Love the Bob Jackson. I had mine built for me in 1998 because they were my local builders.8 countries and many thousands of miles, it’s sublime. The frames are all silver soldered, not brazed, and without a jig, because they don’t want to build stresses in by forcing it to stay in the jig. It’s just soldered up perfectly by hand so the tubes are relaxed. They are more special than most people realise, and the Heychins framrs of that era were all built by the same guys in the same way. It’s basically a non-curly Hetchins.
What a fantastic video! I've seen several of these before in other videos, but it was awesome to hear the stories behind each, and the long looks at all the details of each one. This is fascinating. These bikes are as much art as they are machines. Great job!
Bob Jackson were just up the road from me. Woodrups were another good frame builder nearby. Jackson were higher quality tho, won a LOT of races back in the day, competed in all the grand tours, world champs, Olympics, the lot. The shop was more like a garage than a showroom, they had this weird contraption they used for sizing you up for frames in the middle of the place & little product on display. Customer service was basic, they'd listen a few seconds, then tell you what you needed with zero BS or sales tactics. Just "this is the cheap option, this is the expensive one, take your pick & get out cos we got bikes to build" lol.
Yup, same treatment for me. Unfortunately they decided a too-narrow crown was what I needed, and i had to fit t BJ tandem fork years later when I had the nerve to want 35mm for off road touring in Eastern Europe!
Had a Woodrup Adventure frame custom made by the shop just under three years ago. Rides like a dream with 853 tubing and without doubt the best bike for me. Bob Jackson custom frames have been revived by Tom who can be contacted via Woodrups shop in Leeds. 👍
This is absolutely one of my favourite videos so far from you. (And that says a lot). Loved every minute of it and watched it all. Very cool collection of bikes. Cheers from Thunder bay Ontario
#10: 1978 I graduated HS and rediscovered my love of bicycles. Our LBS was a Raleigh dealer. Hal, the proprietor, gave me a catalog to look over before I chose. I wanted that Super Course because it had the 531 main tubes and alloy wheels but it was a little out of reach. I opted for the Super Grand Prix, a step below. It had straight gauge tubing, 700c alloy wheels with presta valves, which I thought were really neat. But the coolest feature was the Suntour barcon shifters. Raleighs of that era are so cool. I still would love to have a Raleigh International of that vintage. Added: I rode Merlin mountain bikes (1990, 1993, 1997) from 1990 to 2013 (in 2013 I got my custom Coconino). Loved my Merlins. I gave my last Merlin (1997) to a friend. It still lives a happy life on the Navajo Nation. BTW, you have a cool corral of bicycles.
My very first "new" bike was a Raleigh similar to yours except from around 1974ish. My Dad boight 2, one for my sister. Mine was stolen about 6 months later and I replaced it with a Gran Course (1 up) and put Phil Wood hubs on it. It broke at the drive side chainstay an the early 1980's. The upper end Carlton Raleighs woukd use 531C tubing and those were very light, under 20 lbs but we called them "one season" frames because they were relatively fragile. Interesting side note: The S.C. was Tom Ritchey's first bike. Same time period as mine but I'm several years younger, ; ) All great bikes!!!! Thanks!
Isn’t it crazy how the bikes that are the cheapest and most hastily tossed together always just seem to ride amazing? Kinda like your Bob Jackson. I have a GT that I rescued years ago that was in rough shape that I paid $50 for. I revived it using just random parts that I had laying around with the idea of creating a cheap street beater that I could ride around he city but if it got stolen I wouldn’t be super upset, but little did I know that I was creating my most Favorite and most Fun bike to ride ever! It feels like a big bmx bike that just Rolls for days. I absolutely Love it. It does Everything So Good and I would be devastated if anything happened to it. The welds are beginning to crack where the seat stays meet to post, but I keep my eye on it. You’ve got some Beautiful bikes. That blue Waterford is Gorgeous. I love those fenders.
