This is a pretty great video. In a little over seven minutes you demonstrate basically every technique needed to make a great looking model. The next time someone asks me how to get a gunpla kit to look a certain way I'm showing them this video.
BOOM!!! This was an Amazing video. No Joke. Excellent pacing. Covered lots of information. Excellent sound bytes. Its one of your best videos. Everything was perfected. Expecting more of dis. Yea Booooiiiii!
Great work! Would love to see more quick fire WIP videos like this! Much more informative to watch techniques as opposed to be told or to read about them.
Yeah unfortunately I didn't show that in the video! I thought my camera was recording when I did that but it wasn't! And I couldn't redo it! I just dropped some white enamel, waited for it to drop, then a big drop of flourescent pink enamel over that!
"Why am I still here.....just to suffer? Everynight, I could still feel my clear visor, my old skin.......even my markings. The body I’ve lost… the comrades I’ve lost… won’t stop hurting… It’s like they’re all still there. You feel it, too, don’t you?"
So this was the big 1337... Congrats, and brilliant Zaku head. Unfortunately these aren't very easily accessible in the US, so my hopes and dreams of making one of these customs are a little squished...
what does the pledge do? help protect the paint when you do the panel lining? like keep it from coming off when you clean the panel lines with the lighter fluid?
other than panel lining, some builder top coated their model more than 2 times when they use many effect. before panel lining, before decal and before weather/rust/dirt effect so if someting goes wrong they not losing the paint
If you want to remove pledge or tamiya paint without damaging the plastic just soak it overnight on Windex!!! It removes any acrylic based paint, it also removes the polyurethane primers. I have used that method a couple of times and is super safe. Btw... the head looks awesome!
wow. this is really nice. it is ashamed what happen to the visor. exact same thing happen to my friend brand new water bottle, it was on my recommendation too so that made me felt really bad. :(
Zack, if you sand the clear part and gradualy sand with higher grits all the way to a buffing sponge then dip it in pledge it should turn clear again, i save canopies this way all the time.
hey, zaku just wondering how you thinned the flat coat? and what are the air pressure of your airbrush and how far you spray on the final top coat? because when I use that flat top coat from Mr hobby I keep on getting the webbing.
Awesome work great color combo. As far as the clear plastic piece.. not sure, still on the fence, the reflections that caused helps to fill in the void a bit as an alternative I would have extended just a tad bit the piece that protrudes with the mono eye so its not as sunken in under the whole head dome. But that's just personal preference. The black snout area was a neat touch, definitely gives it a nice simple but effective detail.
I tried panel lining for the first time, using Tamiya accent colour, but when I went to remove the little excess paint spots, the thinner wouldn't get rid of them. Now they're dried on and I want to chuck the whole kit in the bin because it's gone from white to grey, covered in black spots, and the thinner (because I was really trying to scrub the paint off) has messed up the plastic. Any advice for where I went wrong?
The base paint should be acrylic or laquer based so the accent color (enamel in this case) won't damage the paint underneath. If your base paint is enamel you should use a top coat (acrylic or laquer) before aplying the pannel line. You shold use white spirits, enamel thinner or ligher fluid to remove the excess of the accent color (enamel).
Is better to use lighter fluid for cleaning the panel lines? I've been using rubbing alcohol. Also, beautiful work as always! Really makes me want to get one of these heads or maybe the one from the Ramba Ral commando set.
Rubbing alcohol is good at removing most kinds of paint, including your base coat and primer. Lighter fluid will only remove semi-fresh enamels, so that makes it better for cleaning up panel lining. Zach needed the rubbing alcohol for that clear part, since that would've removed the paint without eating the plastic.
Nice video! But I have a few questions: I've bought the V2 Gundam MG, do you have any tips on how to treat nubmarks and how to actually make it weild it's weapon? Also I'm going to apply all of the waterslides (yes,I'm going to finish in 2040). Could you explain how to use Mr. Marker setter? Also, when I need to top coat the kit? Before the decals and panel line or after? Thanks in advance Zak, I hope you see this and help me :3
ZakuAurelius hey this is self advertising ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Jokes aside, I didn't thought about that, now I will give it a look. Thanks Zack! you're so helpful all the times :D
Wouldn't the pledge be able to help with that hazing? That was kind of the point in trying to pledge it in the first place. May be worth giving it a shot.
I skimmed through all the comments and didn't see this. Did you mess with the metalic detail under the opening hatch of the nose? I was just wondering if the metalic part is removable. I'm trying but it isn't moving. Nice video btw
ZakuAurelius What is that yellow tube thing you used for cleaning up panel lines ? Do you think I can get this kit at the new Gundam Base Tokyo? (And btw nice lamp top quality IKEA product :D)
The next year Bandai will sell us the torso, the other year the arms and so on until you have a full Zaku, DAMN YOU BANDAI! this feel like you are paying your credit cards debs
Zach, that clear visor can maybe be saved, if you cared enough to bother. I've seen vids from aircraft modelers about how to remove scratches from airplane canopies, so that same stuff could work for you.
