"Stop messing around" that part really hit me after he was shot by Matsuda, dude always liked to mess around and joke around with light. But stuff just got real serious, really quickly. Best ending I ever seen, never did I imagine Light would die in such a pathetic way, he deserved it though whole time through the show I wanted him to die.

I'm not sure to explain why, but I think it's more fitting that out of anybody who could've done it, Matsuda was the one that killed Light in a fit of rage. Maybe it's because Matsuda was always kinda underestimated and never taken seriously so light would never expect Matsuda of all people to attack him.
In the manga Light dies a way more humiliating death. Instead of running away and dying peacefully, in the manga he just lays there from the shots by Matsuda calling out names of people he knows such as Misa and Takada and all others, but he just gets reminded by people talking in that room that either they are away or that he killed them. Then Ryuk finally writes his name and he dies.
I don't think he died peacefully, he was in despair the whole time. He cries out for help, but nobody answers. I think it's poetic that we don't see him have a heart attack, as there probably wasn't much of a heart left. The last shot we get of him as pitifully dead on a staircase in some industrial area.

It make sense for it to be Matsuda. Not because he was close to light and disillusioned. Nor as something poetic about the bullied, foolish, underestimated character being the the one to catch the villain. But because Matsuda is the only person in the series who was actually a good person. The only one who didn't hurt the innocent. And who actually cared about the victims of the world. Light and L played the good guy. Matsuda lived it.

honestly, I think Matsuda was the one whose worldview was the closest to Light/Kira. he’s the only member of the task force who ever sympathized with Kira’s reasoning, and he said it more than once even when he got backlash from his peers. in a way, he’s similar to Light. that’s why he’s also capable of murder when he feels it’s for a good cause. when he feels angry and disgusted that someone can be so morally reprehensible, to the point that they shouldn’t be allowed to live. he says “we have to kill him.” not that they need to lock him up. not that they need to put him on trial. like Kira, he sees no remorse and decides the criminal’s fate himself. Matsuda’s a good person. they’re different in lots of ways but in this scene he’s an interesting parallel to Light. you can even see it in the way his eyes change before he shoots the second time. it makes sense for it to be Matsuda.
I know many people hate on how DN ended but to me the ending was perfect, When light was working with L he was still a student and though he was a proud person his pride didn't get in the way of his decision making but after L died light started to believe that he has defeated everyone and has become the god of the new world . Slowly his ego inflates and makes major screw ups which ultimately lead to his downfall. Another thing that deathnote's ending illustrates very well is the power of teamwork and collaboration. Dure the L era , L alone worked to find out who Kira was , sure he did have the task force assisting him but considering the fact that the task force is literally just L , kira , kira's dad and some childishly dumb dude we can conclude that they didn't contribute much to investigating who Kira was . But in the near end ( pun intended ) both near and mello work together to stop Kira , mello was at first unwilling to cooperate with near but eventually he shared crucial info regarding the Death note to near which helped him outsmart kira. This shows that greater things can be achieved via teamwork . But the thing I like the most about the ending was Matsuda. The sudden change of personality was truly a thrilling sight to behold. None of us were expecting matsuda to be the one to punish Kira for his diabolic sins and make him bleed and suffer. Art is subjective and is based purely on opinions and in my opinion Death Note's ending was simply perfect.

Funny thing is the fans subs I saw before were more accurate I think. If I remember right "yaro" is a vulger term in Japanese equivalent to "asshole" or "shithead". "Baka yaro" basically means "stupid asshole" In the fan sub that part was never translated with the expletive but instead of "stop messing around" it was "don't fuck with me". Seems fitting since Light thinks very highly of himself. Edit: Actually scratch that. I think it was the DVD sub.

When Matsuda shoots at Light multiple times when he writes with his blood you can hear his pain groans signifying he’s frustrated and his having a mental breakdown.
The acting is so incredible here. The way Light's voice starts cracking and he loses the whole pretense he;s been keeping up for the whole series. Amazing.

It's ridiculous to be defeated like this when you've been victorious against L . He’s not only trying to change the government into a monarchy, but also the minds of the people so his influence will be engrained and last even when gone. Having people pervert your message will weaken the effectiveness of what you’re trying to do: influence the mindset of society. In Light’s POV Naomi, L, Near, Kira’s Kingdom, etc. are obstacles of the “rotten world” preventing him from doing good. In that sense, he was justified in trying to kill them, whether or not he indulged in bloodlust when doing so. The only death that Light had absolutely no justified reason for doing was Lind L. Tailor as that was not only a tactical failure, but a blatant show of pride. That wasn’t the only time vanity led him to kill but it was the only time (other than trying to kill Near) that there weren’t other reasons to warrant it.

Ryuk is basically us, starting the series because we are bored, watching everything happen as a neutral 3rd party. Even in the end he said "it has been interesting, sayonara" something like that haha.
Having Matsuda be the one to end it all was so perfect. The WHOLE story he's the simpleton, the everyman, the only one who really feels like a real person stuck in that messed up world and at the end it isn't the machinations of evil twisted men that win, it's the utter instinctual, irresistible urge of a decent man to destroy what is sick in the world that reminds us that all of that evil was and is eternally powerless the moment it is exposed to the eyes of good people.

Light is an evil person but, he murdered murderers and other evil people like rapists for the greater good and decreased crime. He was a bad person because he killed innocent people but he only killed them so he could be safe and continue making the world a better place.
As satisfying as Light was crushed in every way in this last episode, both mentally and physically, and how Matsuda furiously shot Light in the arm 2:03, it was just right for Kira. It still lacks Rage of Sparta God of War 3 style or should I say Rage of Matsuda

Light got too desperate using the hidden note in front of everyone. He could have faked some sort of mental breakdwon similar to what he did after being shot. He could then run outside faster without being wounded and use the hidden note undetected.

I for the life of me cannot understand why people don't like the 2nd half of Death Note. This is probably one of my favorite endings to an anime.

In Light’s POV Naomi, L, Near, Kira’s Kingdom, etc. are obstacles of the “rotten world” preventing him from doing good. In that sense, he was justified in trying to kill them, whether or not he indulged in bloodlust when doing so. The only death that Light had absolutely no justified reason for doing was Lind L. Tailor as that was not only a tactical failure, but a blatant show of pride. That wasn’t the only time vanity led him to kill but it was the only time (other than trying to kill Near) that there weren’t other reasons to warrant it.

Even in the end he said "it has been interesting, sayonara" something like that haha.
Having Matsuda be the one to end it all was so perfect. The WHOLE story he's the simpleton, the everyman, the only one who really feels like a real person stuck in that messed up world and at the end it isn't the machinations of evil twisted men that win, it's the utter instinctual, irresistible urge of a decent man to destroy what is sick in the world that reminds us that all of that evil was and is eternally powerless the moment it is exposed to the eyes of good people.
This truly traumatized me after I watched it when I was 10.

Matsuda always agreed with Kira’s message he just didn’t agree with his overall demeanor.
I sort of relate to Matsuda in this sense. I couldn't ever support Kira, but I wouldn't be able to hate everything he did.

In the end, he just wanted to write down the name of near and any other name as a sort of revenge and for satisfaction that he killed near