When I worked at a shop and did all the racing stuff I had usually at least 12 different bikes in the garage. Anything from the fancy light weight road racer to a single speed rigid mtb. After I left the shop world I sold them all, and years later (about the time Covid hit) I built the bike I always wanted, a Surly Karate Monkey with all the fancy parts I could never afford back in the day. I know there are fancier frames, but it’s what I wanted and it’s bombproof. Love this bike.
10 sounds about right. My oldest is a 1974 Raleigh SuperCourse. But I bought mine new. It was a road bike/gravel bike I rode everywhere back when gravel was just a road they hadn’t paved yet and not a cool kids thing.
I love this video sooooo much! Huge BikeFarmer fan. Great wind down video after building up my fifth bike all day (halfway to 10!) My "bike to rule them all" is my Atlantis set up for anything that comes along. Rolled it up to Friendsgiving with my cast iron pot full of mussels and two saddlebags full of oil, wine, produce, beer earlier this week. Anyway, all this to say, you've got the best channel in the land!
Cannot agree more with your ultimate choice of which bike you'd keep if you could only have one. Every bike was gorgeous, but that one truly is...the All Rounder. And I love a good breakdown! I appreciate you sharing all the details. Not only was it fun, with the history etc., it was useful information. So thanks!
oh mon, that RALIEGH! back in the late 70s, a friend gave me his early 70s Raleigh Pro Mk IV frame because it was too tall for him, and a perfect fit for me, so I moved all my Campi stuff off my 1975 Motobecane Grand Record, and it was the most awesome bike I ever owned. 2x5 speeds, campi sidepull brakes, campi superrecord crankset and derailleurs, with downtube friction shifters, Cinelli bars... I had a 54-42 front, and I used various rear freewheels, generally a 13-15-17-20-24. God, I loved that bike, then I was chasing a girl I wanted to date after work, and she braked abruptly and I tail ended her car and bent the forks and frame :( I think we had 1 or 2 dates after that and she decided I was too nerdy. It was a mink gold with silver-grey trim, not that different than yours
I love your bikes. I am down to 4 bikes. 1 1958 Raleigh grand lenton(with the suicide shifter ) and its gold , 2 A surly LHT with fat tires and nitto bars, crane bell , 3 tern node 24in folder with a swytch ebike kit 4. Ohm discover e assist bike from Canada. (After the heart attack and back surgery the ebike is ridden most ). I love your green Rivendell! All my bikes have brooks saddles. The 1958 is original. I bought it from a guy that had a museum of a bike shop in bisbee Arizona. It a work of art. All stickers still in tact an Arizona bike from England.
The last time I owned a road bike was 1991/92 when I was in college. I ran it into a telephone poll talking to a cheerleader at UW-Stevens Point. All I've owned ever since were mountain bikes. I am down to three right now. A Surly Fatbike with studded tires for winter time, a Gary Fisher Tassajara I turned into a single speed, and a Gary Fisher HKEK with a rigid fork
Oh was cool seeing you had a Freestyle/ BMX bike in your top 10! Wow! Brought back many old memories in the 70's being a helper at Hillsons Bicycle Shop in Tewksbury Mass trying to work for my 1st new bike. I cannot even remember what brand it was but was that popular Forest green color that seemed like every bike company had. All these years later reliving my 29th or so childhood yet again and bought and fixed up a used BMX again. Who says you can't relive your youth! LOL Well Not for tricks but I can still ride one at almost 67!!! Thank You! This old fart enjoys your RUclips show!
A lot of greats in here. Re: the Bob Jackson being your fastest bike: my fastest is a Racine-built chrome 1973 Schwinn Paramount P13 with almost everything bone stock. I've tried replicating the geo/positioning but I can't seem to get it quite right.
Wow I have been waiting for a video like this from you I love seeing other mechanics own stories of why and how they come to live there bikes and the cool parts they put on!!