This is a pretty great video. In a little over seven minutes you demonstrate basically every technique needed to make a great looking model. The next time someone asks me how to get a gunpla kit to look a certain way I'm showing them this video.
Thanks man!
Beautiful! So much precious info contained in this short video, even if you don't say much, thanks for sharing your painting process!
This turned out so good. I just got one of these myself for really cheap I think I’m going to try and paint it for my first gunpla paint project
I think there was more value in the video from seeing how he painted the kit than the actual showing of the kit itself. Thanks, Zaku.
Absolutely loved this video! Always great to see the creative process in action
Amazing. I just bought 3x Zaku heads today... can't wait to paint them.
This was great Zack! Would love to see more videos like this where you cover the process from start to finish.
That shade of greenish blue is my absolute favorite color
Loving the icy look of blue and blue green there.
BOOM!!! This was an Amazing video. No Joke. Excellent pacing. Covered lots of information. Excellent sound bytes. Its one of your best videos. Everything was perfected. Expecting more of dis. Yea Booooiiiii!
thanks dude!
Looks awesome and the video format was really cool, I'd love to watch more like this
Great work!
Would love to see more quick fire WIP videos like this! Much more informative to watch techniques as opposed to be told or to read about them.
The damn MGS parts got me
+Abraxis729 there's an MGS reference?
Excellent color choice, and I love the simple striking red mono-eye!
Nice one Zach. Cool paint job.
thanks Laurent!
The red in that eye tho! What kind of paint or color comes out looking like its glowing?
Yeah unfortunately I didn't show that in the video! I thought my camera was recording when I did that but it wasn't! And I couldn't redo it! I just dropped some white enamel, waited for it to drop, then a big drop of flourescent pink enamel over that!
Holy moly this is beautiful, it was so cool to see the process

I really like this kind of vid!!! all WIP in one vid and it's really entertaining and fun to watch! great job zack please do more!! :)))
Awesome! I loved this style of Video!
Amazing! Great video. I'd love to see an entire Zaku in this color scheme! (I need an airbrush!!!)
5:02 omg!!! 화기엄금!!!! :) 한국에 거주하는군요 :)
맞아요! I live in Korea too! 😁
I like this kind of video Zak keep it up!
Those blues are gorgeous
thanks!
So this was the big 1337... Congrats, and brilliant Zaku head. Unfortunately these aren't very easily accessible in the US, so my hopes and dreams of making one of these customs are a little squished...
What are those metal sticks you're using to take paint out of the jars and mix in the airbrush cup called?
Literally that is my favorite color
Lol Char noooo, love the paint job you did an amazing job the mini eye pops out on that cool blue *cough* I would have kept it Char's red though
Sad char :( WoooohooOooooooOooOoo
What is your airbrushes' psi when applying the topcoat/s
Awesome video.
what does the pledge do? help protect the paint when you do the panel lining? like keep it from coming off when you clean the panel lines with the lighter fluid?
yep helps protect paint
And I have a question, did you top coat the kit first before you panel lined it?
djwcalli07 yes he did
other than panel lining, some builder top coated their model more than 2 times when they use many effect.
before panel lining, before decal and before weather/rust/dirt effect so if someting goes wrong they not losing the paint
He explained this topic in one of his video, check it out.
Can you tell if the command fin on these will work on a PG Zaku? Not the one you're using in the vid but the other variant.
Hi Zak and fellow subscribers, would like to ask what did you use to thin the surfacer and in what ratio? Thanks
What airbrush hardware do you use/recommend, if it beginner friendly?
Nice job ZakuAurelius, that looks awesome... You should make that be your channel pic!
If you want to remove pledge or tamiya paint without damaging the plastic just soak it overnight on Windex!!! It removes any acrylic based paint, it also removes the polyurethane primers. I have used that method a couple of times and is super safe. Btw... the head looks awesome!
And if the Windex doesn't work, then rubbing alcohol will. Thirty minutes soaking in that and you can just wipe off any Mr Color stuff.
Just be careful with ABS thow, both alchohols ethilic and isporopyl make ABS plastic cracked and brittle.
How long does does the primer and the rest of the paint take to dry
It's dry to the touch after a few minutes, but takes about a day or two to fully cure.
The mgsv song....I died. Those are some beautiful blues man.
Nicely done.. again mixing inside the cup XD
the lazy man's way!
Omg I totally want one of these now!
wow. this is really nice. it is ashamed what happen to the visor. exact same thing happen to my friend brand new water bottle, it was on my recommendation too so that made me felt really bad. :(
What did he use to remove the excess panel lining?
lighter fluid!
It turned out really good! Zach, what is the product on the yellow bottle to clean the panel lines?
lighter fluid
Zack, if you sand the clear part and gradualy sand with higher grits all the way to a buffing sponge then dip it in pledge it should turn clear again, i save canopies this way all the time.
yep yep! I started that process then just didn't really care! haha
So sick!
Nice! Where did you get the spade decal from tho? :o
you need to do more video like this for a whole gunpla!
