondary note, one hs to appreciate how local the bike production can be. As being french, my dream bike is obviously made a local now-defunct company in the Pyrenées, Sunn. You got my sub, man, keep it local and agro.
What a beautiful bike! Being that I'm in Maine, I have only seen a couple of Waterford bikes, but they certainly are beautiful. There's something about a custom bike that always brings a smile to your face I had a custom built ti frame in the early 90's, and just LOVE that bike! At any rate, thanks for sharing, I LOVE this stuff and can't wait to see your next one.
Wonderful bike!!! I have a 2011 Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen frame made by Waterford. Also running the Onxy rear hub and Son front dynamo with an Edilux light on Velocity Quills but with 44mm Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires. Waterford frames are pretty incredible! I bought mine new and it is my all-time favorite bike!
That is one sweeeeet bike! I'm starting something along that line with a custom frame. At 6' 4" / 193cm, I reckon I've been riding "almost right" bikes for enough decades that it's time to get a bike that's "just right." I love those René Herse bits and I had them on my parts list too! Although I'm thinking Herse center-pull rather than canti (I love the feel of good center-pulls), but of course that'll depend how well everything plays together. Anyway, thanks for the tour of that luvly machine!
TIG welding on tubing this thin is not easy so the fillet of the weld is indeed smaller than what you would see on a Taiwan made late 1980's robot welded bike. Anlun factory made Nishsiki's Cunningham's designed MTB's and their welds were almost perfect but still had a bit of an outwards bulge, true, precision hand welded TIG welding look like it flows from one tube to the next.
Hi Andy. Thanks for the video, and that is a wonderful bike. I have a Waterford storie to share. Last March I found a Waterford, in my frame size, on the local craigslist. After a little back and forth the seller and I decided on a price of 650.00 dollars. After getting it home, and to my shock and amazement, the craigslist bike had been used, abused, neglected, and had some of the worst DIY work I had ever seen. In the wise words of a RUclipsr, "My bike sucked"! However, with many new parts and many hours of careful work, it has become am absolutely wonderful bike. If anyone gets the chance to buy a used one, they are well worth the time and money. Have a nice summer. Tom
Nice set up on the Waterford. I’m sure it rides well and the feeling of having all your stuff with you and ready for any turn in the weather or nightfall is worth the efforts and expenses. I have a Boulder Bicycle All Road with 650b wheels that was built by Waterford. It is finely crafted for sure right down to the quality of the paint job. It had traditional small diameter tubes with thin walls which give it a magical ride quality. I’ve done two 200K brevets with it. Mine also has Honjo’s, cantilever brakes by IRD in back Shimano on front for using rack bolts. Campy 11 speed shifters and Shimano Ultegra deraileurs. Rene Herse Baby shoe extra light tires set up tubeless on Pacenti bretvet rims with white industries t11 rear hub and a Son extra wide generator hub in front. “Compass” tail light and the Edelux headlight. Maes parallel handle bar and an SQlab saddle on a Nitto post. Bike weighs 25lb with fenders and front rack. Feels like 20 when riding though. 🏁
Love it. So glad you scratched that itch while Waterford could oblige. What custom steel frame builder would you recommend for us laggards who haven’t gotten it together? I’d be interested in your journeys with this one and others like it, how you planned them, who you went with, what you carried, where you stayed, etc. Your channel’s terrific. Keep it going!

Interesting - So Waterford cycles have closed. It was kind of like the last of the Original Schwinn. It's a bit like a loss of a piece of America.
Beautiful . waaay prettier than the modern aero looking clone bikes of today . 👍
Man, that is a beautiful bike. Sad to hear Waterford has closed.

I appreciate how you renovate bikes for riders with small budgets, but I really enjoyed your videos about your Waterford and your Ellis bikes.

I've been on a gunner single speed for 23 years. I wouldn't have any other way.
Really sad to see water for go away
I raced on a Gunnar Rodie for 15 years, until I hung up my numbers.
Really enjoyed this one! Love seeing personality develop in a bike after years of tweaking and many miles of use and enjoyment
Great looking bike man! I love how you geek out on every little nuance.
It's a magnificent build, you don't see bikes like that in the wild often in 2023. 👌