Beautiful collection. Ten is an appropriate amount of bikes . I really enjoy and appreciate bikes of the like of what u have. I've started my own collection of "older" bikes myself, 91? Diamondback ascent and 87 mongoose alta . Super fun bikes and simple.
What a great Sunday afternoon watch. Loved this video and following along with the bike nerdiness. Entertaining from beginning to end, thanks for sharing.
Thank you thank you thank you for this video. Just fun to see you enjoy the fruits of your labor. I wish more people thought this way. The bikes are great and that says something really cool about their owner.
Thanks! Really enjoyed this one. I have a orange Rambo just like yours....I only ride it on sunny days. I appreciate your passion for bikes, especially the old stuff. Being 65, its nice to see bikes and equipment when they had soul. Ten is not too many....I have 17 and always looking for the N +1 bike.
Yeeaahhh, the Waterford absolutely! I just got my first "fancybike," (not counting my ebike which is kinda fancy I guess), and it is pretty much the same style down to the hammered fenders and the Herse tires (with Herse TPU tubes). Custom built for me! Which is nice b/c I'm 6'4" / 193cm in bare feet, and it's bloody hard to find frames that fit. You're lucky you're normal-sized lol. I freakin' love it.
Well done, Andy! You have a marvelous collection of beautiful bikes! 😁👍 My current fleet has 3 very different road/gravel bikes and a ‘73 Raleigh Sports 3 speed town bike, with an outrageously comfortable Brooks B73 saddle - 3 springs, no waiting! Roadies include: ‘98 Basso Gap with Dura Ace 7700 cranks, brakes, front derailleur, and shifters plus XTR M952 rear derailleur and 11-34 cassette. WTB SST 98 saddle, Mavic Cosmic Elite wheelset, bike weighs 21lbs 14oz with Schwalbe Pro One 700x23c tires ‘11 Cannondale Synapse with Shimano 105 (5603) 3x10 cranks, brakes, front derailleur, and shifters plus XTR M971 derailleur and 11-36 XT cassette. Brooks B17 saddle, Mavic Aksium Race wheelset, weighs 20lbs 15oz with Schwalbe Pro One 700x28c tires ‘12 Motobecane Strada LTD “gravel” bike. It’s the bike I ride the most, for a lot of reasons: it’s a chrome-plated bit of eye candy, I bought it for $100, it’s fast and extremely comfortable. 3X9 Ultegra 6503 shift/brake levers, Claris triple cranks and derailleurs, XTR 11-34 cassette. Originally 3x8 Claris, upgraded to 3x9, will soon be 3x10 Ultegra 6603 front end married to XT 11-36 cassette and super long cage Deore rear derailleur with Ultegra sealed bearing guide pulleys. WTB Laser V saddle, HED Ardennes+ wheelset, weighs 26lbs 4oz with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. Building two more bikes to add to the fleet soon: a ‘73 Raleigh-Carlton Grand Sport, and an early 2000’s Santana single seat prototype made of scandium alloy. Thanks for another great video, Andy! You’re an inspiration to all of us.😎❤️
Love all of the 10 Bikes you have Andy, you definitely are a "Very Fancy Boy"Great RUclips videos and Thanks for the memories of when i was travelling through Wisconsin many times as a semi driver during my 20+ years in the US before moving back here to the UK.
Great collection of machines! I have a hard time getting rid of a bike that I love and still works, I’m a former mechanic, so the older I get the more I have. Recently got 11 of my bikes hung in the same space and was like 😮 that’s cool!
I have at least 35 bikes I own. Everyone I own I ride all them. One bmx in the collection. But I do actually ride all mine. I have my eye open to open a bike shop even though sells can be low I still want to do it.
Great video for us bike nuts. My collection is packed with road bikes, but I love the Merlin and .. well .. all of them. I do have a 1991 Stumpjumper .. my Dad's old bike and love it. Thanks much!
gotta be one of your best yet - revealing from a purely cyclist pov. also a window to where the industry in America could go (or at least add-to) in these dark days of bikes exotic only in tech & price. being a couple short of 10, maybe I'll find something this winter to stare-at & contemplate a new old / new future ride. thx for the inspiration.