Exellent painting
hey, zaku just wondering how you thinned the flat coat? and what are the air pressure of your airbrush and how far you spray on the final top coat? because when I use that flat top coat
from Mr hobby I keep on getting the webbing.
thinned just like normal paint! and pressure the same as well!
i will try it soon, thanks
"Sins of the gunpla modeler"
"Garma, im already a demon" - Venom "punished" Char (UC 70's)
I'd like to see a whole Zaku painted like this now!
Me too, I absolutely love these colors, Zach please do a 2.0 Zaku like this....i'd be beautiful.
Love the orange accent! But I wish the spade was bottom aligned with the II... Nice result!
Thanks! I offset those decals on purpose, I felt that fit the curve shape of the head more.
I see you used HIQ decals.. but what about the rest? Custom?
how do you make the mono eye color to shine like that?
use a fluorescent paint
yep! white, then floro pink over that!
Metal Gear meme level: played like a damn fiddle
I tried panel lining for the first time, using Tamiya accent colour, but when I went to remove the little excess paint spots, the thinner wouldn't get rid of them. He used lighter fluid to clean up the panel lines. Did you topcoat the kit before doing the panel lining also?
I didn't topcoat, no.

Did you use rubbing Alcohol for cleaning up the excess panel lines marks?
Eureka Santos lighter fluid!
Thanks again @ZakuAurelius
Is better to use lighter fluid for cleaning the panel lines? I've been using rubbing alcohol.

Tsorovan Zero Thanks, that's definitely good to know! I haven't done much painting yet so that will be useful knowledge in the future.
I like this type of videos you should do this more!!!
I think I will!
Where do I get one????
internets!
Should do more vids like this. A time lapse of your work
ZakuAurelius! Was curious, what scale decals did you use for this piece?
Maes Hughes Sr 1/100 scale HiQ decals!
Awesome! Thank you very much. Will be working on my own in the coming week!
So fun!
Crying Char was unexpected and hilarious. XD
Hi Zack, where do you live in Korea? I think I saw the same apartments at your background in the credits near Yeungnam University?
Paolo Miguel Lofamia hah, nope not there. There’s a million apartment buildings in Korea that probably look almost
Identical.
Nice video!
But I have a few questions:
I've bought the V2 Gundam MG, do you have any tips on how to treat nubmarks and how to actually make it weild it's weapon? Also I'm going to apply all of the waterslides (yes,I'm going to finish in 2040). Could you explain how to use Mr. Marker setter?

Thanks in advance Zak, I hope you see this and help me :3
I'd recommend just watching my Gunpla Building playlist, all that info is there I think
ZakuAurelius hey this is self advertising ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Jokes aside, I didn't thought about that, now I will give it a look.
Thanks Zack! you're so helpful all the times :D
That is one mighty fine job right there! Kind of like Eric Mansfield's Zaku head, but in blue. Also, that last music, what is that? I need it.
Wouldn't the pledge be able to help with that hazing? That was kind of the point in trying to pledge it in the first place. May be worth giving it a shot.
it wasn't only fogging but the surface was actually deformed from melting. no great loss! I'm still very happy with it!
I skimmed through all the comments and didn't see this. Did you mess with the metalic detail under the opening hatch of the nose? I was just wondering if the metalic part is removable. I'm trying but it isn't moving. Nice video btw
I didn't mess with that cause I wasn't planning on ever opening that up.
That orange accent 🔥🔥
I wish you could make an airbrushing tutorial someday
How much for this one??
haha, probably gonna keep this one! but if I get and paint more I might sell them!
ZakuAurelius What is that yellow tube thing you used for cleaning up panel lines ? Do you think I can get this kit at the new Gundam Base Tokyo? (And btw nice lamp top quality IKEA product :D)
that's lighter fluid! Availability of these can be scarce so while it's possible to find them at GBT, you'll have to get lucky in your timing!
Thanks!!
How did I just notice the Converge banner behind you?
was that from metal gear?
I think it looks better without the clear plastic piece. Cool project.
me too!
The next year Bandai will sell us the torso, the other year the arms and so on until you have a full Zaku, DAMN YOU BANDAI! this feel like you are paying your credit cards debs
Why not drill a hole and add a LED? It is super easy and makes the eye even better
I saw some videos that their zaku head does eye movements. Please do that also. :)
I'm not that skilled, I'm afraid! I don't know how to do that electronic stuff!
Use tamiya paint remover on the visor, then sand it down with sand paper from 600 to 3000 grit. Finish it off with 3 step polishing compunds
I started that process, then stopped caring! haha, it's all good!
ZakuAurelius true, too much work for so little return
Why you don't buy blue oneM
cause i didn't buy one at all, this was a gift!
visor rip
thanks!
More videos like this!
Good content
what is this referencing?
the color scheme itself? nothing! Just picked colors I thought would look good!
wuub wuub wuub eeeeyyooooooohhhaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! wuub wuub wuub
Zach, that clear visor can maybe be saved, if you cared enough to bother. I've seen vids from aircraft modelers about how to remove scratches from airplane canopies, so that same stuff could work for you.
yeah it can be saved probably, but you're right~ I just don't really care enough ;)
That Zaku head kinda looks like the one Vice President eri used in gundam build fighters try
