U live in upstate NY near Canada. I love your stories. It's like listening to my grandpa telling me stories about Brooklyn NY when he was a kid. He was born in 1898.
While many people don't understand life in the Appalachian Mountains and often make fun of us, it brings a smile to my face to hear you tell stories and it brings back memories of my grandparents and great grandparents. Thank you for taking time to do so.
Watching from Buncombe County NC which borders Haywood County. My grandpaw was born in Madison County NC in 1902. Loved his stories about seeing the first automobile getting electricity. It was around 1970 or 72 when he got a phone. Love your videos keep em coming. Would love to have that book
This is a very interesting video about an area I'm not familiar with and I'm watching it from a town called Green Valley Arizona which is south of Tucson Arizona and about 30 Mi north of Nogales Mexico I plan to relocate to Eastern Tennessee to be with my girlfriend who is from Sullivan County Tennessee many thanks for the great videos

My daddy is 94 years old. Shares his birthday with Veterans Day. I love your stories and play your videos for him. Our roots are in the Cherokee National Forest area which makes this sort of history like a family memory for us. Thank you so much.
JD I loved this as did my wife and her relatives for a very good reason. My wife is the great-great-great granddaughter of Fed Messer. He had a son named Jeff Messer , who had a daughter named Martha.Martha Married John Justice from Madison County NC, specifically the Spring Creek Section of Madison County. Martha had several children and my supposes mother was Mae Justice who married Roy Suttles. They had four daughters my wife Mary Sue Suttles. She and I married and she is now a Pressley. I am from Haywood County and am very familiar with the Dutch Cove Section of the county.. I immediately called her in when I saw this documentary posted. She was moved to tears and joy flooded her to hear your story being shared. Uncle Fed was truly 115 when he finally passed away. He swam across the Pigeon River at 105 years young. Many people couldn't accomplish that at 15 years of age. Longevity of life has followed this clan even till now. 90 plus years of age is very common in this family. Only one of Martha's children remains today and that is Reva who lives in Seymour TN area. She is 94 years young and still active and very keen of the mind. Thank you for sharing hopefully I have provided some further insight into this ongoing story of Fed's clan. Mary Sue and I live in Bassett VA and have been married 38 years as of July 17th, 2024. Hello on a quiet morning in Phoenix, Arizona, Arizona gonna be about 118° today. This summer is here. I keep positive as I just know every day is one more day closer to cooler weather and 6 to 7 months gorgeous winter weather or everyone is outside every day you can imagine from hiking, biking and flying higher balloon, lakes water skiing anything you can imagine
Thank you JD .one of your best story ever it brought a tear to my eye. My grand father to supply's to an old hermit in the area once a month fir years .When my grand father passed I took of the task. I was young strait out of high school and now whish I had documented all old John Renolds knew. He lived in the woods with no running water or power. He had driven a model aa ford up into the 70s. I still have that old truck and a maytag twin cilinder engine he gave me . Looking back sure miss the old fellow. One of the most memorable things was his house cat Peat that had shown up at his door as a kitten . When I met peat fir the first time he's was peeking around the corner of the large depot stove in the middle of the room . The stove provided the only light and made peats eys glow. John said I must be all right cuz peat didn't take to strangers. When peat stepped out i saw that peat came up to my knee and must have weiged fifty pounds . I asked what kind of cat he was John sad (he is one of those manx cats see he ain't got no tail) I about fell out of my chair😅. Old peat was the bigest bob cat I had ever saw. I'm in Melbourne Australia but I'm proud to say that most of my childhood was in Lewis county Kentucky, my dad born in breathitt county Kentucky, his dad from Harlan county Kentucky. Some really good people and beautiful land throughout Appalachian mountains. I'm glad to have come across your channel.
I came here on a job, loved the nature and climate and it just became a happy transition. It's rated in the top 10 cities most years. And it's like KY NC TN Appalachian mountains, with the ability to get away and be immersed into the great outdoors. The Victorian Alps are a short drive north of me.

I’m watching from Cartersville, Georgia! I share your stories to Aunts in their 70’s and 80’s. They adore them. They are in Middle Tennessee near the Cumberland Mountains. I’m 68 and I can remember the area being farm land and beautiful. Not anymore it’s a city now! Thanks from the bottom of my heart helping us all remember simpler times and getting us away from the hustle and bustle even if only for 15 minutes. It causes us to reflect and remember things.