This was your best video so far. I know that I'm just gonna throw it on a couple times a year to listen to you nerd out about these lovely machines. If I ever get out your way to join a Driftless brevet I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Waterford.
I have a Black Mountain v2 Road Bike with 2x11 Ultegra. It is such a great bike and pretty much embodies the Socratic version of what a bike should be. Those Honjo's are beautiful with the light stand-offs on the rear fender.
Great to see ypur fleet described in detail. I find it interesting they are all sorta similar in usage, road and trekking biased. My own fleet has massive variation in style and usage. Commuter flat bar roadie, fixed gear, 1x hardtail MTB for pub runs, trail dually, vintage MTBs. Always had a preference for MTB riding, just find it fun. Maybe a gravel bike is missing from the list. Road biased bikes are for business - getting there faster.
Cool bikes and cool video by a cool guy! It's not likely that I will get into super fine rides like these because I am too cheap. However I can draw a lot of inspiration from this collection and apply ideas to the mass produced quality rigs that come my way.
TY BF, great video. One of your best. It was cool to see that many of your bikes have a story behind them. A real passion, and so much like the rest of us out here.
These bikes are similar to the ones at the bike museum in New Bremen Ohio in your travels Andy you should go sometime I know you would enjoy it. Lots of bikes made by Schwinn Huffy Cannondale Harley Davidson. And bikes made in Europe 1700’s 1800’s bikes made from Dayton Ohio when Dayton was a power house of bike building. One from Wilbour and Orville Wright.
Just found out your channel! Congrats for the amazing work, the first minutes in and I already knew I found a place to return regularly. Big hub from Brazil!
Hi Andy, Been trying to put together a bike show, like a car show, at a local park around Dane Co. I've built a bunch of unique bikes over the years that need to be seen. I've been watching your videos for a while now and just realized you are near me. Nice collection.
Sad that Waterford is no more. I feel fortunate to have a Boulder Bicycle “all road” that was built by Waterford. It has the skinny light tubing and has a fantastic ride quality. With full Honjo fenders, a nitto front rack, Son front & White industries T11 hubs with Edelux front and Compass tail lights it weighs 25lb and it feels like 20 🏁.
I understand your fondness for big tires. I have fairly inexpensive Conti RIDE City tires on a '93 Trek 950 lugged MTB drop-bar commuter. They are only 60psi but, as heavy as the bike is, it just rolls so well.
Super nice collection! I could have been a contender. I like bicycles and would imagine if I had focused as well as you have, maybe could have gotten a great collection like yours. Appreciate the share. 🚲 ❤️
N+1= A sweet bike collection! Love your number one bike, and the All Rounder. I've got two Mike Varley designed bikes, Monster Cross and La Cabra, and one Chumba Stella Ti. Thanks for the video, time for a coffee ride at 35deg in CO.☮
One of my fav. vids you've done. Really cool to see someone elses bikes. Coming from a seemingly, most cool "CYCLIST" of the cooler sort & having been so for a long while !!! When I hear U & others of like, ilk say " I really like how this bike rides " it simply brings about a desire to sit & have 3 or more beers with U !! Just so I can have the opportunity to pick your brain very thoroughly ! Also, it was never my intention to offend. However like bike weight, I never give much thought to what others think, about what I say. However it is never my intention to not be respectful.