And they are literally your people. Most in the area were Scotts sent to Ireland for a time, double-crossed by the Brits (go figure), then left for America and ended up in the Appalachians

It’s a huge adjustment as I used to be a Flight Attendant, but now that I’ve seen the world, I’ve found that the smaller my world is, the more content I am. My grandpa was born in 1923 in hazard county ky. He grew up in a similar way. Taught my dad and then they taught me. I’ve spent my adult life exploring half the wilderness this country has to offer. kinda hope that grandpa can see and enjoy the places i go through my eyes.

Born and raised in West Virginia. Currently I live in Northern Florida, but WV will always be my home. I’m trying to get a transfer back, unfortunately there’s not a lot of jobs there. The opiate epidemic really took its toll of all of Appalachia. Lost some goods friends too. People who haven’t been to the Appalachia mountains just don’t get it, it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth. And filled with some amazing people as well. I just don’t feel grounded anywhere else. Thank you for your channel and stories, they always put a smile on my face.

Anyway, I certainly agree with Fed that a life out in nature as much as possible is the best prescription for a long and healthy life. No telling how many people are walking around today partly bc I'd rather take a shovel to the garden than take a shovel to them. I was digging one day and somebody asked why. I said I had to do something about my mil and burying her seemed best. Would you believe that person reported me to the police? 😂 Apparently nobody else was half as amused as I'd been. Hi JD! Can you imagine what Uncle Fed saw in his lifetime, amazing. I know that on my mother’s side five generations were alive and going strong. The local news paper did a story and took pictures of them with my great grandmother and grandmother being the first and second generations in that photo. I remember them telling stories about what they had seen in their lives. I still remember the first hamburger I ever had. Thanks for this heartwarming story. Have a very blessed weekend!

I'm in Melbourne Australia but I'm proud to say that most of my childhood was in Lewis county Kentucky, my dad born in breathitt county Kentucky, his dad from Harlan county Kentucky.
Some really good people and beautiful land throughout Appalachian mountains.
I'm glad to have come across your channel.
How'd you end up in Australia?
I came here on a job, loved the nature and climate and it just became a happy transition. It's rated in the top 10 cities most years. And it's like KY NC TN Appalachian mountains, with the ability to get away and be immersed into the great outdoors. The Victorian Alps are a short drive north of me.

I’m watching from Cartersville, Georgia! I share your stories to Aunts in their 70’s and 80’s. They adore them. They are in Middle Tennessee near the Cumberland Mountains. I’m 68 and I can remember the area being farm land and beautiful. Not anymore it’s a city now! Thanks from the bottom of my heart helping us all remember simpler times and getting us away from the hustle and bustle even if only for 15 minutes. It causes us to reflect and remember things.

My grandpa was born in 1923 in hazard county ky. He grew up in a similar way. Taught my dad and then they taught me. I’ve spent my adult life exploring half the wilderness this country has to offer. kinda hope that grandpa can see and enjoy the places i go through my eyes.

Born and raised in West Virginia. Currently I live in Northern Florida, but WV will always be my home. I’m trying to get a transfer back, unfortunately there’s not a lot of jobs there. The opiate epidemic really took its toll of all of Appalachia. Lost some goods friends too. People who haven’t been to the Appalachia mountains just don’t get it, it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth. And filled with some amazing people as well. I just don’t feel grounded anywhere else. Thank you for your channel and stories, they always put a smile on my face.

Anyway, I certainly agree with Fed that a life out in nature as much as possible is the best prescription for a long and healthy life. No telling how many people are walking around today partly bc I'd rather take a shovel to the garden than take a shovel to them. I was digging one day and somebody asked why. I said I had to do something about my mil and burying her seemed best. Would you believe that person reported me to the police? 😂 Apparently nobody else was half as amused as I'd been. Great story sharing, thank you. I'm sitting at home on a Saturday night, remembering my childhood in North central Arkansas. These stories always remind me of my mom and dad growing up. Hi JD! Can you imagine what Uncle Fed saw in his lifetime, amazing.
I know that on my mother’s side five generations were alive and going strong. The local news paper did a story and took pictures of them with my great grandmother and grandmother being the first and second generations in that photo.
I remember them telling stories about what they had seen in their lives. I still remember the first hamburger I ever had.

My grandma lived to be 2 days shy of 104. Amazing lady who outlived 4 husbands and 5 of her 6 children. She told stories about her life in lower Alabama and North Florida. The paper did a story on her life and I have a copy. Hello from Bristol in the Florida panhandle.

I just love your stories they are like short history scenes. My Dad just turned 96 and had a cousin at the time of her death was over 100 years old. This story should let people know don't be in a rush and take care of each other. That way we can live longer and be happy.