Loved the list. I just realized it’s ironic, my Bilenky that is 100 percent inspired by you and a copy cat to the custom Waterford. It’s a very similar blue I’m loving it but UPS did best the crap out of her shipping it to me so it has to go back to Stephen for a lot of paint work. I love the Rene Herse, and velocity quill wheels B17 like I said let you do all the hard work. I need to weigh her. Your right just do it luckily enough I got it as a demo so she want custom made for me but its a filet brazed queen I only have 4 bike 5 of you count my wife’s trail bike she never rides❤❤❤
also worked with johanna on my Gunnar Hyper XF. ashame waterford closed. I was going to send my RS-11 in for a repaint. beautiful bicycles my dude. If I ever get out to Wisconsin I'll have to stop by the shop
An impressive fleet. I have a silver Mercian that looks quite a bit like your Waterford, but without the rust. I’ve owned several Bridgestones, but have yet to trip the trigger on a Rivendell.
Regarding 531 tubing: ya know, as far as ride quality, I don't think there has ever been anything better. I mosly look for 853 Steel bikes now but imho, nothing beats 531 for steel bikes. A well built one will have the perfect balance for comfort and speed.
I love this video! most of my favorites tend to be made by lynskey, even if they say things like salsa and litespeed on the tubes. you can never have too many!
I thought you were joking about the happy sock. Then you rolled out that last Waterford and I was harder than a rock. Currently laying in bed smokin a cig
Awesome collection. I am kicking myself for passing up a couple Waterford's in my size. One was even a travel bike, which is something I have only seen one of.
Guess I should've watched to the end before commenting. Another Waterford for #1! Geez I think my R-33 also uses the True Temper S-3 tubing. It is by far my lightest steel bike, but it came with a carbon fork.
Those Spur bells really do sound great. KNOG has one model that sounds even more beautiful, the Deluxe model in brass. It's heavier, and probably more fragile, but it sounds like it belongs in a symphony orchestra. Their other models sound ok, but this one is special.
Cool collection. Can’t decide my favourite cause comforts a priority and I can’t ride them but I’m partial to the Appel and you’re homemade adventure bike, after your Waterford custom. I’m partial to the RH tires too. They were kind of a revelation.

If that GT is steel, you should take it to a framebuilder to have the cracks filled in with brazing to halt stop them from worsening.

Love the Riv’s but that Waterford is definitely the crown jewel, what a beautiful bike.
LOL
Well Not for tricks but I can still ride one at almost 67!!!

Really enjoyed this video. And your channel is great. Ice to sit back and leanr a few things by just watching and enjoying the pace. Thanks.
Thanks hey!
My current fleet has 3 very different road/gravel bikes and a ‘73 Raleigh Sports 3 speed town bike, with an outrageously comfortable Brooks B73 saddle - 3 springs, no waiting! Roadies include:
‘98 Basso Gap with Dura Ace 7700 cranks, brakes, front derailleur, and shifters plus XTR M952 rear derailleur and 11-34 cassette. WTB SST 98 saddle, Mavic Cosmic Elite wheelset, bike weighs 21lbs 14oz with Schwalbe Pro One 700x23c tires
‘11 Cannondale Synapse with Shimano 105 (5603) 3x10 cranks, brakes, front derailleur, and shifters plus XTR M971 derailleur and 11-36 XT cassette. Brooks B17 saddle, Mavic Aksium Race wheelset, weighs 20lbs 15oz with Schwalbe Pro One 700x28c tires
‘12 Motobecane Strada LTD “gravel” bike.
You’re an inspiration to all of us.😎❤️
Usually I think the brand is overhyped but the way that Rivendell All Rounder looks/is set up is 👌 - deserving of all the praise you heaped on it.
What a exquisite collection. I learned a lot watching. Cool stuff Q-Man!👍🏾
Cool bikes and cool video by a cool guy!
Great video and I enjoyed the thought and detail that went into the process.
Oh my goodness!! Wonderful collection. I have bike built by Waterford (Heron Road) and I agree with you there is something about how they ride
This was awesome! Thank you so much
These bikes are similar to the ones at the bike museum in New Bremen Ohio in your travels Andy you should go sometime I know you would enjoy it. Lots of bikes made by Schwinn Huffy Cannondale Harley Davidson. And bikes made in Europe 1700’s 1800’s bikes made from Dayton Ohio when Dayton was a power house of bike building. One from Wilbour and Orville Wright.
Rambouillet is a famous breed of sheep that produce wool that makes a great yarn
I enjoyed the collection. I am considering making a video with my bikes. Thanks for sharing.
Yesss. One of your best videos!
Thank you!!
I understand your fondness for big tires. I have fairly inexpensive Conti RIDE City tires on a '93 Trek 950 lugged MTB drop-bar commuter. They are only 60psi but, as heavy as the bike is, it just rolls so well.
Thanks hey!!
Thanks for this, I can now feel noble with only 6 🚲 ( some mostly complete!)
The blue on that Waterford is gorgeous.
That was so much fun to watch. Thank you
also worked with johanna on my Gunnar Hyper XF. ashame waterford closed. I was going to send my RS-11 in for a repaint. beautiful bicycles my dude. If I ever get out to Wisconsin I'll have to stop by the shop
What a great stable! I've landed on six bikes, and that seems to give me a bike for any mood that strikes me.
What an awesome top 10! I’m still working on my ‘05 Bianchi Volpe and picking out parts for an old Nishiki mixte. Thanks for the inspiration! 🍻
Great bikes! And beautiful parts like Rene Herse tyres and Honjo fenders .... only the best! 👍👍👍
Love your stable. I have 2 Waterford built Nikes, a Rivendell A. Homer Hilson and a Schwinn Paramount. Wonderful bikes. Great video
I love the custom steel. No carbon. Very, very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Not to mention those gorgeous crank bolts on the Rambo too. Peak fancy boi
An impressive fleet. I have a silver Mercian that looks quite a bit like your Waterford, but without the rust. I’ve owned several Bridgestones, but have yet to trip the trigger on a Rivendell.
Thanks hey!!
@ You’re welcome. Not sure how many tacos that’ll buy, maybe one?
@ I am now +1 taco
Regarding 531 tubing: ya know, as far as ride quality, I don't think there has ever been anything better. I mosly look for 853 Steel bikes now but imho, nothing beats 531 for steel bikes. A well built one will have the perfect balance for comfort and speed.
My Raleigh is 531c. Despite being almost 5 pounds heavier than my carbon bike it still feels fast and rides very nice.
Dude great watch… your knowledge and passion is noted here.
I feel like you would also like the 70’s or early 80’s takara road bikes. I picked up a 79 a while back and the craftsmanship for the age is beautiful
Wing nuts! A must have in the mid 70s!
I love this video! most of my favorites tend to be made by lynskey, even if they say things like salsa and litespeed on the tubes. you can never have too many!
Nice collection!
Thanks hey!
I thought you were joking about the happy sock. Then you rolled out that last Waterford and I was harder than a rock. Currently laying in bed smokin a cig
Atta kid
I live just up the road from Worksop England where your Raleigh Super Course was built. Love watching your videos, keep up the great work 👍🏻
Andy, you have good stuff. Congrats! Bikes forever!
Been waiting for a video like this from you! 🎉
Awesome collection. I am kicking myself for passing up a couple Waterford's in my size. One was even a travel bike, which is something I have only seen one of.
The pedals on the All Rounder. Called Grip Kings were designed by Grant P and built by MKS. I have the Lambda version on my Bike Friday.
More like Slip Kings!
LOVE your #9 bike, the Waterford. I own an R-33 and love it. Both the ride and handling are sublime. I think your bars are called mustache bars.
Damn I only have nine; time to look for one more! 😂
Cool collection. Can’t decide my favourite cause comforts a priority and I can’t ride them but I’m partial to the Appel and you’re homemade adventure bike, after your Waterford custom. I’m partial to the RH tires too. They were kind of a revelation.
12:16 Truly gorgeous bike!
Thanks Bikefarmer. I Had to stop this video just so that I could go look for more bikes to buy on marketplace.
Lovely bikes and good explanations - I'm also impressed you made a bike sale - well done all around
